Isaiah 5

1Now I will sing to My Beloved a song of My Beloved regarding My vineyard: There was a vineyard for My Beloved, a place in power and richness.

ᾄσω δὴ τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ ᾆσμα τοῦ ἀγαπητοῦ τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου ἀμπελὼν ἐγενήθη τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ ἐν κέρατι ἐν τόπῳ πίονι

2He placed a wall around it and fortified it. He planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst and also made a winepress in it. So I waited for it to bring forth grapes, but it produced thorn-plants.

καὶ φραγμὸν περιέθηκα καὶ ἐχαράκωσα καὶ ἐφύτευσα ἄμπελον σωρηχ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησα πύργον ἐν μέσῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ προλήνιον ὤρυξα ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι σταφυλήν ἐποίησεν δὲ ἀκάνθας

3And now, man of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, judge between Me and My vineyard.

καὶ νῦν ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Ιουδα καὶ οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν Ιερουσαλημ κρίνατε ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ἀμπελῶνός μου

4What shall I yet do for My vineyard that I have not done for it? For I waited for it to bring forth grapes, but it produced thorn-plants.

τί ποιήσω ἔτι τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησα αὐτῷ διότι ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι σταφυλήν ἐποίησεν δὲ ἀκάνθας

5But now I will tell you what I shall do to My vineyard: I shall remove its wall and it shall be for booty. I shall break down its wall and it shall be trampled underfoot.

νῦν δὲ ἀναγγελῶ ὑμῖν τί ποιήσω τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου ἀφελῶ τὸν φραγμὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσται εἰς διαρπαγήν καὶ καθελῶ τὸν τοῖχον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσται εἰς καταπάτημα

6I will forsake My vineyard. It shall not be pruned or cultivated, but thorns shall sprout forth as in a barren land. I will also command the clouds not to rain on it.'

καὶ ἀνήσω τὸν ἀμπελῶνά μου καὶ οὐ μὴ τμηθῇ οὐδὲ μὴ σκαφῇ καὶ ἀναβήσεται εἰς αὐτὸν ὡς εἰς χέρσον ἄκανθα καὶ ταῖς νεφέλαις ἐντελοῦμαι τοῦ μὴ βρέξαι εἰς αὐτὸν ὑετόν

7For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the man of Judah is His beloved plant. I waited for it to bring forth judgment, but it brought forth lawlessness, and not righteousness, but a cry.

ὁ γὰρ ἀμπελὼν κυρίου σαβαωθ οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ ἐστίν καὶ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Ιουδα νεόφυτον ἠγαπημένον ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι κρίσιν ἐποίησεν δὲ ἀνομίαν καὶ οὐ δικαιοσύνην ἀλλὰ κραυγήν

8Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, to take something from their neighbor. Surely you will not dwell alone in the land.

οὐαὶ οἱ συνάπτοντες οἰκίαν πρὸς οἰκίαν καὶ ἀγρὸν πρὸς ἀγρὸν ἐγγίζοντες ἵνα τοῦ πλησίον ἀφέλωνταί τι μὴ οἰκήσετε μόνοι ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς

9For these things reached the ears of the Lord of hosts, for though many large and beautiful houses should be built, they shall be desolate, for there shall be no one to live in them.

ἠκούσθη γὰρ εἰς τὰ ὦτα κυρίου σαβαωθ ταῦτα ἐὰν γὰρ γένωνται οἰκίαι πολλαί εἰς ἔρημον ἔσονται μεγάλαι καὶ καλαί καὶ οὐκ ἔσονται οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν αὐταῖς

10For where ten yoke of oxen shall work, the land shall yield one jar, and whoever sows six homers shall receive three measures.

οὗ γὰρ ἐργῶνται δέκα ζεύγη βοῶν ποιήσει κεράμιον ἕν καὶ ὁ σπείρων ἀρτάβας ἓξ ποιήσει μέτρα τρία

11Woe to those who rise early in the morning to follow intoxicating drink; to those who continue until night, for wine shall inflame them.

