Job 9

1Then Job answered and said:

ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει

2'I know that is true, But how can a mortal man be righteous before the Lord?

ἐπ᾿ ἀληθείας οἶδα ὅτι οὕτως ἐστίν πῶς γὰρ ἔσται δίκαιος βροτὸς παρὰ κυρίῳ

3If he should wish to enter into judgment with Him, The Lord would not listen to him, For he could not answer to one out of a thousand of His charges.

ἐὰν γὰρ βούληται κριθῆναι αὐτῷ οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσῃ αὐτῷ ἵνα μὴ ἀντείπῃ πρὸς ἕνα λόγον αὐτοῦ ἐκ χιλίων

4He is wise in mind and mighty and great. Who has hardened himself against Him and endured?

σοφὸς γάρ ἐστιν διανοίᾳ κραταιός τε καὶ μέγας τίς σκληρὸς γενόμενος ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὑπέμεινεν

5He who makes the mountains old, and men do not know it; He who overturns them in His wrath;

ὁ παλαιῶν ὄρη καὶ οὐκ οἴδασιν ὁ καταστρέφων αὐτὰ ὀργῇ

6He who shakes the earth under heaven from its foundations, And its pillars tremble;

ὁ σείων τὴν ὑπ᾿ οὐρανὸν ἐκ θεμελίων οἱ δὲ στῦλοι αὐτῆς σαλεύονται

7He who commands the sun, and it does not rise; He who seals off the stars;

ὁ λέγων τῷ ἡλίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνατέλλει κατὰ δὲ ἄστρων κατασφραγίζει

8He who alone stretches out heaven; He who walks on the sea as on firm ground;

ὁ τανύσας τὸν οὐρανὸν μόνος καὶ περιπατῶν ὡς ἐπ᾿ ἐδάφους ἐπὶ θαλάσσης

9He who makes Pleiades, Hesperus, and Arcturus, And the chambers of the south;

ὁ ποιῶν Πλειάδα καὶ ἕσπερον καὶ ἀρκτοῦρον καὶ ταμίεια νότου

10He who does great and unsearchable things, Glorious and marvelous things without number.

ὁ ποιῶν μεγάλα καὶ ἀνεξιχνίαστα ἔνδοξά τε καὶ ἐξαίσια ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός

11If He goes beyond me, I do not see Him; If He passes by me, I do not perceive Him;

ἐὰν ὑπερβῇ με οὐ μὴ ἴδω καὶ ἐὰν παρέλθῃ με οὐδ᾿ ὧς ἔγνων

12If He takes away, who can turn Him back? Who can say to Him, 'What have You done?'

ἐὰν ἀπαλλάξῃ τίς ἀποστρέψει ἢ τίς ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ τί ἐποίησας

13For if He turns away His wrath, The great sea creatures under heaven lie prostrate beneath Him.

αὐτὸς γὰρ ἀπέστραπται ὀργήν ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐκάμφθησαν κήτη τὰ ὑπ᾿ οὐρανόν

14'Would then that He would hear me, or judge my words.

ἐὰν δέ μου ὑπακούσηται ἦ διακρινεῖ τὰ ῥήματά μου

15For though I be righteous, He will not listen to me. I will entreat His judgment.

ἐάν τε γὰρ ὦ δίκαιος οὐκ εἰσακούσεταί μου τοῦ κρίματος αὐτοῦ δεηθήσομαι

16If I should call, and He hears me, I would not believe He is listening to me.

ἐάν τε καλέσω καὶ ὑπακούσῃ οὐ πιστεύω ὅτι εἰσακήκοέν μου

17Let Him not destroy me with darkness, But He has caused my great destruction to no purpose.

μὴ γνόφῳ με ἐκτρίψῃ πολλὰ δέ μου τὰ συντρίμματα πεποίηκεν διὰ κενῆς

18For He will not allow me to draw breath, But has filled me with bitterness.

