Wisdom of Solomon 12

1For Your immortal Spirit is in all things.

τὸ γὰρ ἄφθαρτόν σου πνεῦμά ἐστιν ἐν πᾶσιν

2For this reason You correct little by little those who fall away, And You remind and warn them of the sins they commit So they may be freed from evil and believe in You, O Lord.

διὸ τοὺς παραπίπτοντας κατ᾿ ὀλίγον ἐλέγχεις καὶ ἐν οἷς ἁμαρτάνουσιν ὑπομιμνῄσκων νουθετεῖς ἵνα ἀπαλλαγέντες τῆς κακίας πιστεύσωσιν ἐπὶ σέ κύριε

3For You hated the inhabitants of Your holy land long ago,

καὶ γὰρ τοὺς πάλαι οἰκήτορας τῆς ἁγίας σου γῆς

4Because they practiced very hateful works of sorcery and unholy rites.

μισήσας ἐπὶ τῷ ἔχθιστα πράσσειν ἔργα φαρμακειῶν καὶ τελετὰς ἀνοσίους

5These unmerciful murderers of children Who ate sacrificial meals of human flesh and blood, These initiates in the midst of an orgy,

τέκνων τε φονὰς ἀνελεήμονας καὶ σπλαγχνοφάγον ἀνθρωπίνων σαρκῶν θοῖναν καὶ αἵματος ἐκ μέσου μύστας θιάσου

6These parents and murderers of helpless children— You willed to destroy by the hands of our fathers,

καὶ αὐθέντας γονεῖς ψυχῶν ἀβοηθήτων ἐβουλήθης ἀπολέσαι διὰ χειρῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν

7That the land most precious of all to You Might be a worthy colony of the servants of God.

ἵνα ἀξίαν ἀποικίαν δέξηται θεοῦ παίδων ἡ παρὰ σοὶ πασῶν τιμιωτάτη γῆ

8But even these You spared, since they were men, And sent wasps as forerunners of Your army That You might destroy them little by little.

ἀλλὰ καὶ τούτων ὡς ἀνθρώπων ἐφείσω ἀπέστειλάς τε προδρόμους τοῦ στρατοπέδου σου σφῆκας ἵνα αὐτοὺς κατὰ βραχὺ ἐξολεθρεύσωσιν

9You were not powerless to give the ungodly To the righteous in regular battle, Or to destroy them by terrible wild beasts Or by one severe word;

οὐκ ἀδυνατῶν ἐν παρατάξει ἀσεβεῖς δικαίοις ὑποχειρίους δοῦναι ἢ θηρίοις δεινοῖς ἢ λόγῳ ἀποτόμῳ ὑφ᾿ ἓν ἐκτρῖψαι

10But judging them little by little You gave them a chance for repentance, For You were not unaware that their generation was evil, Their vice implanted, And their reasoning would not change forever.

κρίνων δὲ κατὰ βραχὺ ἐδίδους τόπον μετανοίας οὐκ ἀγνοῶν ὅτι πονηρὰ ἡ γένεσις αὐτῶν καὶ ἔμφυτος ἡ κακία αὐτῶν καὶ ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἀλλαγῇ ὁ λογισμὸς αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

11For they were an accursed seed from the beginning, Nor did You give them amnesty for their sins Because You feared any one.

σπέρμα γὰρ ἦν κατηραμένον ἀπ᾿ ἀρχῆς οὐδὲ εὐλαβούμενός τινα ἐφ᾿ οἷς ἡμάρτανον ἄδειαν ἐδίδους

12For who will say, “What have You done?” Or who will oppose Your judgment? Who will bring a charge against You For destroying the nations You made? Or who will stand before You To plead as an advocate for unrighteous men?

τίς γὰρ ἐρεῖ τί ἐποίησας ἢ τίς ἀντιστήσεται τῷ κρίματί σου τίς δὲ ἐγκαλέσει σοι κατὰ ἐθνῶν ἀπολωλότων ἃ σὺ ἐποίησας ἢ τίς εἰς κατάστασίν σοι ἐλεύσεται ἔκδικος κατὰ ἀδίκων ἀνθρώπων

13For neither is there any god except You, Whose care is for all things, So You may show that You do not judge unjustly;

οὔτε γὰρ θεός ἐστιν πλὴν σοῦ ᾧ μέλει περὶ πάντων ἵνα δείξῃς ὅτι οὐκ ἀδίκως ἔκρινας

14Nor can any king or tyrant meet You face to face Concerning those You punish.

οὔτε βασιλεὺς ἢ τύραννος ἀντοφθαλμῆσαι δυνήσεταί σοι περὶ ὧν ἐκόλασας

15You are righteous and order all things uprightly, And You consider it alien to Your power To pass sentence on him who should not be punished.

