Wisdom of Solomon 14

1Again, someone getting ready for a voyage And about to sail through wild waves Cries out loud to a piece of wood More fragile than the ship that carries him.

πλοῦν τις πάλιν στελλόμενος καὶ ἄγρια μέλλων διοδεύειν κύματα τοῦ φέροντος αὐτὸν πλοίου σαθρότερον ξύλον ἐπιβοᾶται

2For it was desire for gain that contrived that boat, And wisdom was the craftsman who built it;

ἐκεῖνο μὲν γὰρ ὄρεξις πορισμῶν ἐπενόησεν τεχνῖτις δὲ σοφία κατεσκεύασεν

3But Your providence, O Father, governs its course, Because You have given it a path in the sea And a safe track in the waves,

ἡ δὲ σή πάτερ διακυβερνᾷ πρόνοια ὅτι ἔδωκας καὶ ἐν θαλάσσῃ ὁδὸν καὶ ἐν κύμασι τρίβον ἀσφαλῆ

4Showing that You can save from every danger, And that even without skill one may embark upon the sea.

δεικνὺς ὅτι δύνασαι ἐκ παντὸς σῴζειν ἵνα κἂν ἄνευ τέχνης τις ἐπιβῇ

5For You do not will that the works of Your wisdom be useless; Therefore, men trust their lives even to the smallest piece of wood, And passing through the waves on a ship They are brought safely through.

θέλεις δὲ μὴ ἀργὰ εἶναι τὰ τῆς σοφίας σου ἔργα διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ἐλαχίστῳ ξύλῳ πιστεύουσιν ἄνθρωποι ψυχὰς καὶ διελθόντες κλύδωνα σχεδίᾳ διεσώθησαν

6For even in the beginning, when arrogant giants perished, The hope of the world took refuge in a boat, And piloted by Your hand it left to the world the seed of a family.

καὶ ἀρχῆς γὰρ ἀπολλυμένων ὑπερηφάνων γιγάντων ἡ ἐλπὶς τοῦ κόσμου ἐπὶ σχεδίας καταφυγοῦσα ἀπέλιπεν αἰῶνι σπέρμα γενέσεως τῇ σῇ κυβερνηθεῖσα χειρί

7For Your strength is the origin of righteousness, And it causes You who are the Lord of all to spare all.

εὐλόγηται γὰρ ξύλον δι᾿ οὗ γίνεται δικαιοσύνη

8But what was made by human hands itself is accursed, And so is he who made it—He because he made it, And the perishable thing because it was called a god.

τὸ χειροποίητον δέ ἐπικατάρατον αὐτὸ καὶ ὁ ποιήσας αὐτό ὅτι ὁ μὲν ἠργάζετο τὸ δὲ φθαρτὸν θεὸς ὠνομάσθη

9For equally hateful to God are the ungodly man and his ungodliness.

ἐν ἴσῳ γὰρ μισητὰ θεῷ καὶ ὁ ἀσεβῶν καὶ ἡ ἀσέβεια αὐτοῦ

10For what was done will be punished along with him who did it.

καὶ γὰρ τὸ πραχθὲν σὺν τῷ δράσαντι κολασθήσεται

11Therefore there shall also be a visitation upon the idols of the nations, Because, though the wood was part of God's creation, It was made into an abomination And became a stumbling-block for the souls of men And a trap for the feet of fools.

διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ἐν εἰδώλοις ἐθνῶν ἐπισκοπὴ ἔσται ὅτι ἐν κτίσματι θεοῦ εἰς βδέλυγμα ἐγενήθησαν καὶ εἰς σκάνδαλα ψυχαῖς ἀνθρώπων καὶ εἰς παγίδα ποσὶν ἀφρόνων

12For the invention of idols was the beginning of fornication, And the conception of them the corruption of life,

ἀρχὴ γὰρ πορνείας ἐπίνοια εἰδώλων εὕρεσις δὲ αὐτῶν φθορὰ ζωῆς

13For neither were they from the beginning Nor shall they be forever.

οὔτε γὰρ ἦν ἀπ᾿ ἀρχῆς οὔτε εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἔσται

14For by the vainglory of mankind they entered the world, And therefore their speedy end has been planned.

κενοδοξίᾳ γὰρ ἀνθρώπων εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον καὶ διὰ τοῦτο σύντομον αὐτῶν τὸ τέλος ἐπενοήθη

15For a father consumed with untimely grief When his child was soon taken from him Made an image of the once-dead human being And honored him now as a god, And handed down to those under him secret mysteries and initiations.

ἀώρῳ γὰρ πένθει τρυχόμενος πατὴρ τοῦ ταχέως ἀφαιρεθέντος τέκνου εἰκόνα ποιήσας τόν ποτε νεκρὸν ἄνθρωπον νῦν ὡς θεὸν ἐτίμησεν καὶ παρέδωκεν τοῖς ὑποχειρίοις μυστήρια καὶ τελετάς

16Then the ungodly custom, strengthened by time, was kept as a law, And at the command of tyrants carved images were worshiped.

εἶτα ἐν χρόνῳ κρατυνθὲν τὸ ἀσεβὲς ἔθος ὡς νόμος ἐφυλάχθη

17When men could not honor a tyrant before his face Because he lived far away, They imagined his face from a distance And made a visible image of the honored king, That by their zeal they might flatter the one absent as though present.

