Job 4

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ελιφας ὁ Θαιμανίτης λέγει

2'Have you been often spoken to in distress? But now who shall endure the force of your words?

μὴ πολλάκις σοι λελάληται ἐν κόπῳ ἰσχὺν δὲ ῥημάτων σου τίς ὑποίσει

3For though you instructed many, And strengthened the hands of the weak one,

εἰ γὰρ σὺ ἐνουθέτησας πολλοὺς καὶ χεῖρας ἀσθενοῦς παρεκάλεσας

4And raised up the sick with your words, And imparted courage to feeble knees,

ἀσθενοῦντάς τε ἐξανέστησας ῥήμασιν γόνασίν τε ἀδυνατοῦσιν θάρσος περιέθηκας

5Yet now pain has come upon you and touched you; And you are anxious.

νῦν δὲ ἥκει ἐπὶ σὲ πόνος καὶ ἥψατό σου σὺ δὲ ἐσπούδασας

6Is not your fear, your hope, And the integrity of your way of life changed into folly?

πότερον οὐχ ὁ φόβος σού ἐστιν ἐν ἀφροσύνῃ καὶ ἡ ἐλπίς σου καὶ ἡ ἀκακία τῆς ὁδοῦ σου

7Can you remember any one pure who has perished, Or true people who were altogether uprooted?

μνήσθητι οὖν τίς καθαρὸς ὢν ἀπώλετο ἢ πότε ἀληθινοὶ ὁλόρριζοι ἀπώλοντο

8According to what I have seen, those who plow harmful things and those who sow them Will reap pain for themselves.

καθ᾿ ὃν τρόπον εἶδον τοὺς ἀροτριῶντας τὰ ἄτοπα οἱ δὲ σπείροντες αὐτὰ ὀδύνας θεριοῦσιν ἑαυτοῖς

9They will perish by the command of the Lord, And they will be destroyed by the breath of His wrath.

ἀπὸ προστάγματος κυρίου ἀπολοῦνται ἀπὸ δὲ πνεύματος ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἀφανισθήσονται

10The strength of the lion, the voice of the lioness, And the exulting cry of dragons are extinguished.

σθένος λέοντος φωνὴ δὲ λεαίνης γαυρίαμα δὲ δρακόντων ἐσβέσθη

11The old lion has perished for lack of prey, And the cubs of the lioness have left one another.

μυρμηκολέων ὤλετο παρὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν βοράν σκύμνοι δὲ λεόντων ἔλιπον ἀλλήλους

12'But if there had been any truth in your words, None of these evils would have befallen you. Shall not my ear receive extraordinary things from him?

εἰ δέ τι ῥῆμα ἀληθινὸν ἐγεγόνει ἐν λόγοις σου οὐθὲν ἄν σοι τούτων κακὸν ἀπήντησεν πότερον οὐ δέξεταί μου τὸ οὖς ἐξαίσια παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ

13But just as when terror falls upon men With dread at a noise in the night,

φόβοι δὲ καὶ ἠχὼ νυκτερινή ἐπιπίπτων φόβος ἐπ᾿ ἀνθρώπους

14Shivering and trembling befell me And caused my bones to shake.

φρίκη δέ μοι συνήντησεν καὶ τρόμος καὶ μεγάλως μου τὰ ὀστᾶ συνέσεισεν

15Then a spirit came before my face, And my hair and flesh shook with fear.

καὶ πνεῦμα ἐπὶ πρόσωπόν μου ἐπῆλθεν ἔφριξαν δέ μου τρίχες καὶ σάρκες

16I arose, but could not recognize it. I looked, and there was no form before my eyes, But rather a gentle breeze, and a voice, saying,

ἀνέστην καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνων εἶδον καὶ οὐκ ἦν μορφὴ πρὸ ὀφθαλμῶν μου ἀλλ᾿ ἢ αὔραν καὶ φωνὴν ἤκουον

17'What? Shall a mortal man be pure in the Lord's sight, Or blameless before Him in his works?

τί γάρ μὴ καθαρὸς ἔσται βροτὸς ἐναντίον κυρίου ἢ ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ ἄμεμπτος ἀνήρ

18If He puts no trust in His servants, And if He observes a perverse way in His angels,

εἰ κατὰ παίδων αὐτοῦ οὐ πιστεύει κατὰ δὲ ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ σκολιόν τι ἐπενόησεν

19How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, Of whom we also are formed of the same clay? Does not He smite them like a moth?

τοὺς δὲ κατοικοῦντας οἰκίας πηλίνας ἐξ ὧν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ πηλοῦ ἐσμεν ἔπαισεν αὐτοὺς σητὸς τρόπον

20They no longer exist from morning till evening; They have perished, for they cannot help themselves.

καὶ ἀπὸ πρωίθεν ἕως ἑσπέρας οὐκέτι εἰσίν παρὰ τὸ μὴ δύνασθαι αὐτοὺς ἑαυτοῖς βοηθῆσαι ἀπώλοντο

21For He blows upon them, and they are withered. They have perished for lack of wisdom.'

ἐνεφύσησεν γὰρ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐξηράνθησαν ἀπώλοντο παρὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν αὐτοὺς σοφίαν
