Job 14

1'For mortal man born of woman Is short-lived and full of wrath.

βροτὸς γὰρ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος καὶ πλήρης ὀργῆς

2He falls like a flower that blooms, And like a shadow, he does not continue.

ἢ ὥσπερ ἄνθος ἀνθῆσαν ἐξέπεσεν ἀπέδρα δὲ ὥσπερ σκιὰ καὶ οὐ μὴ στῇ

3Have You not taken account of him And brought him to judgment before You?

οὐχὶ καὶ τούτου λόγον ἐποιήσω καὶ τοῦτον ἐποίησας εἰσελθεῖν ἐν κρίματι ἐνώπιόν σου

4For who shall be pure from uncleanness? No one.

τίς γὰρ καθαρὸς ἔσται ἀπὸ ῥύπου ἀλλ᾿ οὐθείς

5Even if his life is but one day upon the earth, His months are numbered by You. You appointed a time for him, and he cannot exceed it.

ἐὰν καὶ μία ἡμέρα ὁ βίος αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀριθμητοὶ δὲ μῆνες αὐτοῦ παρὰ σοί εἰς χρόνον ἔθου καὶ οὐ μὴ ὑπερβῇ

6Depart from him that he may rest, And let him be pleased with his life as a hired laborer.

ἀπόστα ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἵνα ἡσυχάσῃ καὶ εὐδοκήσῃ τὸν βίον ὥσπερ ὁ μισθωτός

7'For there is hope for a tree, even if it is cut down, That it will sprout again, and its tender shoots will not fail.

ἔστιν γὰρ δένδρῳ ἐλπίς ἐὰν γὰρ ἐκκοπῇ ἔτι ἐπανθήσει καὶ ὁ ῥάδαμνος αὐτοῦ οὐ μὴ ἐκλίπῃ

8For though its root may grow old in the earth And its stump may die in the rocky ground,

ἐὰν γὰρ γηράσῃ ἐν γῇ ἡ ῥίζα αὐτοῦ ἐν δὲ πέτρᾳ τελευτήσῃ τὸ στέλεχος αὐτοῦ

9Yet at the scent of water it will bud And bring forth a crop like one newly planted.

ἀπὸ ὀσμῆς ὕδατος ἀνθήσει ποιήσει δὲ θερισμὸν ὥσπερ νεόφυτον

10But a man who dies is utterly gone, And when a mortal has fallen, he is no more.

ἀνὴρ δὲ τελευτήσας ᾤχετο πεσὼν δὲ βροτὸς οὐκέτι ἔστιν

11For in time the sea is drawn down, And a river stops flowing, And the river bed dries up.

χρόνῳ γὰρ σπανίζεται θάλασσα ποταμὸς δὲ ἐρημωθεὶς ἐξηράνθη

12So too, when man falls asleep in death, he will not rise, For the dead will not awake until heaven is dissolved.

ἄνθρωπος δὲ κοιμηθεὶς οὐ μὴ ἀναστῇ ἕως ἂν ὁ οὐρανὸς οὐ μὴ συρραφῇ καὶ οὐκ ἐξυπνισθήσονται ἐξ ὕπνου αὐτῶν

13'For would that You had kept me in the grave, That You had hidden me until Your wrath ceases, And that You would appoint me a set time In which You would remember me.

εἰ γὰρ ὄφελον ἐν ᾅδῃ με ἐφύλαξας ἔκρυψας δέ με ἕως ἂν παύσηταί σου ἡ ὀργὴ καὶ τάξῃ μοι χρόνον ἐν ᾧ μνείαν μου ποιήσῃ

14For will man live again After he completes his course of life and dies? I will wait until I arise.

ἐὰν γὰρ ἀποθάνῃ ἄνθρωπος ζήσεται συντελέσας ἡμέρας τοῦ βίου αὐτοῦ ὑπομενῶ ἕως ἂν πάλιν γένωμαι

15Then You will call, and I will answer You, But do not cast away the works of Your hands.

εἶτα καλέσεις ἐγὼ δέ σοι ὑπακούσομαι τὰ δὲ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σου μὴ ἀποποιοῦ

16For You have numbered my practices, And not one of my sins will escape You.

ἠρίθμησας δέ μου τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα καὶ οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ σε οὐδὲν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου

17You sealed up my lawlessness in a bag And marked if I transgressed unwillingly.

ἐσφράγισας δέ μου τὰς ἀνομίας ἐν βαλλαντίῳ ἐπεσημήνω δέ εἴ τι ἄκων παρέβην

18'Truly a mountain falls and crumbles in pieces; And a rock wears out in its place.

καὶ πλὴν ὄρος πῖπτον διαπεσεῖται καὶ πέτρα παλαιωθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῆς

19Waters wear away stones, And overflowing torrents wash away the soil of the earth; And You destroy the duration of man.

λίθους ἐλέαναν ὕδατα καὶ κατέκλυσεν ὕδατα ὕπτια τοῦ χώματος τῆς γῆς καὶ ὑπομονὴν ἀνθρώπου ἀπώλεσας

20You push him to his end, and he is gone. You set your face against him and send him away.

ὦσας αὐτὸν εἰς τέλος καὶ ᾤχετο ἐπέστησας αὐτῷ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ ἐξαπέστειλας

21If his children multiply themselves, he does not know it, And if they be few, he does not perceive it.

πολλῶν δὲ γενομένων τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ οὐκ οἶδεν ἐὰν δὲ ὀλίγοι γένωνται οὐκ ἐπίσταται

22But the muscles of his body feel pain, And his soul grieves.

ἀλλ᾿ ἢ αἱ σάρκες αὐτοῦ ἤλγησαν ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπένθησεν
