Sirach 48

1Then Elijah the prophet rose up like fire, And his word burned like a lamp.

καὶ ἀνέστη Ηλιας προφήτης ὡς πῦρ καὶ ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ ὡς λαμπὰς ἐκαίετο

2He brought a famine upon them, And in his zeal he reduced them in number.

ὃς ἐπήγαγεν ἐπ᾿ αὐτοὺς λιμὸν καὶ τῷ ζήλῳ αὐτοῦ ὠλιγοποίησεν αὐτούς

3By the word of the Lord he shut up heaven, And also three times he brought down fire.

ἐν λόγῳ κυρίου ἀνέσχεν οὐρανόν κατήγαγεν οὕτως τρὶς πῦρ

4So by your wonders you were honored, O Elijah, And who can boast like you?

ὡς ἐδοξάσθης Ηλια ἐν θαυμασίοις σου καὶ τίς ὅμοιός σοι καυχᾶσθαι

5You raised the dead from death And from Hades by the word of the Most High.

ὁ ἐγείρας νεκρὸν ἐκ θανάτου καὶ ἐξ ᾅδου ἐν λόγῳ ὑψίστου

6You brought down kings to destruction, And from their bed, those who had been honored.

ὁ καταγαγὼν βασιλεῖς εἰς ἀπώλειαν καὶ δεδοξασμένους ἀπὸ κλίνης αὐτῶν

7You heard rebuke at Sinai, And at Horeb the judgments of punishment.

ἀκούων ἐν Σινα ἐλεγμὸν καὶ ἐν Χωρηβ κρίματα ἐκδικήσεως

8You anointed kings for retribution And prophets to serve after you.

ὁ χρίων βασιλεῖς εἰς ἀνταπόδομα καὶ προφήτας διαδόχους μετ᾿ αὐτόν

9You were taken up in a fiery whirlwind, In a chariot of flaming horses.

ὁ ἀναλημφθεὶς ἐν λαίλαπι πυρὸς ἐν ἅρματι ἵππων πυρίνων

10It is written that you will come at the proper time with rebukes To calm the wrath of God before it breaks forth in fury, To turn the heart of the father to the son, And to restore the tribes of Jacob.

ὁ καταγραφεὶς ἐν ἐλεγμοῖς εἰς καιροὺς κοπάσαι ὀργὴν πρὸ θυμοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι καρδίαν πατρὸς πρὸς υἱὸν καὶ καταστῆσαι φυλὰς Ιακωβ

11Blessed are those who saw you And who fell asleep with love, For indeed we will surely live.

μακάριοι οἱ ἰδόντες σε καὶ οἱ ἐν ἀγαπήσει κεκοιμημένοι καὶ γὰρ ἡμεῖς ζωῇ ζησόμεθα

12Elijah was covered by the whirlwind, And Elisha was filled with his spirit. And in his days he trembled before no ruler, And no one oppressed him.

Ηλιας ὃς ἐν λαίλαπι ἐσκεπάσθη καὶ Ελισαιε ἐνεπλήσθη πνεύματος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν ἡμέραις αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐσαλεύθη ὑπὸ ἄρχοντος καὶ οὐ κατεδυνάστευσεν αὐτὸν οὐδείς

13No word could overcome him, And after death his body prophesied.

πᾶς λόγος οὐχ ὑπερῆρεν αὐτόν καὶ ἐν κοιμήσει ἐπροφήτευσεν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ

14As in his life he did wonders, So even in death his works were amazing.

καὶ ἐν ζωῇ αὐτοῦ ἐποίησεν τέρατα καὶ ἐν τελευτῇ θαυμάσια τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ

15For all these things the people did not repent, Nor they did turn away from their sins Until their land was plundered; Then they were scattered over all the earth.

ἐν πᾶσιν τούτοις οὐ μετενόησεν ὁ λαὸς καὶ οὐκ ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν ἕως ἐπρονομεύθησαν ἀπὸ γῆς αὐτῶν καὶ διεσκορπίσθησαν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ

16But a people few in number were left And a ruler in the house of David. Some of them did what was virtuous, But some multiplied sins.

καὶ κατελείφθη ὁ λαὸς ὀλιγοστός καὶ ἄρχων ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Δαυιδ τινὲς μὲν αὐτῶν ἐποίησαν τὸ ἀρεστόν τινὲς δὲ ἐπλήθυναν ἁμαρτίας

17Hezekiah fortified his city And brought water into its midst. He dug through the hard rock with iron And constructed cisterns for the water.

Εζεκιας ὠχύρωσεν τὴν πόλιν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰσήγαγεν εἰς μέσον αὐτῆς ὕδωρ ὤρυξεν σιδήρῳ ἀκρότομον καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν κρήνας εἰς ὕδατα

18In his days, Sennacherib came up And sent out the Rabshakeh, and he retreated. Then he lifted up his hand against Zion And boasted in his arrogance.

ἐν ἡμέραις αὐτοῦ ἀνέβη Σενναχηριμ καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ραψακην καὶ ἀπῆρεν καὶ ἐπῆρεν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ Σιων καὶ ἐμεγαλαύχησεν ἐν ὑπερηφανίᾳ αὐτοῦ

19So their hearts and hands were shaken, And they suffered pain like women giving birth.

τότε ἐσαλεύθησαν καρδίαι καὶ χεῖρες αὐτῶν καὶ ὠδίνησαν ὡς αἱ τίκτουσαι

20Then they called upon the merciful Lord, Stretching out their hands toward Him. Thus the Holy One quickly heard them from heaven And rescued them by the hand of Isaiah.

καὶ ἐπεκαλέσαντο τὸν κύριον τὸν ἐλεήμονα ἐκπετάσαντες τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ ὁ ἅγιος ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ταχὺ ἐπήκουσεν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐλυτρώσατο αὐτοὺς ἐν χειρὶ Ησαιου

21He struck the camp of the Assyrians, And his angel destroyed them.

ἐπάταξεν τὴν παρεμβολὴν τῶν Ἀσσυρίων καὶ ἐξέτριψεν αὐτοὺς ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτοῦ

22For Hezekiah did what was pleasing to the Lord And grew strong in the ways of David his father, Which Isaiah the prophet commanded, The one great and faithful in his vision.

ἐποίησεν γὰρ Εζεκιας τὸ ἀρεστὸν κυρίῳ καὶ ἐνίσχυσεν ἐν ὁδοῖς Δαυιδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἃς ἐνετείλατο Ησαιας ὁ προφήτης ὁ μέγας καὶ πιστὸς ἐν ὁράσει αὐτοῦ

23In his days the sun moved backward And lengthened the life of the king.

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτοῦ ἀνεπόδισεν ὁ ἥλιος καὶ προσέθηκεν ζωὴν βασιλεῖ

24With a great spirit he saw the last things And encouraged those who mourned in Zion.

πνεύματι μεγάλῳ εἶδεν τὰ ἔσχατα καὶ παρεκάλεσεν τοὺς πενθοῦντας ἐν Σιων

25He showed what was to come to the end of time, And the hidden things before they came to pass.

ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος ὑπέδειξεν τὰ ἐσόμενα καὶ τὰ ἀπόκρυφα πρὶν ἢ παραγενέσθαι αὐτά
