Ode VII

Menaion — translated by Isaac Lambertsen

Rights-risk acceptedServed

¶1

Irmos: O Theotokos, we, the faithful, perceive thee to be a noetic furnace; for, as the supremely Exalted One saved the three youths, in thy womb the praised and most glorious God of our fathers wholly renewed the world.

¶2

The Church of Russia is glorified by your sufferings, O new martyrs, our kinsmen of every rank and estate, who have been slain for Christ by the godless, for the salvation of us who chant: O God our Deliverer, blessed art Thou!

¶3

Theotokion: Rejoice, O pure one, from whom the Shepherd in His compassion issued forth, Who, clothing Himself wholly in me, in the skin of Adam, is truly supremely glorified, the praised and all-glorious God of our fathers.

¶4

Troparia of the Apostle

¶5

Irmos: O ineffable wonder! He, Who in the furnace delivered the venerable children from the flame, is laid in the grave, dead and devoid of breath, for the salvation of us who chant: O God our Deliverer, blessed art Thou!

¶6

Having the Cross as a spear and faith in Christ as a shield, ye accepted sufferings and death, for the salvation of us who chant: O God our Deliverer, blessed art Thou!

¶7

Theotokion: O faithful deliverer of thy people, implore thy Son and God to deliver thy home again from tribulations more cruel than all that have been before, that, saved by thee, with compunction we may say to Him: O God our Deliverer, blessed art Thou!

¶8

Becoming a member of the chorus of the ranks of heaven as is meet, thou rejoicest in gladness, O blessed Timothy, initiate of sacred mysteries, delighting in light-bestowing radiance and proclaiming our praised and all-glorious God.

¶9

Set afire by the minions of Satan whose conscience burned with fire, the holy hierarch John of Riga denounced their malice; likewise did those who were hanged: Tikhon, holy hierarch of Voronezh, the priest Alexis of Simferopol’, and others wickedly slain. And they cry out to Thee, O Lord, in Thy radiant kingdom: O God our Deliverer, blessed art Thou!

¶10

Performing the sacred propagation of the Gospel of Christ from the heights of the virtues, rejoicing, the most godly Paul sent divinely written epistles to thee, his disciple, O Timothy, proclaiming our praised and all-glorious God.

¶11

Like pure birds into the nest of heaven doth the Lord receive the passion-bearing children who were slain, and who sing unceasingly in paradise: O God our Deliverer, blessed art Thou!

¶12

The weakness of the flesh thou didst strengthen with might of soul, O blessed of God; for, having lived on earth like one of the incorporeal hosts, thou becamest a martyr when thy head was crushed, O sacred minister of the mysteries of God.

¶13

Troparia of the Martyr

¶14

The athlete exhorteth the faithful, manifestly showing them his courage for an example, that they might now emulate the voluntary suffering which the praised and all-glorious God of our fathers endured for us.

¶15

The lovers of piety believe in the Trinity Whose Persons are equal in might; for the valiant athletes suffered therefor, shedding their blood, contending as martyrs, and manifestly rendering up their souls as they are slain.
