Sirach 47

1Then after this Nathan rose up To prophesy in the days of David.

καὶ μετὰ τοῦτον ἀνέστη Ναθαν προφητεύειν ἐν ἡμέραις Δαυιδ

2As the fat was divided from the peace offering, So David was separated from the sons of Israel.

ὥσπερ στέαρ ἀφωρισμένον ἀπὸ σωτηρίου οὕτως Δαυιδ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ

3He played with lions as with young goats, And with bears as with lambs of sheep.

ἐν λέουσιν ἔπαιξεν ὡς ἐν ἐρίφοις καὶ ἐν ἄρκοις ὡς ἐν ἄρνασι προβάτων

4Did he not slay a giant in his youth, And remove the disgrace from the people When he took in his hand a stone for a sling And struck down the arrogance of Goliath?

ἐν νεότητι αὐτοῦ οὐχὶ ἀπέκτεινεν γίγαντα καὶ ἐξῆρεν ὀνειδισμὸν ἐκ λαοῦ ἐν τῷ ἐπᾶραι χεῖρα ἐν λίθῳ σφενδόνης καὶ καταβαλεῖν γαυρίαμα τοῦ Γολιαθ

5For he called upon the Lord Most High, And strength was given to his right hand To defeat the mighty man in battle, To exalt the power of his people.

ἐπεκαλέσατο γὰρ κύριον τὸν ὕψιστον καὶ ἔδωκεν ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ κράτος ἐξᾶραι ἄνθρωπον δυνατὸν ἐν πολέμῳ ἀνυψῶσαι κέρας λαοῦ αὐτοῦ

6So for his tens of thousands they glorified him And praised him for the blessings of the Lord when they brought him a diadem of glory.

οὕτως ἐν μυριάσιν ἐδόξασαν αὐτὸν καὶ ᾔνεσαν αὐτὸν ἐν εὐλογίαις κυρίου ἐν τῷ φέρεσθαι αὐτῷ διάδημα δόξης

7For he destroyed his enemies all around, Reduced to nothing his enemies the Philistines, And crushed their power to this very day.

ἐξέτριψεν γὰρ ἐχθροὺς κυκλόθεν καὶ ἐξουδένωσεν Φυλιστιιμ τοὺς ὑπεναντίους ἕως σήμερον συνέτριψεν αὐτῶν κέρας

8In his every work, he gave thanks with a word of praise To the Holy One, the Most High; And he sang a hymn with all his heart And loved his Maker.

ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν ἐξομολόγησιν ἁγίῳ ὑψίστῳ ῥήματι δόξης ἐν πάσῃ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ ὕμνησεν καὶ ἠγάπησεν τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτόν

9He placed psalm-singers before the altar To make sweet melody with their voices.

καὶ ἔστησεν ψαλτῳδοὺς κατέναντι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ ἐξ ἠχοῦς αὐτῶν γλυκαίνειν μέλη

10He gave dignity to the feasts And set in order the appointed times throughout the year For them to praise His holy name, And for the sanctuary to resound from early morning.

ἔδωκεν ἐν ἑορταῖς εὐπρέπειαν καὶ ἐκόσμησεν καιροὺς μέχρι συντελείας ἐν τῷ αἰνεῖν αὐτοὺς τὸ ἅγιον ὄνομα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπὸ πρωίας ἠχεῖν τὸ ἁγίασμα

11The Lord took away his sins, Exalted his power forever, And gave him a covenant of kings And a throne of glory in Israel.

κύριος ἀφεῖλεν τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνύψωσεν εἰς αἰῶνα τὸ κέρας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ διαθήκην βασιλέων καὶ θρόνον δόξης ἐν τῷ Ισραηλ

12After him there arose his wise son, Who lodged in a broad space because of him.

μετὰ τοῦτον ἀνέστη υἱὸς ἐπιστήμων καὶ δι᾿ αὐτὸν κατέλυσεν ἐν πλατυσμῷ

13For Solomon reigned in days of peace, To whom God gave rest on every side That he might establish a house for His name And prepare a sanctuary to last forever.

