Wisdom of Solomon 18

1Their enemies heard their voice but did not see their form; And they considered them blessed because they had also not suffered,

τοῖς δὲ ὁσίοις σου μέγιστον ἦν φῶς ὧν φωνὴν μὲν ἀκούοντες μορφὴν δὲ οὐχ ὁρῶντες ὅτι μὲν οὐ κἀκεῖνοι ἐπεπόνθεισαν ἐμακάριζον

2For Your holy ones did not harm those Who previously wronged them. So they were thankful and begged for grace For being at variance with them.

ὅτι δ᾿ οὐ βλάπτουσιν προηδικημένοι ηὐχαρίστουν καὶ τοῦ διενεχθῆναι χάριν ἐδέοντο

3Therefore You provided a flaming pillar of fire As a guide for their unknown journey, And a harmless sun for their glorious exile.

ἀνθ᾿ ὧν πυριφλεγῆ στῦλον ὁδηγὸν μὲν ἀγνώστου ὁδοιπορίας ἥλιον δὲ ἀβλαβῆ φιλοτίμου ξενιτείας παρέσχες

4For their enemies deserved to be deprived of light And imprisoned in darkness, Those who imprisoned Your children, Through whom the incorruptible light of the law Was to be given to the world.

ἄξιοι μὲν γὰρ ἐκεῖνοι στερηθῆναι φωτὸς καὶ φυλακισθῆναι σκότει οἱ κατακλείστους φυλάξαντες τοὺς υἱούς σου δι᾿ ὧν ἤμελλεν τὸ ἄφθαρτον νόμου φῶς τῷ αἰῶνι δίδοσθαι

5When they resolved to kill the babes of Your holy ones And one child was exposed and rescued, You took away as a rebuke a multitude of their children; And You destroyed them together in the violent water.

βουλευσαμένους δ᾿ αὐτοὺς τὰ τῶν ὁσίων ἀποκτεῖναι νήπια καὶ ἑνὸς ἐκτεθέντος τέκνου καὶ σωθέντος εἰς ἔλεγχον τὸ αὐτῶν ἀφείλω πλῆθος τέκνων καὶ ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἀπώλεσας ἐν ὕδατι σφοδρῷ

6That night was made known beforehand to our fathers So they might rejoice with sure knowledge in the oaths they trusted.

ἐκείνη ἡ νὺξ προεγνώσθη πατράσιν ἡμῶν ἵνα ἀσφαλῶς εἰδότες οἷς ἐπίστευσαν ὅρκοις ἐπευθυμήσωσιν

7The salvation of the righteous and the destruction of enemies Were expected by Your people,

προσεδέχθη ὑπὸ λαοῦ σου σωτηρία μὲν δικαίων ἐχθρῶν δὲ ἀπώλεια

8For You punished our enemies with the same means By which You called and glorified us.

ᾧ γὰρ ἐτιμωρήσω τοὺς ὑπεναντίους τούτῳ ἡμᾶς προσκαλεσάμενος ἐδόξασας

9For in secret the holy children of good people offered sacrifices, And in harmony with the divine law made a covenant, That the saints would share alike in good things and in dangers; And already they were singing the praises of their fathers.

κρυφῇ γὰρ ἐθυσίαζον ὅσιοι παῖδες ἀγαθῶν καὶ τὸν τῆς θειότητος νόμον ἐν ὁμονοίᾳ διέθεντο τῶν αὐτῶν ὁμοίως καὶ ἀγαθῶν καὶ κινδύνων μεταλήμψεσθαι τοὺς ἁγίους πατέρων ἤδη προαναμέλποντες αἴνους

10But the discordant cry of their enemies resounded, And their pitiful outcry and mourning for their children spread abroad.

ἀντήχει δ᾿ ἀσύμφωνος ἐχθρῶν ἡ βοή καὶ οἰκτρὰ διεφέρετο φωνὴ θρηνουμένων παίδων

11The servant was punished with the same penalty as the master, And the common man suffered the same thing as the king.

ὁμοίᾳ δὲ δίκῃ δοῦλος ἅμα δεσπότῃ κολασθεὶς καὶ δημότης βασιλεῖ τὰ αὐτὰ πάσχων

12They all together by the one name of death Had innumerable dead persons, For there were not enough living even to bury them; Because in one critical moment their valued children were destroyed.

ὁμοθυμαδὸν δὲ πάντες ἐν ἑνὶ ὀνόματι θανάτου νεκροὺς εἶχον ἀναριθμήτους οὐδὲ γὰρ πρὸς τὸ θάψαι οἱ ζῶντες ἦσαν ἱκανοί ἐπεὶ πρὸς μίαν ῥοπὴν ἡ ἐντιμοτέρα γένεσις αὐτῶν διέφθαρτο

13For they disbelieved everything because of their sorceries, But at the destruction of their firstborn, They acknowledged the people to be God's son.

