Sirach 40

1Hard work was created for every man And a heavy yoke for the sons of Adam, From the day they come forth from their mother's womb until the day they return to the mother of all.

ἀσχολία μεγάλη ἔκτισται παντὶ ἀνθρώπῳ καὶ ζυγὸς βαρὺς ἐπὶ υἱοὺς Αδαμ ἀφ᾿ ἡμέρας ἐξόδου ἐκ γαστρὸς μητρὸς αὐτῶν ἕως ἡμέρας ἐπιστροφῆς εἰς μητέρα πάντων

2The conception of things to come and the day of death Trouble their thoughts and cause fear of heart

τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ φόβον καρδίας ἐπίνοια προσδοκίας ἡμέρα τελευτῆς

3From the one sitting on a glorious throne To the one humbled in earth and ashes,

ἀπὸ καθημένου ἐπὶ θρόνου ἐνδόξου καὶ ἕως τεταπεινωμένου ἐν γῇ καὶ σποδῷ

4From the one wearing purple and a crown To the one clothed in burlap, There is anger, envy, trouble, and unrest, And fear of death and fury and strife.

ἀπὸ φοροῦντος ὑακίνθινον καὶ στέφανον καὶ ἕως περιβαλλομένου ὠμόλινον θυμὸς καὶ ζῆλος καὶ ταραχὴ καὶ σάλος καὶ φόβος θανάτου καὶ μηνίαμα καὶ ἔρις

5When it is time for rest on his bed, His night of sleep alters his knowledge.

καὶ ἐν καιρῷ ἀναπαύσεως ἐπὶ κοίτης ὕπνος νυκτὸς ἀλλοιοῖ γνῶσιν αὐτοῦ

6He gets little or no rest, and afterward in his sleep, As though on a day of watch, He is troubled by the vision of his heart, Like one who escapes from the face of battle.

ὀλίγον ὡς οὐδὲν ἐν ἀναπαύσει καὶ ἀπ᾿ ἐκείνου ἐν ὕπνοις ὡς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ σκοπιᾶς τεθορυβημένος ἐν ὁράσει καρδίας αὐτοῦ ὡς ἐκπεφευγὼς ἀπὸ προσώπου πολέμου

7In the exact time of need he awakes And is amazed there was nothing to fear.

ἐν καιρῷ χρείας αὐτοῦ ἐξηγέρθη καὶ ἀποθαυμάζων εἰς οὐδένα φόβον

8With all flesh, from man to animal, And upon sinners seven times more, there will be:

μετὰ πάσης σαρκὸς ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνους καὶ ἐπὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἑπταπλάσια πρὸς ταῦτα

9Death and bloodshed; strife and the sword; Distresses and famine; and ruin and affliction.

θάνατος καὶ αἷμα καὶ ἔρις καὶ ῥομφαία ἐπαγωγαί λιμὸς καὶ σύντριμμα καὶ μάστιξ

10All these things were created for the lawless, And because of them the flood came.

ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀνόμους ἐκτίσθη ταῦτα πάντα καὶ δι᾿ αὐτοὺς ἐγένετο ὁ κατακλυσμός

11Whatever comes from the earth returns to the earth, And whatever comes from the waters returns to the sea.

πάντα ὅσα ἀπὸ γῆς εἰς γῆν ἀναστρέφει καὶ ἀπὸ ὑδάτων εἰς θάλασσαν ἀνακάμπτει

12Every bribe and wrongdoing will be blotted out, But faithfulness shall stand forever.

πᾶν δῶρον καὶ ἀδικία ἐξαλειφθήσεται καὶ πίστις εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα στήσεται

13The wealth of the unrighteous will dry up like a river And sound forth and cease like great thunder in the rain.

χρήματα ἀδίκων ὡς ποταμὸς ξηρανθήσεται καὶ ὡς βροντὴ μεγάλη ἐν ὑετῷ ἐξηχήσει

14A generous man will rejoice, But transgressors will come to ruin.

ἐν τῷ ἀνοῖξαι αὐτὸν χεῖρας εὐφρανθήσεται οὕτως οἱ παραβαίνοντες εἰς συντέλειαν ἐκλείψουσιν

15The offspring of the ungodly shall not grow branches, For they are unclean roots on a hard rock.