οὐαὶ οἱ ἐγειρόμενοι τὸ πρωὶ καὶ τὸ σικερα διώκοντες οἱ μένοντες τὸ ὀψέ ὁ γὰρ οἶνος αὐτοὺς συγκαύσει

12For they drink wine with the harp, the strings, the tambourine and flute, but they do not look at the deeds of the Lord, nor consider the works of His hands!

μετὰ γὰρ κιθάρας καὶ ψαλτηρίου καὶ τυμπάνων καὶ αὐλῶν τὸν οἶνον πίνουσιν τὰ δὲ ἔργα κυρίου οὐκ ἐμβλέπουσιν καὶ τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ οὐ κατανοοῦσιν

13Therefore my people became captives, because they did not know the Lord; and a multitude died through hunger and thirst for water.

τοίνυν αἰχμάλωτος ὁ λαός μου ἐγενήθη διὰ τὸ μὴ εἰδέναι αὐτοὺς τὸν κύριον καὶ πλῆθος ἐγενήθη νεκρῶν διὰ λιμὸν καὶ δίψαν ὕδατος

14Hades enlarged itself and opened its mouth continually. The glorious, the great, the wealthy, and the troublesome shall descend into it.

καὶ ἐπλάτυνεν ὁ ᾅδης τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ διήνοιξεν τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ διαλιπεῖν καὶ καταβήσονται οἱ ἔνδοξοι καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι καὶ οἱ πλούσιοι καὶ οἱ λοιμοὶ αὐτῆς

15A man shall be humiliated, and a man shall be dishonored; and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled.

καὶ ταπεινωθήσεται ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἀτιμασθήσεται ἀνήρ καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ οἱ μετέωροι ταπεινωθήσονται

16But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and the Holy God shall be glorified in righteousness.

καὶ ὑψωθήσεται κύριος σαβαωθ ἐν κρίματι καὶ ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἅγιος δοξασθήσεται ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ

17Those plundered shall be fed as bulls, and lambs shall eat on the waste places of those taken away.

καὶ βοσκηθήσονται οἱ διηρπασμένοι ὡς ταῦροι καὶ τὰς ἐρήμους τῶν ἀπειλημμένων ἄρνες φάγονται

18Woe to those who draw sins to themselves as with a long rope and lawlessness as with the strap of a cow's yoke,

οὐαὶ οἱ ἐπισπώμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας ὡς σχοινίῳ μακρῷ καὶ ὡς ζυγοῦ ἱμάντι δαμάλεως τὰς ἀνομίας

19who say, 'Let Him speedily hasten what He will do that we may see it, and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel come, that we may know it!'

οἱ λέγοντες τὸ τάχος ἐγγισάτω ἃ ποιήσει ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ ἐλθάτω ἡ βουλὴ τοῦ ἁγίου Ισραηλ ἵνα γνῶμεν

20Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

οὐαὶ οἱ λέγοντες τὸ πονηρὸν καλὸν καὶ τὸ καλὸν πονηρόν οἱ τιθέντες τὸ σκότος φῶς καὶ τὸ φῶς σκότος οἱ τιθέντες τὸ πικρὸν γλυκὺ καὶ τὸ γλυκὺ πικρόν

21Woe to those who are intelligent in their own eyes and expert in their own sight!

οὐαὶ οἱ συνετοὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐνώπιον ἑαυτῶν ἐπιστήμονες

22Woe to your strong ones who drink wine and the mighty ones who mix intoxicating drink,

οὐαὶ οἱ ἰσχύοντες ὑμῶν οἱ τὸν οἶνον πίνοντες καὶ οἱ δυνάσται οἱ κεραννύντες τὸ σικερα

23who justify the ungodly for a bribe and take away justice from the righteous man!