καὶ τυράννων ἐπιταγαῖς ἐθρησκεύετο τὰ γλυπτά οὓς ἐν ὄψει μὴ δυνάμενοι τιμᾶν ἄνθρωποι διὰ τὸ μακρὰν οἰκεῖν τὴν πόρρωθεν ὄψιν ἀνατυπωσάμενοι ἐμφανῆ εἰκόνα τοῦ τιμωμένου βασιλέως ἐποίησαν ἵνα ὡς παρόντα τὸν ἀπόντα κολακεύωσιν διὰ τῆς σπουδῆς

18Then the ambition of the craftsman encouraged Even those who did not know the king to increase their worship.

εἰς ἐπίτασιν δὲ θρησκείας καὶ τοὺς ἀγνοοῦντας ἡ τοῦ τεχνίτου προετρέψατο φιλοτιμία

19For wishing perhaps to please the one who ruled over him, He skillfully forced the likeness into a more beautiful form,

ὁ μὲν γὰρ τάχα κρατοῦντι βουλόμενος ἀρέσαι ἐξεβιάσατο τῇ τέχνῃ τὴν ὁμοιότητα ἐπὶ τὸ κάλλιον

20And the multitude, attracted by the popularity of his work, Now considered him as an object of worship Whom a short time before they honored as a man.

τὸ δὲ πλῆθος ἐφελκόμενον διὰ τὸ εὔχαρι τῆς ἐργασίας τὸν πρὸ ὀλίγου τιμηθέντα ἄνθρωπον νῦν σέβασμα ἐλογίσαντο

21But this became a trap for their life, Because men, in bondage either to calamity or to kingly power, Conferred on stones and wood a name not shared with another.

καὶ τοῦτο ἐγένετο τῷ βίῳ εἰς ἔνεδρον ὅτι ἢ συμφορᾷ ἢ τυραννίδι δουλεύσαντες ἄνθρωποι τὸ ἀκοινώνητον ὄνομα λίθοις καὶ ξύλοις περιέθεσαν

22Furthermore, it was not enough for them To be deceived about the knowledge of God, But they live in a great conflict of ignorance, And they call such evils peace.

εἶτ᾿ οὐκ ἤρκεσεν τὸ πλανᾶσθαι περὶ τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ γνῶσιν ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν μεγάλῳ ζῶντες ἀγνοίας πολέμῳ τὰ τοσαῦτα κακὰ εἰρήνην προσαγορεύουσιν

23For they either hold child-murdering rites of initiation, Or celebrate secret mysteries, Or engage in the frantic revelry of special customs.

ἢ γὰρ τεκνοφόνους τελετὰς ἢ κρύφια μυστήρια ἢ ἐμμανεῖς ἐξάλλων θεσμῶν κώμους ἄγοντες

24Moreover, they keep neither life nor marriages pure, But one either kills another in ambush, Or one causes another grief when he corrupts his marriage.

οὔτε βίους οὔτε γάμους καθαροὺς ἔτι φυλάσσουσιν ἕτερος δ᾿ ἕτερον ἢ λοχῶν ἀναιρεῖ ἢ νοθεύων ὀδυνᾷ

25Everything is mixed together: Blood and murder, theft and treachery, Depravity, unfaithfulness, tumult, perjury,

πάντα δ᾿ ἐπιμὶξ ἔχει αἷμα καὶ φόνος κλοπὴ καὶ δόλος φθορά ἀπιστία τάραχος ἐπιορκία

26Confusion over what is good, ingratitude, corruption of family, Breakup of marriages, disorder, adultery, and debauchery.

θόρυβος ἀγαθῶν χάριτος ἀμνηστία ψυχῶν μιασμός γενέσεως ἐναλλαγή γάμων ἀταξία μοιχεία καὶ ἀσέλγεια

27For the worship of idols not to be named Is the beginning, cause, and end of every evil.

ἡ γὰρ τῶν ἀνωνύμων εἰδώλων θρησκεία παντὸς ἀρχὴ κακοῦ καὶ αἰτία καὶ πέρας ἐστίν

28For either they are driven to a frenzy in their celebrations, Or prophesy lies, Or live unrighteously, or readily swear falsely;

ἢ γὰρ εὐφραινόμενοι μεμήνασιν ἢ προφητεύουσιν ψευδῆ ἢ ζῶσιν ἀδίκως ἢ ἐπιορκοῦσιν ταχέως

29For since they trust in lifeless idols, They swear with wrong motives and expect to suffer no harm.

ἀψύχοις γὰρ πεποιθότες εἰδώλοις κακῶς ὀμόσαντες ἀδικηθῆναι οὐ προσδέχονται

30But justice will catch up with them on two counts: Because they thought wrongly about God in their devotion to idols, And by treating holiness with contempt They swore unjustly in deceit.

ἀμφότερα δὲ αὐτοὺς μετελεύσεται τὰ δίκαια ὅτι κακῶς ἐφρόνησαν περὶ θεοῦ προσέχοντες εἰδώλοις καὶ ἀδίκως ὤμοσαν ἐν δόλῳ καταφρονήσαντες ὁσιότητος

31For it is not the power of making oaths, But the punishment of those who sin That always prosecutes the transgression of the unrighteous.

οὐ γὰρ ἡ τῶν ὀμνυμένων δύναμις ἀλλ᾿ ἡ τῶν ἁμαρτανόντων δίκη ἐπεξέρχεται ἀεὶ τὴν τῶν ἀδίκων παράβασιν
