INTRODUCTION

¶2

This Kontakion on the passion of Christ is no longer used liturgically, as the first note on the translation explains. In the context of Christ’s suffering, the refrain “So that Adam may dance” is one of the boldest of all St Romanos’s refrains. Professor Andrew Louth’s Preface to my translation of St Romanos, *On the Life of Christ*, has a valuable discussion of the role played by the refrains for a proper understanding of the theology of the kontakion.