οὐκ ἐᾷ γάρ με ἀναπνεῦσαι ἐνέπλησεν δέ με πικρίας

19For if He is strong in power, Who then can resist His judgment?

ὅτι μὲν γὰρ ἰσχύι κρατεῖ τίς οὖν κρίματι αὐτοῦ ἀντιστήσεται

20For though I were righteous, my mouth will be impious; And though I were blameless, I will be perverse.

ἐὰν γὰρ ὦ δίκαιος τὸ στόμα μου ἀσεβήσει ἐάν τε ὦ ἄμεμπτος σκολιὸς ἀποβήσομαι

21'If I am ungodly, I do not know it in my soul, But my life is taken away.

εἴτε γὰρ ἠσέβησα οὐκ οἶδα τῇ ψυχῇ πλὴν ὅτι ἀφαιρεῖταί μου ἡ ζωή

22Therefore I said, 'Wrath destroys the great and the mighty.'

διὸ εἶπον μέγαν καὶ δυνάστην ἀπολλύει ὀργή

23The wrongdoers die violently, But the righteous are laughed to scorn.

ὅτι φαῦλοι ἐν θανάτῳ ἐξαισίῳ ἀλλὰ δίκαιοι καταγελῶνται

24For they are delivered into the hands of the ungodly man. He covers the faces of the judges of the earth. If it is not He, who else could it be?

παραδέδονται γὰρ εἰς χεῖρας ἀσεβοῦς πρόσωπα κριτῶν αὐτῆς συγκαλύπτει εἰ δὲ μὴ αὐτός τίς ἐστιν

25'Now my life passes swifter than a runner; My days have fled away, and they do not see it.

ὁ δὲ βίος μού ἐστιν ἐλαφρότερος δρομέως ἀπέδρασαν καὶ οὐκ εἴδοσαν

26Do the ships leave a mark of their path? Or does a flying eagle leave a trace of its soaring as it seeks its prey?

ἦ καὶ ἔστιν ναυσὶν ἴχνος ὁδοῦ ἢ ἀετοῦ πετομένου ζητοῦντος βοράν

27If I say, 'I will forget to speak,' I will bow down my face and groan.

ἐάν τε γὰρ εἴπω ἐπιλήσομαι λαλῶν συγκύψας τῷ προσώπῳ στενάξω

28I shake with fear in all my limbs; I know You will not leave me as innocent.

σείομαι πᾶσιν τοῖς μέλεσιν οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἀθῷόν με ἐάσεις

29But since I am ungodly, why have I not died?

ἐπειδὴ δέ εἰμι ἀσεβής διὰ τί οὐκ ἀπέθανον

30If I should wash myself with snow And cleanse myself with pure hands,

ἐὰν γὰρ ἀπολούσωμαι χιόνι καὶ ἀποκαθάρωμαι χερσὶν καθαραῖς

31You have fully immersed me in filth, And my garment detests me.

ἱκανῶς ἐν ῥύπῳ με ἔβαψας ἐβδελύξατο δέ με ἡ στολή

32'For You are not a man, as I am, With whom I could contend, That we should go to judgment together.

οὐ γὰρ εἶ ἄνθρωπος κατ᾿ ἐμέ ᾧ ἀντικρινοῦμαι ἵνα ἔλθωμεν ὁμοθυμαδὸν εἰς κρίσιν

33Would that we had a mediator who would cross-examine And hear the case between us.

εἴθε ἦν ὁ μεσίτης ἡμῶν καὶ ἐλέγχων καὶ διακούων ἀνὰ μέσον ἀμφοτέρων

34Let Him remove the rod from me, And do not let the fear of Him distress me.

ἀπαλλαξάτω ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ τὴν ῥάβδον ὁ δὲ φόβος αὐτοῦ μή με στροβείτω

35Then I will not be afraid, but will speak, For I am not conscious of any guilt.

καὶ οὐ μὴ φοβηθῶ ἀλλὰ λαλήσω οὐ γὰρ οὕτω συνεπίσταμαι
