Job 21

1Then Job answered and said:

ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει

2That I may not have this consolation from you.

ἀκούσατε ἀκούσατέ μου τῶν λόγων ἵνα μὴ ᾖ μοι παρ᾿ ὑμῶν αὕτη ἡ παράκλησις

3Bear with me and I will speak; Then you will stop laughing at me.

ἄρατέ με ἐγὼ δὲ λαλήσω εἶτ᾿ οὐ καταγελάσετέ μου

4'What? Is there any one who does not blame me? Or why should I not be furious?

τί γάρ μὴ ἀνθρώπου μου ἡ ἔλεγξις ἢ διὰ τί οὐ θυμωθήσομαι

5Look at me and be astonished, And put your hand over your mouth.

εἰσβλέψαντες εἰς ἐμὲ θαυμάσατε χεῖρα θέντες ἐπὶ σιαγόνι

6For even when I remember, I am alarmed, And pains take hold of my flesh.

ἐάν τε γὰρ μνησθῶ ἐσπούδακα ἔχουσιν δέ μου τὰς σάρκας ὀδύναι

7Why do the ungodly live and become old, even in wealth?

διὰ τί ἀσεβεῖς ζῶσιν πεπαλαίωνται δὲ καὶ ἐν πλούτῳ

8Their offspring is according to their desire, And their children are before their eyes.

ὁ σπόρος αὐτῶν κατὰ ψυχήν τὰ δὲ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς

9Their houses flourish, and they have no cause for fear; Neither is there any affliction from the Lord upon them.

οἱ οἶκοι αὐτῶν εὐθηνοῦσιν φόβος δὲ οὐδαμοῦ μάστιξ δὲ παρὰ κυρίου οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῖς

10Their ox does not miscarry, For it is preserved safe during pregnancy And does not suffer a mishap.

ἡ βοῦς αὐτῶν οὐκ ὠμοτόκησεν διεσώθη δὲ αὐτῶν ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα καὶ οὐκ ἔσφαλεν

11They remain as an unfailing herd, And their children dance,

μένουσιν δὲ ὡς πρόβατα αἰώνια τὰ δὲ παιδία αὐτῶν προσπαίζουσιν

12Taking up the psaltery and harp; And they celebrate at the sound of song.

ἀναλαβόντες ψαλτήριον καὶ κιθάραν καὶ εὐφραίνονται φωνῇ ψαλμοῦ

13They spend their life in their good things And fall asleep in the rest of the grave.

συνετέλεσαν δὲ ἐν ἀγαθοῖς τὸν βίον αὐτῶν ἐν δὲ ἀναπαύσει ᾅδου ἐκοιμήθησαν

14Yet such a man says to the Lord, 'Depart from me. I do not wish to know Your ways.

λέγει δὲ κυρίῳ ἀπόστα ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ ὁδούς σου εἰδέναι οὐ βούλομαι

15What is a sufficient reason for us to serve Him? What benefit is it for us to meet Him?'

τί ἱκανός ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ καὶ τίς ὠφέλεια ὅτι ἀπαντήσομεν αὐτῷ

16For their good things are in their power, For He does not take notice of the works of the ungodly.

ἐν χερσὶν γὰρ ἦν αὐτῶν τὰ ἀγαθά ἔργα δὲ ἀσεβῶν οὐκ ἐφορᾷ

17'Nevertheless, the lamp of the ungodly will be put out. Destruction shall come upon them, And the sorrows of wrath will seize them.

οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀσεβῶν λύχνος σβεσθήσεται ἐπελεύσεται δὲ αὐτοῖς ἡ καταστροφή ὠδῖνες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἕξουσιν ἀπὸ ὀργῆς

18They are like chaff before the wind, And they are like dust a storm carries away.

ἔσονται δὲ ὥσπερ ἄχυρα πρὸ ἀνέμου ἢ ὥσπερ κονιορτός ὃν ὑφείλατο λαῖλαψ

19May his possessions fail to supply his children.

ἐκλίποι υἱοὺς τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσει πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ γνώσεται

20God will recompense him, and he will not know it. May his eyes see his own slaughter, And may he not be saved by the Lord.

ἴδοισαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ σφαγήν ἀπὸ δὲ κυρίου μὴ διασωθείη

21For is his will not in his house with himself? But the number of his months has been apportioned.

ὅτι τί θέλημα αὐτοῦ ἐν οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ μετ᾿ αὐτόν καὶ ἀριθμοὶ μηνῶν αὐτοῦ διῃρέθησαν

22'Is it not the Lord who teaches understanding and knowledge? Does not He judge murders?

πότερον οὐχὶ ὁ κύριός ἐστιν ὁ διδάσκων σύνεσιν καὶ ἐπιστήμην αὐτὸς δὲ φόνους διακρινεῖ

23One shall die in the strength of his simplicity, And wholly at ease and prosperous.

οὗτος ἀποθανεῖται ἐν κράτει ἁπλοσύνης αὐτοῦ ὅλος δὲ εὐπαθῶν καὶ εὐθηνῶν

24His innards are full of stiff fat, And the marrow of his bones is dissipated.

τὰ δὲ ἔγκατα αὐτοῦ πλήρη στέατος μυελὸς δὲ αὐτοῦ διαχεῖται

25Another dies under bitterness of soul, Not eating any good thing.

ὁ δὲ τελευτᾷ ὑπὸ πικρίας ψυχῆς οὐ φαγὼν οὐδὲν ἀγαθόν

26They lie down together in the earth, And decay covers them.

ὁμοθυμαδὸν δὲ ἐπὶ γῆς κοιμῶνται σαπρία δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐκάλυψεν

27Thus I know you press me recklessly.

ὥστε οἶδα ὑμᾶς ὅτι τόλμῃ ἐπίκεισθέ μοι

28You will say, 'Where is the house of the ruler? Where is the shelter of the dwelling place of the ungodly?'

ὅτι ἐρεῖτε ποῦ ἐστιν οἶκος ἄρχοντος καὶ ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ σκέπη τῶν σκηνωμάτων τῶν ἀσεβῶν

29Ask those who travel the road, And do not overlook their signs.

ἐρωτήσατε παραπορευομένους ὁδόν καὶ τὰ σημεῖα αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀπαλλοτριώσετε

30For the evil man makes light of the day of destruction, But they shall be led away in the day of His wrath.

ὅτι εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπωλείας κουφίζεται ὁ πονηρός εἰς ἡμέραν ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπαχθήσονται

31Who will tell him his way to his face? Who will recompense him for what he has done?

τίς ἀπαγγελεῖ ἐπὶ προσώπου αὐτοῦ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν τίς ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ

32Yet he is brought to the grave, And a vigil is kept over the coffin.

καὶ αὐτὸς εἰς τάφους ἀπηνέχθη καὶ ἐπὶ σορῷ ἠγρύπνησεν

33The pebbles of the valley have been sweet to him. Every man shall depart after him, As countless have departed before him.

ἐγλυκάνθησαν αὐτῷ χάλικες χειμάρρου καὶ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ἀπελεύσεται καὶ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ ἀναρίθμητοι

34How then can you comfort me with empty words, Since I have no rest from you?'

πῶς δὲ παρακαλεῖτέ με κενά τὸ δὲ ἐμὲ καταπαύσασθαι ἀφ᾿ ὑμῶν οὐδέν
