Job 20

1Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:

ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Σωφαρ ὁ Μιναῖος λέγει

2'I did not suppose you would answer in that way; Nor do you understand more than I.

οὐχ οὕτως ὑπελάμβανον ἀντερεῖν σε ταῦτα καὶ οὐχὶ συνίετε μᾶλλον ἢ καὶ ἐγώ

3I will heed the discipline of my humiliation, And the spirit of my understanding causes me to answer.

παιδείαν ἐντροπῆς μου ἀκούσομαι καὶ πνεῦμα ἐκ τῆς συνέσεως ἀποκρίνεταί μοι

4'Have you not heard these things of old— From the time man was put on the earth?

μὴ ταῦτα ἔγνως ἀπὸ τοῦ ἔτι ἀφ᾿ οὗ ἐτέθη ἄνθρωπος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς

5For the gladness of the ungodly is a disastrous fall, And the joy of transgressors is destruction.

εὐφροσύνη γὰρ ἀσεβῶν πτῶμα ἐξαίσιον χαρμονὴ δὲ παρανόμων ἀπώλεια

6Though his gifts ascend to heaven And his sacrifice touches the clouds,

ἐὰν ἀναβῇ εἰς οὐρανὸν αὐτοῦ τὰ δῶρα ἡ δὲ θυσία αὐτοῦ νεφῶν ἅψηται

7Just when he already seems to be established, Then he shall utterly perish; And those who knew him will say, 'Where is he?'

ὅταν γὰρ δοκῇ ἤδη κατεστηρίχθαι τότε εἰς τέλος ἀπολεῖται οἱ δὲ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐροῦσιν ποῦ ἐστιν

8Like a dream he flew away and cannot be found; And he fled like a vision of the night.

ὥσπερ ἐνύπνιον ἐκπετασθὲν οὐ μὴ εὑρεθῇ ἔπτη δὲ ὥσπερ φάσμα νυκτερινόν

9The eye observed him, but will see him no more; Nor will his place any longer behold him.

ὀφθαλμὸς παρέβλεψεν καὶ οὐ προσθήσει καὶ οὐκέτι προσνοήσει αὐτὸν ὁ τόπος αὐτοῦ

10May his children perish, And may his vile hands kindle the fire of sorrows.

τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ὀλέσαισαν ἥττονες αἱ δὲ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ πυρσεύσαισαν ὀδύνας

11His bones were full of his youthful vigor, Which will lie down with him in the dust.

ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ ἐνεπλήσθησαν νεότητος αὐτοῦ καὶ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ χώματος κοιμηθήσεται

12Though evil is sweet in his mouth, And he will hide it under his tongue,

ἐὰν γλυκανθῇ ἐν στόματι αὐτοῦ κακία κρύψει αὐτὴν ὑπὸ τὴν γλῶσσαν αὐτοῦ

13Though he will not spare it and will not forsake it, But will hold it fast in the midst of his throat,

οὐ φείσεται αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ ἐγκαταλείψει αὐτὴν καὶ συνέξει αὐτὴν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ λάρυγγος αὐτοῦ

14Yet he shall be unable to help himself, For the gall of an asp is in his belly.

καὶ οὐ μὴ δυνηθῇ βοηθῆσαι ἑαυτῷ χολὴ ἀσπίδος ἐν γαστρὶ αὐτοῦ

15His wealth gathered unjustly shall be vomited up, And a messenger will drag him out of his house.

πλοῦτος ἀδίκως συναγόμενος ἐξεμεσθήσεται ἐξ οἰκίας αὐτοῦ ἐξελκύσει αὐτὸν ἄγγελος

16May he nurse on the anger of serpents; And may a snake's tongue kill him.

θυμὸν δὲ δρακόντων θηλάσειεν ἀνέλοι δὲ αὐτὸν γλῶσσα ὄφεως

17May he not see the milk of the pastures, Nor his supplies of honey and butter.

μὴ ἴδοι ἄμελξιν νομάδων μηδὲ νομὰς μέλιτος καὶ βουτύρου

18In vain he has labored unprofitably for wealth, Of which he will not taste; For it is like tough meat that he cannot chew.

εἰς κενὰ καὶ μάταια ἐκοπίασεν πλοῦτον ἐξ οὗ οὐ γεύσεται ὥσπερ στρίφνος ἀμάσητος ἀκατάποτος

19For he crushed the houses of many weak people. He plundered their dwelling and caused it to cease.

πολλῶν γὰρ ἀδυνάτων οἴκους ἔθλασεν δίαιταν δὲ ἥρπασεν καὶ οὐκ ἔστησεν

20'There is no salvation in his possessions, For he will not be saved by what he desired.

οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῦ σωτηρία τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν ἐν ἐπιθυμίᾳ αὐτοῦ οὐ σωθήσεται

21Nothing is left for him to eat; Therefore, his good things will not flourish.

οὐκ ἔστιν ὑπόλειμμα τοῖς βρώμασιν αὐτοῦ διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἀνθήσει αὐτοῦ τὰ ἀγαθά

22But when he at last seems to be satisfied, he will be distressed, For every trouble will come upon him.

ὅταν δὲ δοκῇ ἤδη πεπληρῶσθαι θλιβήσεται πᾶσα δὲ ἀνάγκη ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν ἐπελεύσεται

23If he were to satisfy his stomach in some way, Let God send the fury of wrath upon him, And may He bathe him in sorrows.

εἴ πως πληρώσαι γαστέρα αὐτοῦ ἐπαποστείλαι ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν θυμὸν ὀργῆς νίψαι ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν ὀδύνας

24He will not be saved from the power of the sword; May a bronze bow wound him.

καὶ οὐ μὴ σωθῇ ἐκ χειρὸς σιδήρου τρώσαι αὐτὸν τόξον χάλκειον

25May an arrow pass through his body, And may lightning strike his dwelling. May terrors come upon him.

διεξέλθοι δὲ διὰ σώματος αὐτοῦ βέλος ἀστραπαὶ δὲ ἐν διαίταις αὐτοῦ περιπατήσαισαν ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ φόβοι

26May total darkness await him. A fire that will not go out will consume him. May a stranger ruin his house.

πᾶν δὲ σκότος αὐτῷ ὑπομείναι κατέδεται αὐτὸν πῦρ ἄκαυστον κακώσαι δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπήλυτος τὸν οἶκον

27May heaven uncover his lawlessness, And may the earth rise up against him.

ἀνακαλύψαι δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ οὐρανὸς τὰς ἀνομίας γῆ δὲ ἐπανασταίη αὐτῷ

28May destruction bring his house to an end, And may a day of wrath come upon him.

ἑλκύσαι τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεια εἰς τέλος ἡμέρα ὀργῆς ἐπέλθοι αὐτῷ

29This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, And the heritage appointed to him from the One who watches him.'

αὕτη ἡ μερὶς ἀνθρώπου ἀσεβοῦς παρὰ κυρίου καὶ κτῆμα ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ παρὰ τοῦ ἐπισκόπου
