Wisdom of Solomon 19

1But unmerciful anger came upon the ungodly to the end, For God knew of them and their future beforehand,

τοῖς δὲ ἀσεβέσιν μέχρι τέλους ἀνελεήμων θυμὸς ἐπέστη προῄδει γὰρ αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ μέλλοντα

2That they would allow Your people to depart And eagerly send them forth, But then change their minds and pursue them.

ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐπιτρέψαντες τοῦ ἀπιέναι καὶ μετὰ σπουδῆς προπέμψαντες αὐτοὺς διώξουσιν μεταμεληθέντες

3For while they were yet mourning And lamenting at the graves of their dead, They made another foolish decision And pursued as fugitives Those whom they had begged and had sent away.

ἔτι γὰρ ἐν χερσὶν ἔχοντες τὰ πένθη καὶ προσοδυρόμενοι τάφοις νεκρῶν ἕτερον ἐπεσπάσαντο λογισμὸν ἀνοίας καὶ οὓς ἱκετεύοντες ἐξέβαλον τούτους ὡς φυγάδας ἐδίωκον

4For a deserved destiny drew them to this end And made them forget what had happened, So they might fill up the punishment Which was lacking in their torments,

εἷλκεν γὰρ αὐτοὺς ἡ ἀξία ἐπὶ τοῦτο τὸ πέρας ἀνάγκη καὶ τῶν συμβεβηκότων ἀμνηστίαν ἐνέβαλεν ἵνα τὴν λείπουσαν ταῖς βασάνοις προσαναπληρώσωσιν κόλασιν

5And that Your people might attempt an incredible journey, But that they themselves might come upon a strange death.

καὶ ὁ μὲν λαός σου παράδοξον ὁδοιπορίαν πειράσῃ ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ξένον εὕρωσι θάνατον

6For the whole creation in its kind was fashioned again from above To serve Your commands, That Your servants might be kept unharmed.

ὅλη γὰρ ἡ κτίσις ἐν ἰδίῳ γένει πάλιν ἄνωθεν διετυποῦτο ὑπηρετοῦσα ταῖς σαῖς ἐπιταγαῖς ἵνα οἱ σοὶ παῖδες φυλαχθῶσιν ἀβλαβεῖς

7The cloud was seen overshadowing the camp And the emerging of dry land out of the water previously present, An unhindered way out of the Red Sea And a grassy plain out of the violence of rough water,

ἡ τὴν παρεμβολὴν σκιάζουσα νεφέλη ἐκ δὲ προϋφεστῶτος ὕδατος ξηρᾶς ἀνάδυσις γῆς ἐθεωρήθη ἐξ ἐρυθρᾶς θαλάσσης ὁδὸς ἀνεμπόδιστος καὶ χλοηφόρον πεδίον ἐκ κλύδωνος βιαίου

8Through which those sheltered by Your hand Passed with the whole nation After observing marvelous wonders.

δι᾿ οὗ πανεθνεὶ διῆλθον οἱ τῇ σῇ σκεπαζόμενοι χειρὶ θεωρήσαντες θαυμαστὰ τέρατα

9For they grazed like horses And leaped about like lambs, Praising You, O Lord, who saved them.

ὡς γὰρ ἵπποι ἐνεμήθησαν καὶ ὡς ἀμνοὶ διεσκίρτησαν αἰνοῦντές σε κύριε τὸν ῥυσάμενον αὐτούς

10For they still remembered their sojourn in a foreign land, How instead of the birth of animals the land brought forth small flies, And instead of things living in water The river vomited forth a multitude of frogs.

ἐμέμνηντο γὰρ ἔτι τῶν ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ αὐτῶν πῶς ἀντὶ μὲν γενέσεως ζῴων ἐξήγαγεν ἡ γῆ σκνῖπα ἀντὶ δὲ ἐνύδρων ἐξηρεύξατο ὁ ποταμὸς πλῆθος βατράχων

11Afterwards they also saw a new kind of birds, When led by their passion they requested meats for self-indulgence;

ἐφ᾿ ὑστέρῳ δὲ εἶδον καὶ γένεσιν νέαν ὀρνέων ὅτε ἐπιθυμίᾳ προαχθέντες ᾐτήσαντο ἐδέσματα τρυφῆς

12For their relief, quails came up from the sea.