ἔκγονα ἀσεβῶν οὐ πληθυνεῖ κλάδους καὶ ῥίζαι ἀκάθαρτοι ἐπ᾿ ἀκροτόμου πέτρας

16Weeds growing by any water or riverbank Will be plucked out before any grass.

ἄχι ἐπὶ παντὸς ὕδατος καὶ χείλους ποταμοῦ πρὸ παντὸς χόρτου ἐκτιλήσεται

17Grace is like a paradise in blessing, And almsgiving endures forever.

χάρις ὡς παράδεισος ἐν εὐλογίαις καὶ ἐλεημοσύνη εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα διαμενεῖ

18The life of the self-reliant and the worker will be sweet, But he who finds a treasure is better off than both.

ζωὴ αὐτάρκους καὶ ἐργάτου γλυκανθήσεται καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα ὁ εὑρίσκων θησαυρόν

19Having children and building a city establish a name, But a blameless wife is accounted better than both.

τέκνα καὶ οἰκοδομὴ πόλεως στηρίζουσιν ὄνομα καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα γυνὴ ἄμωμος λογίζεται

20Wine and music gladden the heart, But love of wisdom is better than both.

οἶνος καὶ μουσικὰ εὐφραίνουσιν καρδίαν καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα ἀγάπησις σοφίας

21The flute and harp give sweet melody, But a pleasant tongue is better than both.

αὐλὸς καὶ ψαλτήριον ἡδύνουσιν μέλη καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα γλῶσσα ἡδεῖα

22The eye will desire grace and beauty, But the green shoots of grain are better than both.

χάριν καὶ κάλλος ἐπιθυμήσει ὀφθαλμὸς καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα χλόην σπόρου

23A friend and companion meet at an appointed time, But a wife meeting with her husband is better than both.

φίλος καὶ ἑταῖρος εἰς καιρὸν ἀπαντῶντες καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα γυνὴ μετὰ ἀνδρός

24Brothers and help are for a time of affliction, But almsgiving rescues better than both.

ἀδελφοὶ καὶ βοήθεια εἰς καιρὸν θλίψεως καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα ἐλεημοσύνη ῥύσεται

25Gold and silver will make the foot secure, But counsel is esteemed more valuable than both.

χρυσίον καὶ ἀργύριον ἐπιστήσουσιν πόδα καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα βουλὴ εὐδοκιμεῖται

26Wealth and strength will lift up the heart, But the fear of the Lord is better than both. There is no loss in the fear of the Lord, And with it there is no need to seek for help.

χρήματα καὶ ἰσχὺς ἀνυψώσουσιν καρδίαν καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀμφότερα φόβος κυρίου οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν φόβῳ κυρίου ἐλάττωσις καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπιζητῆσαι ἐν αὐτῷ βοήθειαν

27The fear of the Lord is like a paradise of blessing And covers a man better than any glory.

φόβος κυρίου ὡς παράδεισος εὐλογίας καὶ ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν δόξαν ἐκάλυψεν αὐτόν

28My child, do not live the life of a beggar, For it is better to die than to beg.

τέκνον ζωὴν ἐπαιτήσεως μὴ βιώσῃς κρεῖσσον ἀποθανεῖν ἢ ἐπαιτεῖν

29When a man looks at another's table, He is living an irrational life. For he will pollute his soul with another's food. But a rational and educated man will guard himself against that.

ἀνὴρ βλέπων εἰς τράπεζαν ἀλλοτρίαν οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῦ ὁ βίος ἐν λογισμῷ ζωῆς ἀλισγήσει ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐδέσμασιν ἀλλοτρίοις ἀνὴρ δὲ ἐπιστήμων καὶ πεπαιδευμένος φυλάξεται

30Begging will be sweet in the mouth of a shameless man, But in his belly a fire will be kindled.

ἐν στόματι ἀναιδοῦς γλυκανθήσεται ἐπαίτησις καὶ ἐν κοιλίᾳ αὐτοῦ πῦρ καήσεται
