In those days, it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, he said unto them: “Have ye received the Holy Spirit since ye believed?” And they said unto him: “We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Spirit.” And he said unto them: “Unto what then were ye baptized?” And they said: “Unto John’s baptism.” Then said Paul: “John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on Him Who should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Gospel according to John, §3 [1:29-34]
At that time, John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said: “Behold the Lamb of God, Who taketh away the sin of the world. This is He of whom I said, after me cometh a Man Who is preferred before me: for He was before me. And I knew him not: but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.” And John bore record, saying: “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon Him. And I knew Him not: but He Who sent me to baptize with water, the Same said unto me: ‘Upon Whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, the Same is He Who baptizeth with the Holy Spirit.’ And I saw, and bear record that this is the Son of God.”
