Isaiah 28

1Woe to the crown of arrogance, the hirelings of Ephraim, the flower that fell from the glory on top of the fertile mountain, those who are drunk without wine.

οὐαὶ τῷ στεφάνῳ τῆς ὕβρεως οἱ μισθωτοὶ Εφραιμ τὸ ἄνθος τὸ ἐκπεσὸν ἐκ τῆς δόξης ἐπὶ τῆς κορυφῆς τοῦ ὄρους τοῦ παχέος οἱ μεθύοντες ἄνευ οἴνου

2Behold, the anger of the Lord is a strong and harsh thing, like a falling hail where there is no shelter, falling violently like a great force of water, sweeping away the country. He shall bring relief for the earth with His hands.

ἰδοὺ ἰσχυρὸν καὶ σκληρὸν ὁ θυμὸς κυρίου ὡς χάλαζα καταφερομένη οὐκ ἔχουσα σκέπην βίᾳ καταφερομένη ὡς ὕδατος πολὺ πλῆθος σῦρον χώραν τῇ γῇ ποιήσει ἀνάπαυσιν ταῖς χερσίν

3The crown of arrogance, the hirelings of Ephraim, will be trampled underfoot.

καὶ τοῖς ποσὶν καταπατηθήσεται ὁ στέφανος τῆς ὕβρεως οἱ μισθωτοὶ τοῦ Εφραιμ

4But the flower that fell from the hope of the glory on the top of the high mountain shall be like the forerunner of the fig. He who sees it wishes to swallow it before he gets it in his hand.

καὶ ἔσται τὸ ἄνθος τὸ ἐκπεσὸν τῆς ἐλπίδος τῆς δόξης ἐπ᾿ ἄκρου τοῦ ὄρους τοῦ ὑψηλοῦ ὡς πρόδρομος σύκου ὁ ἰδὼν αὐτὸ πρὶν ἢ εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ λαβεῖν θελήσει αὐτὸ καταπιεῖν

5In that day, the Lord of hosts shall be the crown of hope, woven of glory, to the remnant of My people.

τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἔσται κύριος σαβαωθ ὁ στέφανος τῆς ἐλπίδος ὁ πλακεὶς τῆς δόξης τῷ καταλειφθέντι μου λαῷ

6They shall be left in a spirit of judgment upon judgment and for the strength of those who prevent slaying.

καταλειφθήσονται ἐπὶ πνεύματι κρίσεως ἐπὶ κρίσιν καὶ ἰσχὺν κωλύων ἀνελεῖν

7For these are led astray with wine and are deceived by strong drink. Priest and prophet are out of their minds by reason of wine; they stagger because of drunkenness; they go astray. This is delusion.

οὗτοι γὰρ οἴνῳ πεπλανημένοι εἰσίν ἐπλανήθησαν διὰ τὸ σικερα ἱερεὺς καὶ προφήτης ἐξέστησαν διὰ τὸν οἶνον ἐσείσθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς μέθης τοῦ σικερα ἐπλανήθησαν τοῦτ᾿ ἔστι φάσμα

8A curse will devour this counsel, for this counsel was for the sake of covetousness.

ἀρὰ ἔδεται ταύτην τὴν βουλήν αὕτη γὰρ ἡ βουλὴ ἕνεκεν πλεονεξίας

9To whom have we reported evils and declared a message? Those weaned from milk and withdrawn from the breasts.

τίνι ἀνηγγείλαμεν κακὰ καὶ τίνι ἀνηγγείλαμεν ἀγγελίαν οἱ ἀπογεγαλακτισμένοι ἀπὸ γάλακτος οἱ ἀπεσπασμένοι ἀπὸ μαστοῦ

10Expect affliction upon affliction, hope upon hope, yet a little, yet a little.

θλῖψιν ἐπὶ θλῖψιν προσδέχου ἐλπίδα ἐπ᾿ ἐλπίδι ἔτι μικρὸν ἔτι μικρὸν

11By reason of the contempt of lips and another tongue they will speak to this people,

διὰ φαυλισμὸν χειλέων διὰ γλώσσης ἑτέρας ὅτι λαλήσουσιν τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ

12saying to them, 'This is the rest for the hungry, and this is the affliction,' but they would not listen.

λέγοντες αὐτῷ τοῦτο τὸ ἀνάπαυμα τῷ πεινῶντι καὶ τοῦτο τὸ σύντριμμα καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησαν ἀκούειν

13The teaching of the Lord God will be for them affliction upon affliction, hope upon hope, yet a little, yet a little, so they may go and fall backward; and they will be in danger, crushed and conquered.

καὶ ἔσται αὐτοῖς τὸ λόγιον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ θλῖψις ἐπὶ θλῖψιν ἐλπὶς ἐπ᾿ ἐλπίδι ἔτι μικρὸν ἔτι μικρόν ἵνα πορευθῶσιν καὶ πέσωσιν εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ κινδυνεύσουσιν καὶ συντριβήσονται καὶ ἁλώσονται

14Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you afflicted men and rulers of this people in Jerusalem.

διὰ τοῦτο ἀκούσατε λόγον κυρίου ἄνδρες τεθλιμμένοι καὶ ἄρχοντες τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου τοῦ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ

15Because you said, 'We made a covenant with Hades, and are in agreement with death, and if the rushing storm passes through, it will not come upon us, for we made falsehood our hope, and in falsehood we shall be protected';

ὅτι εἴπατε ἐποιήσαμεν διαθήκην μετὰ τοῦ ᾅδου καὶ μετὰ τοῦ θανάτου συνθήκας καταιγὶς φερομένη ἐὰν παρέλθῃ οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ ἐφ᾿ ἡμᾶς ἐθήκαμεν ψεῦδος τὴν ἐλπίδα ἡμῶν καὶ τῷ ψεύδει σκεπασθησόμεθα

16therefore, thus says the Lord: 'Behold, I lay for the foundations of Zion a costly stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone for its foundations, and whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame.