Σαλωμων ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν ἡμέραις εἰρήνης ᾧ ὁ θεὸς κατέπαυσεν κυκλόθεν ἵνα στήσῃ οἶκον ἐπ᾿ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἑτοιμάσῃ ἁγίασμα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

14How wise you were in your youth, And filled with understanding like a river.

ὡς ἐσοφίσθης ἐν νεότητί σου καὶ ἐνεπλήσθης ὡς ποταμὸς συνέσεως

15Your soul covered the earth, And you were filled with the parables of riddles.

γῆν ἐπεκάλυψεν ἡ ψυχή σου καὶ ἐνέπλησας ἐν παραβολαῖς αἰνιγμάτων

16Your name was known to islands far away, And you were loved for your peace

εἰς νήσους πόρρω ἀφίκετο τὸ ὄνομά σου καὶ ἠγαπήθης ἐν τῇ εἰρήνῃ σου

17And for your songs, proverbs, and parables; Nations marveled at you because of your interpretations.

ἐν ᾠδαῖς καὶ παροιμίαις καὶ παραβολαῖς καὶ ἐν ἑρμηνείαις ἀπεθαύμασάν σε χῶραι

18In the name of the Lord God, Who is called the God of Israel, You collected gold like tin And multiplied silver like lead.

ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἐπικεκλημένου θεοῦ Ισραηλ συνήγαγες ὡς κασσίτερον τὸ χρυσίον καὶ ὡς μόλιβον ἐπλήθυνας ἀργύριον

19But you lay down beside women And were enslaved by your body.

παρανέκλινας τὰς λαγόνας σου γυναιξὶν καὶ ἐνεξουσιάσθης ἐν τῷ σώματί σου

20You brought disgrace on your honor And defiled your seed So as to bring wrath upon your children; And they were pierced by your lack of good sense.

ἔδωκας μῶμον ἐν τῇ δόξῃ σου καὶ ἐβεβήλωσας τὸ σπέρμα σου ἐπαγαγεῖν ὀργὴν ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα σου καὶ κατανυγῆναι ἐπὶ τῇ ἀφροσύνῃ σου

21Thus one kingdom became two, For out of Ephraim there began a disobedient kingdom.

γενέσθαι δίχα τυραννίδα καὶ ἐξ Εφραιμ ἄρξαι βασιλείαν ἀπειθῆ

22But the Lord did not abandon His mercy Nor corrupt any of His words. Neither did He wipe away the descendants of His chosen one, Nor did He remove the seed of the one who loved Him. He gave a remnant to Jacob, And to David a root from his stock.

ὁ δὲ κύριος οὐ μὴ καταλίπῃ τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ διαφθείρῃ ἀπὸ τῶν λόγων αὐτοῦ οὐδὲ μὴ ἐξαλείψῃ ἐκλεκτοῦ αὐτοῦ ἔκγονα καὶ σπέρμα τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντος αὐτὸν οὐ μὴ ἐξάρῃ καὶ τῷ Ιακωβ ἔδωκεν κατάλειμμα καὶ τῷ Δαυιδ ἐξ αὐτοῦ ῥίζαν

23When Solomon rested with his fathers, He left behind him one of his sons, Lacking in good sense and understanding, Rehoboam, who turned away the people by his counsel.

καὶ ἀνεπαύσατο Σαλωμων μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ κατέλιπεν μετ᾿ αὐτὸν ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος αὐτοῦ λαοῦ ἀφροσύνην καὶ ἐλασσούμενον συνέσει Ροβοαμ ὃς ἀπέστησεν λαὸν ἐκ βουλῆς αὐτοῦ

24There was also Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, Who caused Israel to sin And led Ephraim on the road to sin. Then their sins were multiplied exceedingly So as to remove them from their land.

καὶ Ιεροβοαμ υἱὸς Ναβατ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ καὶ ἔδωκεν τῷ Εφραιμ ὁδὸν ἁμαρτίας καὶ ἐπληθύνθησαν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι αὐτῶν σφόδρα ἀποστῆσαι αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν

25They sought every wickedness Until punishment came upon them.

καὶ πᾶσαν πονηρίαν ἐξεζήτησαν ἕως ἐκδίκησις ἔλθῃ ἐπ᾿ αὐτούς
