Sirach 49

1The remembrance of Josiah is like the composition of incense Prepared by the work of the perfumer. In every mouth it is sweet like honey And like the music at a banquet with wine.

μνημόσυνον Ιωσιου εἰς σύνθεσιν θυμιάματος ἐσκευασμένον ἔργῳ μυρεψοῦ ἐν παντὶ στόματι ὡς μέλι γλυκανθήσεται καὶ ὡς μουσικὰ ἐν συμποσίῳ οἴνου

2He led in the conversion of the people, And he removed the abominations of lawlessness.

αὐτὸς κατευθύνθη ἐν ἐπιστροφῇ λαοῦ καὶ ἐξῆρεν βδελύγματα ἀνομίας

3He directed his heart to the Lord, And in days of lawlessness he strengthened godliness.

κατεύθυνεν πρὸς κύριον τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ ἐν ἡμέραις ἀνόμων κατίσχυσεν τὴν εὐσέβειαν

4Except for David, Hezekiah, and Josiah, All offended continually, For they forsook the law of the Most High. The kings of Judah failed,

πάρεξ Δαυιδ καὶ Εζεκιου καὶ Ιωσιου πάντες πλημμέλειαν ἐπλημμέλησαν κατέλιπον γὰρ τὸν νόμον τοῦ ὑψίστου οἱ βασιλεῖς Ιουδα ἐξέλιπον

5For they gave their power to others And their glory to a foreign nation.

ἔδωκαν γὰρ τὸ κέρας αὐτῶν ἑτέροις καὶ τὴν δόξαν αὐτῶν ἔθνει ἀλλοτρίῳ

6They set fire to the chosen city of the sanctuary And desolated her streets.

ἐνεπύρισαν ἐκλεκτὴν πόλιν ἁγιάσματος καὶ ἠρήμωσαν τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς

7According to the word of Jeremiah; For they did him evil, He who was sanctified as a prophet while still inside his mother, To root out, to afflict, and to destroy, And likewise to build and to plant.

ἐν χειρὶ Ιερεμιου ἐκάκωσαν γὰρ αὐτόν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν μήτρᾳ ἡγιάσθη προφήτης ἐκριζοῦν καὶ κακοῦν καὶ ἀπολλύειν ὡσαύτως οἰκοδομεῖν καὶ καταφυτεύειν

8Ezekiel himself saw a vision of glory, Which the Lord showed him on a chariot of cherubim.

Ιεζεκιηλ ὃς εἶδεν ὅρασιν δόξης ἣν ὑπέδειξεν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ ἅρματος χερουβιν

9For He remembered his enemies with a thunderstorm And did good to those who directed their ways aright.

καὶ γὰρ ἐμνήσθη τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἐν ὄμβρῳ καὶ ἀγαθῶσαι τοὺς εὐθύνοντας ὁδούς

10May He indeed revive the bones Of the twelve prophets from their place. For they encouraged the people of Jacob And redeemed them with steadfast hope.

καὶ τῶν δώδεκα προφητῶν τὰ ὀστᾶ ἀναθάλοι ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῶν παρεκάλεσαν γὰρ τὸν Ιακωβ καὶ ἐλυτρώσαντο αὐτοὺς ἐν πίστει ἐλπίδος

11How shall we magnify Zerubbabel? He was surely like a seal upon the right hand,

πῶς μεγαλύνωμεν τὸν Ζοροβαβελ καὶ αὐτὸς ὡς σφραγὶς ἐπὶ δεξιᾶς χειρός

12And so was Jeshua the son of Jozadak, Who in their days built the house And raised up a holy temple to the Lord, One prepared unto eternal glory.

οὕτως Ἰησοῦς υἱὸς Ιωσεδεκ οἳ ἐν ἡμέραις αὐτῶν ᾠκοδόμησαν οἶκον καὶ ἀνύψωσαν ναὸν ἅγιον κυρίῳ ἡτοιμασμένον εἰς δόξαν αἰῶνος

13There is the lasting memory of Nehemiah, Who raised for us the walls that had fallen; And he established gates and locks And raised again our home sites.

καὶ Νεεμιου ἐπὶ πολὺ τὸ μνημόσυνον τοῦ ἐγείραντος ἡμῖν τείχη πεπτωκότα καὶ στήσαντος πύλας καὶ μοχλοὺς καὶ ἀνεγείραντος τὰ οἰκόπεδα ἡμῶν

14No one like Enoch was created upon the earth, For he himself was taken up from the earth.

οὐδεὶς ἐκτίσθη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τοιοῦτος οἷος Ενωχ καὶ γὰρ αὐτὸς ἀνελήμφθη ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς

15Neither has a man like Joseph been born, The leader of his brothers and the support of his people; And they watched over his bones.

οὐδὲ ὡς Ιωσηφ ἐγεννήθη ἀνὴρ ἡγούμενος ἀδελφῶν στήριγμα λαοῦ καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ ἐπεσκέπησαν

16Shem and Seth were honored among men, And Adam over every living thing in creation.

Σημ καὶ Σηθ ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἐδοξάσθησαν καὶ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ζῷον ἐν τῇ κτίσει Αδαμ
