Wisdom of Solomon 13

1For all men while ignorant of God were useless in their condition. So from the good things that are seen They were unable to know Him who exists, Nor did they know the Craftsman by paying attention to His works.

μάταιοι μὲν γὰρ πάντες ἄνθρωποι φύσει οἷς παρῆν θεοῦ ἀγνωσία καὶ ἐκ τῶν ὁρωμένων ἀγαθῶν οὐκ ἴσχυσαν εἰδέναι τὸν ὄντα οὔτε τοῖς ἔργοις προσέχοντες ἐπέγνωσαν τὸν τεχνίτην

2But they supposed that the gods who rule the world Were either fire or wind or swift air, Or the circle of the stars or violent water or the luminaries of heaven.

ἀλλ᾿ ἢ πῦρ ἢ πνεῦμα ἢ ταχινὸν ἀέρα ἢ κύκλον ἄστρων ἢ βίαιον ὕδωρ ἢ φωστῆρας οὐρανοῦ πρυτάνεις κόσμου θεοὺς ἐνόμισαν

3If while delighting in their beauty men assumed them to be gods, Let them know how much better than these things is their Lord, For the Creator of beauty created them;

ὧν εἰ μὲν τῇ καλλονῇ τερπόμενοι ταῦτα θεοὺς ὑπελάμβανον γνώτωσαν πόσῳ τούτων ὁ δεσπότης ἐστὶ βελτίων ὁ γὰρ τοῦ κάλλους γενεσιάρχης ἔκτισεν αὐτά

4And if they were amazed at their power and working, Let them understand from them How much more powerful than these is He who made them.

εἰ δὲ δύναμιν καὶ ἐνέργειαν ἐκπλαγέντες νοησάτωσαν ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν πόσῳ ὁ κατασκευάσας αὐτὰ δυνατώτερός ἐστιν

5For from the greatness and beauty of created things The Creator is seen by analogy.

ἐκ γὰρ μεγέθους καὶ καλλονῆς κτισμάτων ἀναλόγως ὁ γενεσιουργὸς αὐτῶν θεωρεῖται

6Nevertheless there is little reason for complaint against them, For perhaps they go astray while seeking God and wish to find Him.

ἀλλ᾿ ὅμως ἐπὶ τούτοις μέμψις ἐστὶν ὀλίγη καὶ γὰρ αὐτοὶ τάχα πλανῶνται θεὸν ζητοῦντες καὶ θέλοντες εὑρεῖν

7For as they live among His works, they examine them closely And are persuaded by what they see, Because the things they see are beautiful.

ἐν γὰρ τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ ἀναστρεφόμενοι διερευνῶσιν καὶ πείθονται τῇ ὄψει ὅτι καλὰ τὰ βλεπόμενα

8However, they are not to be excused.

πάλιν δ᾿ οὐδ᾿ αὐτοὶ συγγνωστοί

9For if they were able to know so much With their ability to investigate the world, How is it possible they did not quickly find The Lord of all these things?

εἰ γὰρ τοσοῦτον ἴσχυσαν εἰδέναι ἵνα δύνωνται στοχάσασθαι τὸν αἰῶνα τὸν τούτων δεσπότην πῶς τάχιον οὐχ εὗρον

10But they are miserable, and so are their hopes in dead things, Those who call "gods" the works of men's hands, Gold, silver, and the practice of craftsmanship, And the likeness of animals, Or a worthless stone of an ancient hand.

ταλαίπωροι δὲ καὶ ἐν νεκροῖς αἱ ἐλπίδες αὐτῶν οἵτινες ἐκάλεσαν θεοὺς ἔργα χειρῶν ἀνθρώπων χρυσὸν καὶ ἄργυρον τέχνης ἐμμελέτημα καὶ ἀπεικάσματα ζῴων ἢ λίθον ἄχρηστον χειρὸς ἔργον ἀρχαίας

11But also, if some carpenter saws down an easily moved tree And skillfully scrapes away all its bark, He then builds a useful vessel beautifully made by his skill For the service of the living,

εἰ δὲ καί τις ὑλοτόμος τέκτων εὐκίνητον φυτὸν ἐκπρίσας περιέξυσεν εὐμαθῶς πάντα τὸν φλοιὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ τεχνησάμενος εὐπρεπῶς κατεσκεύασεν χρήσιμον σκεῦος εἰς ὑπηρεσίαν ζωῆς

12And uses up the cast-off pieces of his trade To prepare his food and be filled.

τὰ δὲ ἀποβλήματα τῆς ἐργασίας εἰς ἑτοιμασίαν τροφῆς ἀναλώσας ἐνεπλήσθη

13But a cast-off piece from among them, useful for nothing, That grew up with the tree, crooked and full of knots, He takes and carves with care in his leisure And forms it with intelligent skill, And models it in the likeness of a man.

τὸ δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀπόβλημα εἰς οὐθὲν εὔχρηστον ξύλον σκολιὸν καὶ ὄζοις συμπεφυκός λαβὼν ἔγλυψεν ἐν ἐπιμελείᾳ ἀργίας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπειρίᾳ συνέσεως ἐτύπωσεν αὐτό ἀπείκασεν αὐτὸ εἰκόνι ἀνθρώπου

14Or he likens it to some worthless animal And smears it with bright red paint, Making its surface red, Covering every blemish in it with paint.

ἢ ζῴῳ τινὶ εὐτελεῖ ὡμοίωσεν αὐτὸ καταχρίσας μίλτῳ καὶ φύκει ἐρυθήνας χρόαν αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσαν κηλῖδα τὴν ἐν αὐτῷ καταχρίσας

15Then he makes a room fitting for it And puts it on a wall and fastens it with iron nails That it may not fall.

καὶ ποιήσας αὐτῷ αὐτοῦ ἄξιον οἴκημα ἐν τοίχῳ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸ ἀσφαλισάμενος σιδήρῳ

16He takes care of it, knowing that it cannot help itself; For it is an image that has need of help.

ἵνα μὲν οὖν μὴ καταπέσῃ προενόησεν αὐτοῦ εἰδὼς ὅτι ἀδυνατεῖ ἑαυτῷ βοηθῆσαι καὶ γάρ ἐστιν εἰκὼν καὶ χρείαν ἔχει βοηθείας

17When he prays about his possessions, His marriage and his children, He is not ashamed to speak to a lifeless thing, And he appeals to a weak thing concerning his health.

περὶ δὲ κτημάτων καὶ γάμων αὐτοῦ καὶ τέκνων προσευχόμενος οὐκ αἰσχύνεται τῷ ἀψύχῳ προσλαλῶν καὶ περὶ μὲν ὑγιείας τὸ ἀσθενὲς ἐπικαλεῖται

18Concerning life he prays to something dead; Concerning aid he supplicates something ignorant; And concerning a journey, something that cannot take a step;

περὶ δὲ ζωῆς τὸ νεκρὸν ἀξιοῖ περὶ δὲ ἐπικουρίας τὸ ἀπειρότατον ἱκετεύει περὶ δὲ ὁδοιπορίας τὸ μηδὲ βάσει χρῆσθαι δυνάμενον

19Concerning means of livelihood, Profit and success with his hands; He requests bodily strength From something powerless with its hands.

περὶ δὲ πορισμοῦ καὶ ἐργασίας καὶ χειρῶν ἐπιτυχίας τὸ ἀδρανέστατον ταῖς χερσὶν εὐδράνειαν αἰτεῖται