εἰς γὰρ παραμυθίαν ἐκ θαλάσσης ἀνέβη αὐτοῖς ὀρτυγομήτρα

13The punishments did not come upon the sinners Without previous signs in the violence of thunder, And they suffered justly because of their own evils; For they practiced a very bitter hatred of strangers.

καὶ αἱ τιμωρίαι τοῖς ἁμαρτωλοῖς ἐπῆλθον οὐκ ἄνευ τῶν προγεγονότων τεκμηρίων τῇ βίᾳ τῶν κεραυνῶν δικαίως γὰρ ἔπασχον ταῖς ἰδίαις αὐτῶν πονηρίαις καὶ γὰρ χαλεπωτέραν μισοξενίαν ἐπετήδευσαν

14Others did not welcome those unknown to them when they arrived, But these enslaved foreign benefactors.

οἱ μὲν γὰρ τοὺς ἀγνοοῦντας οὐκ ἐδέχοντο παρόντας οὗτοι δὲ εὐεργέτας ξένους ἐδουλοῦντο

15And not only this, but there shall be a certain visitation Because they received foreigners hatefully;

καὶ οὐ μόνον ἀλλ᾿ ἤ τις ἐπισκοπὴ ἔσται αὐτῶν ἐπεὶ ἀπεχθῶς προσεδέχοντο τοὺς ἀλλοτρίους

16For after receiving them with festivals, They mistreated with terrible sufferings Those who had already shared the same rights.

οἱ δὲ μετὰ ἑορτασμάτων εἰσδεξάμενοι τοὺς ἤδη τῶν αὐτῶν μετεσχηκότας δικαίων δεινοῖς ἐκάκωσαν πόνοις

17They were also stricken with blindness Like those at the doors of the righteous man, When, clothed in darkness, each sought the way through his own doors.

ἐπλήγησαν δὲ καὶ ἀορασίᾳ ὥσπερ ἐκεῖνοι ἐπὶ ταῖς τοῦ δικαίου θύραις ὅτε ἀχανεῖ περιβληθέντες σκότει ἕκαστος τῶν ἑαυτοῦ θυρῶν τὴν δίοδον ἐζήτει

18For the elements combined among themselves in different ways, Which can be accurately conjectured from the sight of what took place, As on a harp the sounds of the rhythm differ in expression While always remaining the same in sound.

δι᾿ ἑαυτῶν γὰρ τὰ στοιχεῖα μεθαρμοζόμενα ὥσπερ ἐν ψαλτηρίῳ φθόγγοι τοῦ ῥυθμοῦ τὸ ὄνομα διαλλάσσουσιν πάντοτε μένοντα ἤχῳ ὅπερ ἐστὶν εἰκάσαι ἐκ τῆς τῶν γεγονότων ὄψεως ἀκριβῶς

19For land animals were changed into water creatures, And creatures that swim crossed over to the land.

χερσαῖα γὰρ εἰς ἔνυδρα μετεβάλλετο καὶ νηκτὰ μετέβαινεν ἐπὶ γῆς

20In water, fire prevailed with its own power, And water forgot its quenching properties.

πῦρ ἴσχυεν ἐν ὕδατι τῆς ἰδίας δυνάμεως καὶ ὕδωρ τῆς σβεστικῆς φύσεως ἐπελανθάνετο

21Flames, on the contrary, did not consume The flesh of perishable animals that walked among them, Nor was the species of immortal food capable of being melted Like easily melted ice.

φλόγες ἀνάπαλιν εὐφθάρτων ζῴων οὐκ ἐμάραναν σάρκας ἐμπεριπατούντων οὐδὲ τηκτὸν κρυσταλλοειδὲς εὔτηκτον γένος ἀμβροσίας τροφῆς

22For in everything, O Lord, You have exalted and glorified Your people, And have not neglected to be present with them in every time and place.

κατὰ πάντα γάρ κύριε ἐμεγάλυνας τὸν λαόν σου καὶ ἐδόξασας καὶ οὐχ ὑπερεῖδες ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ καὶ τόπῳ παριστάμενος
