Job 11

1Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:

ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Σωφαρ ὁ Μιναῖος λέγει

2'He who speaks much should also listen in turn, Or does the fluent speaker think himself to be righteous? Blessed is the short-lived offspring of a woman.

ὁ τὰ πολλὰ λέγων καὶ ἀντακούσεται ἢ καὶ ὁ εὔλαλος οἴεται εἶναι δίκαιος εὐλογημένος γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος

3Do not be wordy in your speech, For there is no one to reply to you.

μὴ πολὺς ἐν ῥήμασιν γίνου οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἀντικρινόμενός σοι

4Do not say, 'I am pure in my works And blameless before Him.'

μὴ γὰρ λέγε ὅτι καθαρός εἰμι τοῖς ἔργοις καὶ ἄμεμπτος ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ

5But how does the Lord speak to you? He will open His lips against you.

ἀλλὰ πῶς ἂν ὁ κύριος λαλήσαι πρὸς σέ καὶ ἀνοίξει χείλη αὐτοῦ μετὰ σοῦ

6Then He will declare to you the power of wisdom, For it shall be double in your case. At that time you will know a worthy recompense Has come to you from the Lord because of your sins.

εἶτα ἀναγγελεῖ σοι δύναμιν σοφίας ὅτι διπλοῦς ἔσται τῶν κατὰ σέ καὶ τότε γνώσῃ ὅτι ἄξιά σοι ἀπέβη ἀπὸ κυρίου ὧν ἡμάρτηκας

7Will you find the traces of the Lord? Have you reached the outer extremities Of what the Almighty has made?

ἦ ἴχνος κυρίου εὑρήσεις ἢ εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα ἀφίκου ἃ ἐποίησεν ὁ παντοκράτωρ

8Heaven is high, and what will you do? And what do you know, For there are even deeper things in Hades?

ὑψηλὸς ὁ οὐρανός καὶ τί ποιήσεις βαθύτερα δὲ τῶν ἐν ᾅδου τί οἶδας

9Do you know those dimensions That are longer than the earth and broader than the sea?

ἢ μακρότερα μέτρου γῆς ἢ εὔρους θαλάσσης

10If He should overthrow everything, Who then will say to Him, 'What have You done?'

ἐὰν δὲ καταστρέψῃ τὰ πάντα τίς ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ τί ἐποίησας

11For He knows the works of the lawless; And when He sees wrongs, He shall not overlook them.

αὐτὸς γὰρ οἶδεν ἔργα ἀνόμων ἰδὼν δὲ ἄτοπα οὐ παρόψεται

12But man vainly swims in words, And a mortal born of a woman is equal to a donkey in the desert.

ἄνθρωπος δὲ ἄλλως νήχεται λόγοις βροτὸς δὲ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ἴσα ὄνῳ ἐρημίτῃ

13If you have made your heart pure And stretch out your hands toward Him,

εἰ γὰρ σὺ καθαρὰν ἔθου τὴν καρδίαν σου ὑπτιάζεις δὲ χεῖρας πρὸς αὐτόν

14If something lawless is done by your hands, Put it far away from you; And do not let any wrongdoing lodge in your dwelling.

εἰ ἄνομόν τί ἐστιν ἐν χερσίν σου πόρρω ποίησον αὐτὸ ἀπὸ σοῦ ἀδικία δὲ ἐν διαίτῃ σου μὴ αὐλισθήτω

15For in this way, your face will shine forth like pure water, For you will cleanse away the filth. You will not fear.

οὕτως γὰρ ἀναλάμψει σου τὸ πρόσωπον ὥσπερ ὕδωρ καθαρόν ἐκδύσῃ δὲ ῥύπον καὶ οὐ μὴ φοβηθῇς

16Then you will forget this hardship Like a wave that has passed away; And you will not be terrified.

καὶ τὸν κόπον ἐπιλήσῃ ὥσπερ κῦμα παρελθὸν καὶ οὐ πτοηθήσῃ

17Your prayer will be like the morning star. At midday, life will rise to you.

ἡ δὲ εὐχή σου ὥσπερ ἑωσφόρος ἐκ δὲ μεσημβρίας ἀνατελεῖ σοι ζωή

18You will be confident because you have hope; And peace shall bring light to you out of anxiety and care.

πεποιθώς τε ἔσῃ ὅτι ἔστιν σοι ἐλπίς ἐκ δὲ μερίμνης καὶ φροντίδος ἀναφανεῖταί σοι εἰρήνη

19You will also be at rest, And there will be no one to fight against you. Many will change their mind about you and supplicate you.

ἡσυχάσεις γάρ καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ πολεμῶν σε μεταβαλόμενοι δὲ πολλοί σου δεηθήσονται

20But salvation will forsake them, for their hope will be lost, And the eyes of the ungodly will melt away.'

σωτηρία δὲ αὐτοὺς ἀπολείψει ἡ γὰρ ἐλπὶς αὐτῶν ἀπώλεια ὀφθαλμοὶ δὲ ἀσεβῶν τακήσονται