πάντα γὰρ ἀπιστοῦντες διὰ τὰς φαρμακείας ἐπὶ τῷ τῶν πρωτοτόκων ὀλέθρῳ ὡμολόγησαν θεοῦ υἱὸν λαὸν εἶναι

14For while gentle silence embraced everything And night at its own speed was half over,

ἡσύχου γὰρ σιγῆς περιεχούσης τὰ πάντα καὶ νυκτὸς ἐν ἰδίῳ τάχει μεσαζούσης

15Your all-powerful Word leaped from heaven, from the royal throne, Into the midst of a doomed land, A relentless warrior carrying the sharp sword Of Your irrevocable command,

ὁ παντοδύναμός σου λόγος ἀπ᾿ οὐρανῶν ἐκ θρόνων βασιλείων ἀπότομος πολεμιστὴς εἰς μέσον τῆς ὀλεθρίας ἥλατο γῆς ξίφος ὀξὺ τὴν ἀνυπόκριτον ἐπιταγήν σου φέρων

16And He stood and filled all things with death And touched heaven while standing on earth.

καὶ στὰς ἐπλήρωσεν τὰ πάντα θανάτου καὶ οὐρανοῦ μὲν ἥπτετο βεβήκει δ᾿ ἐπὶ γῆς

17Then immediately apparitions in terrifying dreams troubled them, And unexpected fears set upon them,

τότε παραχρῆμα φαντασίαι μὲν ὀνείρων δεινῶν ἐξετάραξαν αὐτούς φόβοι δὲ ἐπέστησαν ἀδόκητοι

18And they threw themselves to the ground half-dead, One apparition here and another there, To make known to them the reason they were dying.

καὶ ἄλλος ἀλλαχῇ ῥιφεὶς ἡμίθνητος δι᾿ ἣν ἔθνῃσκον αἰτίαν ἐνεφάνιζεν

19For the dreams which disturbed them revealed this beforehand, So they might not die without understanding Why it was they suffered.

οἱ γὰρ ὄνειροι θορυβήσαντες αὐτοὺς τοῦτο προεμήνυσαν ἵνα μὴ ἀγνοοῦντες δι᾿ ὃ κακῶς πάσχουσιν ἀπόλωνται

20The experience of death also touched the righteous, And a plague came upon the multitude in the desert; But the wrath did not last long.

ἥψατο δὲ καὶ δικαίων πεῖρα θανάτου καὶ θραῦσις ἐν ἐρήμῳ ἐγένετο πλήθους ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ ἐπὶ πολὺ ἔμεινεν ἡ ὀργή

21For a blameless man hastened and acted as their champion. He carried the instrument of his ministry: Prayer and the atonement of incense, And withstood the anger and put an end to the calamity, Showing that he was Your servant.

σπεύσας γὰρ ἀνὴρ ἄμεμπτος προεμάχησεν τὸ τῆς ἰδίας λειτουργίας ὅπλον προσευχὴν καὶ θυμιάματος ἐξιλασμὸν κομίσας ἀντέστη τῷ θυμῷ καὶ πέρας ἐπέθηκε τῇ συμφορᾷ δεικνὺς ὅτι σός ἐστιν θεράπων

22He conquered the wrath not by strength of body, And not by the power of weapons, But by a word he subdued the punisher, Because he remembered the oaths and covenants of the fathers.

ἐνίκησεν δὲ τὸν χόλον οὐκ ἰσχύι τοῦ σώματος οὐχ ὅπλων ἐνεργείᾳ ἀλλὰ λόγῳ τὸν κολάζοντα ὑπέταξεν ὅρκους πατέρων καὶ διαθήκας ὑπομνήσας

23For when the dead had already fallen on one another in heaps, He stood in the midst and drove back the wrath And cut off its path to the living.

σωρηδὸν γὰρ ἤδη πεπτωκότων ἐπ᾿ ἀλλήλων νεκρῶν μεταξὺ στὰς ἀνέκοψε τὴν ὀργὴν καὶ διέσχισεν τὴν πρὸς τοὺς ζῶντας ὁδόν

24For the whole world was on his long robe, And the glories of the fathers were a carved work Arranged in four rows of stones; And Your majesty was on the diadem on his head.

ἐπὶ γὰρ ποδήρους ἐνδύματος ἦν ὅλος ὁ κόσμος καὶ πατέρων δόξαι ἐπὶ τετραστίχου λίθων γλυφῆς καὶ μεγαλωσύνη σου ἐπὶ διαδήματος κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ

25To these the destroyer yielded And these he feared; For the trial of his wrath alone was enough.

τούτοις εἶξεν ὁ ὀλεθρεύων ταῦτα δὲ ἐφοβήθη ἦν γὰρ μόνη ἡ πεῖρα τῆς ὀργῆς ἱκανή
