Ode V

Menaion — translated by Isaac Lambertsen

Rights-risk acceptedServed

¶1

Irmos: The ungodly perceive not Thy glory, O Christ; but, waking at dawn out of the night, we hymn Thee, O Only-begotten One Who lovest mankind, Thou effulgence of the glory of the Father’s divinity.

¶2

Having cleansed their souls through utmost serenity, prayer, fasting and vigilance, the lovers of the wilderness were made receptacles of the light of the threefold Sun.

¶3

Theotokion: Thou art my protection from the temptations of the enemy, O Mistress. Be thou ever the light of my heart which hath been darkened by the griefs of life, and save me, O Theotokos.

¶4

Not as reeds shaken with the wind, but as steadfast pillars founded by faith on Christ, the Cornerstone, Sergius and Herman shone forth with the virtues.

¶5

Emulating the life of John in the wilderness of the Jordan and the quietude of Elijah on the mountain, freed from the yoke of the passions by their spiritual activity, the venerable ones were illumined by the vision of God.