διὰ τοῦτο οὕτως λέγει κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐμβαλῶ εἰς τὰ θεμέλια Σιων λίθον πολυτελῆ ἐκλεκτὸν ἀκρογωνιαῖον ἔντιμον εἰς τὰ θεμέλια αὐτῆς καὶ ὁ πιστεύων ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ οὐ μὴ καταισχυνθῇ

17I will also cause judgment to be for hope, and My mercy to be for a standard. The sudden blast of wind will not pass by you who trust vainly in falsehood,

καὶ θήσω κρίσιν εἰς ἐλπίδα ἡ δὲ ἐλεημοσύνη μου εἰς σταθμούς καὶ οἱ πεποιθότες μάτην ψεύδει ὅτι οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ὑμᾶς καταιγίς

18except it also take away your covenant of death. Your hope in Hades will also not stand when the rushing storm passes through, for you will be beaten down by it.

μὴ καὶ ἀφέλῃ ὑμῶν τὴν διαθήκην τοῦ θανάτου καὶ ἡ ἐλπὶς ὑμῶν ἡ πρὸς τὸν ᾅδην οὐ μὴ ἐμμείνῃ καταιγὶς φερομένη ἐὰν ἐπέλθῃ ἔσεσθε αὐτῇ εἰς καταπάτημα

19When it passes through, it will take you; for morning by morning it will pass through by day, and by night there will be an evil hope.' Learn to listen,

ὅταν παρέλθῃ λήμψεται ὑμᾶς πρωὶ πρωὶ παρελεύσεται ἡμέρας καὶ ἐν νυκτὶ ἔσται ἐλπὶς πονηρά μάθετε ἀκούειν

20you in difficult straits. We cannot fight, and we ourselves are too weak to gather ourselves together.

στενοχωρούμενοι οὐ δυνάμεθα μάχεσθαι αὐτοὶ δὲ ἀσθενοῦμεν τοῦ ἡμᾶς συναχθῆναι

21As the mountain of the ungodly will rise up and be in the valley of Gibeon, He will do His deeds in anger, a work of bitterness. His anger will behave strangely, and His bitterness will be strange.

ὥσπερ ὄρος ἀσεβῶν ἀναστήσεται καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ φάραγγι Γαβαων μετὰ θυμοῦ ποιήσει τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πικρίας ἔργον ὁ δὲ θυμὸς αὐτοῦ ἀλλοτρίως χρήσεται καὶ ἡ πικρία αὐτοῦ ἀλλοτρία

22So do not be glad, neither let your bands become strong; because I heard from the Lord of hosts the things He will perform upon all the earth.

καὶ ὑμεῖς μὴ εὐφρανθείητε μηδὲ ἰσχυσάτωσαν ὑμῶν οἱ δεσμοί διότι συντετελεσμένα καὶ συντετμημένα πράγματα ἤκουσα παρὰ κυρίου σαβαωθ ἃ ποιήσει ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν

23Give ear and hear my voice. Listen and hear my words.

ἐνωτίζεσθε καὶ ἀκούετε τῆς φωνῆς μου προσέχετε καὶ ἀκούετε τοὺς λόγους μου

24Will the plowman plow all day? Or will he prepare the seed before he cultivates the ground?

μὴ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν μέλλει ὁ ἀροτριῶν ἀροτριᾶν ἢ σπόρον προετοιμάσει πρὶν ἐργάσασθαι τὴν γῆν

25When he levels its surface, does he not then sow the small black cummin, and afterward sow the wheat, the barley, and the oneseeded wheat in your borders?

οὐχ ὅταν ὁμαλίσῃ αὐτῆς τὸ πρόσωπον τότε σπείρει μικρὸν μελάνθιον καὶ κύμινον καὶ πάλιν σπείρει πυρὸν καὶ κριθὴν καὶ ζέαν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις σου

26So you will be chastised by the judgment of your God and be gladdened by it.

καὶ παιδευθήσῃ κρίματι θεοῦ σου καὶ εὐφρανθήσῃ

27For the black cummin is not cleansed with harshness, nor will the wheel of a wagon roll over the cummin; but the black cummin is threshed with a stick, and the cummin

οὐ γὰρ μετὰ σκληρότητος καθαίρεται τὸ μελάνθιον οὐδὲ τροχὸς ἁμάξης περιάξει ἐπὶ τὸ κύμινον ἀλλὰ ῥάβδῳ ἐκτινάσσεται τὸ μελάνθιον τὸ δὲ κύμινον

28will be eaten with bread. For I will not be angry with you forever, nor will the voice of my bitterness trample you underfoot.

μετὰ ἄρτου βρωθήσεται οὐ γὰρ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἐγὼ ὑμῖν ὀργισθήσομαι οὐδὲ φωνὴ τῆς πικρίας μου καταπατήσει ὑμᾶς

29These signs came forth from the Lord of hosts. Take counsel; exalt vain comfort.

καὶ ταῦτα παρὰ κυρίου σαβαωθ ἐξῆλθεν τὰ τέρατα βουλεύσασθε ὑψώσατε ματαίαν παράκλησιν
