Wisdom of Solomon 8

1Wisdom stretches out from one end of the earth to the other, And she governs all things well.

διατείνει δὲ ἀπὸ πέρατος ἐπὶ πέρας εὐρώστως καὶ διοικεῖ τὰ πάντα χρηστῶς

2I loved her and sought her from my youth, And desired to take her as a bride for myself; And I became a lover of her beauty.

ταύτην ἐφίλησα καὶ ἐξεζήτησα ἐκ νεότητός μου καὶ ἐζήτησα νύμφην ἀγαγέσθαι ἐμαυτῷ καὶ ἐραστὴς ἐγενόμην τοῦ κάλλους αὐτῆς

3She glorifies her noble birth by living with God, And the Master of all loves her.

εὐγένειαν δοξάζει συμβίωσιν θεοῦ ἔχουσα καὶ ὁ πάντων δεσπότης ἠγάπησεν αὐτήν

4For she is the initiate of the knowledge of God And one who chooses His works.

μύστις γάρ ἐστιν τῆς τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπιστήμης καὶ αἱρετὶς τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ

5Now if riches are a possession to be desired in life, What is richer than wisdom, who works all things?

εἰ δὲ πλοῦτός ἐστιν ἐπιθυμητὸν κτῆμα ἐν βίῳ τί σοφίας πλουσιώτερον τῆς τὰ πάντα ἐργαζομένης

6And if discernment shows itself in action, Who more than wisdom is its craftsman?

εἰ δὲ φρόνησις ἐργάζεται τίς αὐτῆς τῶν ὄντων μᾶλλόν ἐστιν τεχνῖτις

7If anyone loves righteousness, The products of righteousness are the virtues. For wisdom teaches self-control, discernment, righteousness and courage, Concerning which things there is nothing more valuable in the life of man.

καὶ εἰ δικαιοσύνην ἀγαπᾷ τις οἱ πόνοι ταύτης εἰσὶν ἀρεταί σωφροσύνην γὰρ καὶ φρόνησιν ἐκδιδάσκει δικαιοσύνην καὶ ἀνδρείαν ὧν χρησιμώτερον οὐδέν ἐστιν ἐν βίῳ ἀνθρώποις

8But also, if anyone longs for great experience, She knows the things of old and portrays the things to come; She understands subtlety of words and the solution of riddles; She has foreknowledge of signs and wonders And the outcomes of times and seasons.

εἰ δὲ καὶ πολυπειρίαν ποθεῖ τις οἶδεν τὰ ἀρχαῖα καὶ τὰ μέλλοντα εἰκάζει ἐπίσταται στροφὰς λόγων καὶ λύσεις αἰνιγμάτων σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα προγινώσκει καὶ ἐκβάσεις καιρῶν καὶ χρόνων

9Therefore I decided to take her to live with me, Knowing she would give me good counsel And encouragement in cares and sorrows.

ἔκρινα τοίνυν ταύτην ἀγαγέσθαι πρὸς συμβίωσιν εἰδὼς ὅτι ἔσται μοι σύμβουλος ἀγαθῶν καὶ παραίνεσις φροντίδων καὶ λύπης

10Because of her I will have glory among the multitudes And honor in the presence of the elders, though I am young.

ἕξω δι᾿ αὐτὴν δόξαν ἐν ὄχλοις καὶ τιμὴν παρὰ πρεσβυτέροις ὁ νέος

11I will be found keen in judgment And be admired in the sight of rulers.

ὀξὺς εὑρεθήσομαι ἐν κρίσει καὶ ἐν ὄψει δυναστῶν θαυμασθήσομαι

12When I am silent, they will wait for me, And when I speak, they will give heed to me; And when I speak longer, They will put their hand over their mouth.

σιγῶντά με περιμενοῦσιν καὶ φθεγγομένῳ προσέξουσιν καὶ λαλοῦντος ἐπὶ πλεῖον χεῖρα ἐπιθήσουσιν ἐπὶ στόμα αὐτῶν

13I will have immortality because of her And will leave an eternal remembrance For those who exist after me.

ἕξω δι᾿ αὐτὴν ἀθανασίαν καὶ μνήμην αἰώνιον τοῖς μετ᾿ ἐμὲ ἀπολείψω

14I shall govern peoples, And nations will be subject to me.

διοικήσω λαούς καὶ ἔθνη ὑποταγήσεταί μοι

15Dread tyrants shall be afraid of me when they hear of me; Among the people I will show myself To be good and courageous in war.

φοβηθήσονταί με ἀκούσαντες τύραννοι φρικτοί ἐν πλήθει φανοῦμαι ἀγαθὸς καὶ ἐν πολέμῳ ἀνδρεῖος

16When I enter my house, I shall find rest with her, For association with her has no bitterness, Neither does living with her have any sorrow, But only gladness and joy.

εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου προσαναπαύσομαι αὐτῇ οὐ γὰρ ἔχει πικρίαν ἡ συναναστροφὴ αὐτῆς οὐδὲ ὀδύνην ἡ συμβίωσις αὐτῆς ἀλλὰ εὐφροσύνην καὶ χαράν

17When I considered these things within myself And thought about them in my heart, That in kinship with wisdom there is immortality,

ταῦτα λογισάμενος ἐν ἐμαυτῷ καὶ φροντίσας ἐν καρδίᾳ μου ὅτι ἀθανασία ἐστὶν ἐν συγγενείᾳ σοφίας

18And in friendship with her there is good pleasure, And in the labors of her hands there is unfailing wealth, And in the shared training of her company there is discernment, And in the fellowship of her words there is good repute— Thus I searched about that I might take her for myself.

καὶ ἐν φιλίᾳ αὐτῆς τέρψις ἀγαθὴ καὶ ἐν πόνοις χειρῶν αὐτῆς πλοῦτος ἀνεκλιπὴς καὶ ἐν συγγυμνασίᾳ ὁμιλίας αὐτῆς φρόνησις καὶ εὔκλεια ἐν κοινωνίᾳ λόγων αὐτῆς περιῄειν ζητῶν ὅπως λάβω αὐτὴν εἰς ἐμαυτόν

19As a child I was good by nature and received a good soul;

παῖς δὲ ἤμην εὐφυὴς ψυχῆς τε ἔλαχον ἀγαθῆς

20And much more, since I was good, I entered an undefiled body.

μᾶλλον δὲ ἀγαθὸς ὢν ἦλθον εἰς σῶμα ἀμίαντον

21Yet I knew otherwise that I would not be self-controlled Unless God gave me wisdom, And that it was a mark of discernment To know whose gift she was— So I entreated the Lord and besought Him, And with all my heart, I said:

γνοὺς δὲ ὅτι οὐκ ἄλλως ἔσομαι ἐγκρατής ἐὰν μὴ ὁ θεὸς δῷ καὶ τοῦτο δ᾿ ἦν φρονήσεως τὸ εἰδέναι τίνος ἡ χάρις ἐνέτυχον τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ ἐδεήθην αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπον ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας μου