δίκαιος δὲ ὢν δικαίως τὰ πάντα διέπεις αὐτὸν τὸν μὴ ὀφείλοντα κολασθῆναι καταδικάσαι ἀλλότριον ἡγούμενος τῆς σῆς δυνάμεως

16Because wisdom opened the mouth of the dumb And made the tongues of infants speak clearly.

ἡ γὰρ ἰσχύς σου δικαιοσύνης ἀρχή καὶ τὸ πάντων σε δεσπόζειν πάντων φείδεσθαί σε ποιεῖ

17For to him who disbelieves the perfection of Your power, You show forth Your strength And rebuke the insolence among those who know it.

ἰσχὺν γὰρ ἐνδείκνυσαι ἀπιστούμενος ἐπὶ δυνάμεως τελειότητι καὶ ἐν τοῖς εἰδόσι τὸ θράσος ἐξελέγχεις

18But You who gain the mastery by Your strength Judge with gentleness, For You govern us with great forbearance; And power is present with You to use when You will it.

σὺ δὲ δεσπόζων ἰσχύος ἐν ἐπιεικείᾳ κρίνεις καὶ μετὰ πολλῆς φειδοῦς διοικεῖς ἡμᾶς πάρεστιν γάρ σοι ὅταν θέλῃς τὸ δύνασθαι

19Through such works You taught Your people That the righteous man should love mankind; And You made Your children hopeful By offering them repentance over their sins.

ἐδίδαξας δέ σου τὸν λαὸν διὰ τῶν τοιούτων ἔργων ὅτι δεῖ τὸν δίκαιον εἶναι φιλάνθρωπον καὶ εὐέλπιδας ἐποίησας τοὺς υἱούς σου ὅτι διδοῖς ἐπὶ ἁμαρτήμασιν μετάνοιαν

20For if You punished the enemies of Your children And those liable to death with so much attention and deliberation, And granted them time and opportunity to depart from their evil,

εἰ γὰρ ἐχθροὺς παίδων σου καὶ ὀφειλομένους θανάτῳ μετὰ τοσαύτης ἐτιμωρήσω προσοχῆς καὶ διέσεως δοὺς χρόνους καὶ τόπον δι᾿ ὧν ἀπαλλαγῶσι τῆς κακίας

21With how much strictness did You judge Your children, To whose fathers You gave oaths and covenants of good promises?

μετὰ πόσης ἀκριβείας ἔκρινας τοὺς υἱούς σου ὧν τοῖς πατράσιν ὅρκους καὶ συνθήκας ἔδωκας ἀγαθῶν ὑποσχέσεων

22So then You chastened us, But our enemies with ten thousand whips, That we may care about Your goodness when we judge But expect Your mercy when we are judged.

ἡμᾶς οὖν παιδεύων τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ἡμῶν ἐν μυριότητι μαστιγοῖς ἵνα σου τὴν ἀγαθότητα μεριμνῶμεν κρίνοντες κρινόμενοι δὲ προσδοκῶμεν ἔλεος

23Therefore those who lived unjustly in their foolishness of life You tormented by means of their own abominations.

ὅθεν καὶ τοὺς ἐν ἀφροσύνῃ ζωῆς βιώσαντας ἀδίκως διὰ τῶν ἰδίων ἐβασάνισας βδελυγμάτων

24For they went far astray on the paths of error, Taking up gods which were despised even among their enemies, Being deceived after the manner of foolish children.

καὶ γὰρ τῶν πλάνης ὁδῶν μακρότερον ἐπλανήθησαν θεοὺς ὑπολαμβάνοντες τὰ καὶ ἐν ζῴοις τῶν αἰσχρῶν ἄτιμα νηπίων δίκην ἀφρόνων ψευσθέντες

25Therefore to those thoughtless children You sent Your judgment to mock them;

διὰ τοῦτο ὡς παισὶν ἀλογίστοις τὴν κρίσιν εἰς ἐμπαιγμὸν ἔπεμψας

26But those who were not warned by this light gesture of censure Will be put to the test by the deserved judgment of God.

οἱ δὲ παιγνίοις ἐπιτιμήσεως μὴ νουθετηθέντες ἀξίαν θεοῦ κρίσιν πειράσουσιν

27For when they suffered, they were indignant At those they imagined to be gods, Realizing they were being punished because of them. They also came to recognize the true God Whom they refused to know long ago; Therefore, the utmost of condemnation came upon them.

ἐφ᾿ οἷς γὰρ αὐτοὶ πάσχοντες ἠγανάκτουν ἐπὶ τούτοις οὓς ἐδόκουν θεούς ἐν αὐτοῖς κολαζόμενοι ἰδόντες ὃν πάλαι ἠρνοῦντο εἰδέναι θεὸν ἐπέγνωσαν ἀληθῆ διὸ καὶ τὸ τέρμα τῆς καταδίκης ἐπ᾿ αὐτοὺς ἐπῆλθεν