οἱ δικαιοῦντες τὸν ἀσεβῆ ἕνεκεν δώρων καὶ τὸ δίκαιον τοῦ δικαίου αἴροντες

24Therefore in the manner that stubble shall be burned by coals of fire and consumed by a violent flame, their root shall be like chaff and their flower shall go up like dust, for they did not will to do the law of the Lord of hosts, but despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

διὰ τοῦτο ὃν τρόπον καυθήσεται καλάμη ὑπὸ ἄνθρακος πυρὸς καὶ συγκαυθήσεται ὑπὸ φλογὸς ἀνειμένης ἡ ῥίζα αὐτῶν ὡς χνοῦς ἔσται καὶ τὸ ἄνθος αὐτῶν ὡς κονιορτὸς ἀναβήσεται οὐ γὰρ ἠθέλησαν τὸν νόμον κυρίου σαβαωθ ἀλλὰ τὸ λόγιον τοῦ ἁγίου Ισραηλ παρώξυναν

25Thus the wrath of the Lord of hosts is furious against His people. He laid His hand on them and struck them. The mountains were provoked, and their carcasses were as refuse in the midst of the road. For all this His anger was not turned away, but His hand is still uplifted.

καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ κύριος σαβαωθ ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπέβαλεν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπ᾿ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτούς καὶ παρωξύνθη τὰ ὄρη καὶ ἐγενήθη τὰ θνησιμαῖα αὐτῶν ὡς κοπρία ἐν μέσῳ ὁδοῦ καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις οὐκ ἀπεστράφη ὁ θυμός ἀλλ᾿ ἔτι ἡ χεὶρ ὑψηλή

26Consequently He shall take up a banner to the nations from afar and will whistle to them from the ends of the earth. Behold, they are coming swiftly and with speed.

τοιγαροῦν ἀρεῖ σύσσημον ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν τοῖς μακρὰν καὶ συριεῖ αὐτοῖς ἀπ᾿ ἄκρου τῆς γῆς καὶ ἰδοὺ ταχὺ κούφως ἔρχονται

27They shall not hunger or be weary. Neither shall they slumber nor sleep. Nor shall they loose the belts from their loins. Neither shall their sandal-straps be broken.

οὐ πεινάσουσιν οὐδὲ κοπιάσουσιν οὐδὲ νυστάξουσιν οὐδὲ κοιμηθήσονται οὐδὲ λύσουσιν τὰς ζώνας αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῆς ὀσφύος αὐτῶν οὐδὲ μὴ ῥαγῶσιν οἱ ἱμάντες τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτῶν

28Their arrows are sharp, and their bows are bent. The hooves of their horses seem like flint and their chariot-wheels like a sudden blast of wind.

ὧν τὰ βέλη ὀξεῖά ἐστιν καὶ τὰ τόξα αὐτῶν ἐντεταμένα οἱ πόδες τῶν ἵππων αὐτῶν ὡς στερεὰ πέτρα ἐλογίσθησαν οἱ τροχοὶ τῶν ἁρμάτων αὐτῶν ὡς καταιγίς

29They rush like lions, and stand like a young lion that seizes his prey and roars like a wild animal, then carries it away; and there shall be no one to deliver them.

ὁρμῶσιν ὡς λέοντες καὶ παρέστηκαν ὡς σκύμνος λέοντος καὶ ἐπιλήμψεται καὶ βοήσει ὡς θηρίου καὶ ἐκβαλεῖ καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ ῥυόμενος αὐτούς

30In that day, they will bellow against them like the sound of the roaring sea. They will look at the land and behold harsh darkness in their despair.

καὶ βοήσει δι᾿ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ὡς φωνὴ θαλάσσης κυμαινούσης καὶ ἐμβλέψονται εἰς τὴν γῆν καὶ ἰδοὺ σκότος σκληρὸν ἐν τῇ ἀπορίᾳ αὐτῶν
