¶1

At the end of each of the eight Tones in the Paraklitiki there is a short set of doggerel lines describing the characteristics of the Tone in question. For the entertainment of readers I include equally doggerel translations of them at the beginning of each Tone.

¶2

**SECOND MODE**

¶3

Though only second place in rank you hold,

¶4

First pleasure falls to you of honeyed flow.

¶5

Your melody, all honeyed and most sweet,

¶6

Cherishes bones and gives to hearts delight.

¶7

The Sirens surely sang in second Mode,

¶8

So gently flows your song with honeyed drops.
