4 Kingdoms 2

1As the time came to be for the Lord to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha went from Gilgal.

καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἀνάγειν κύριον τὸν Ηλιου ἐν συσσεισμῷ ὡς εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ηλιου καὶ Ελισαιε ἐκ Γαλγαλων

2Then Elijah said to Elisha, 'Stay here, please, for the Lord sent me to Bethel.' But Elisha said, 'As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!' So they went to Bethel.

καὶ εἶπεν Ηλιου πρὸς Ελισαιε κάθου δὴ ἐνταῦθα ὅτι κύριος ἀπέσταλκέν με ἕως Βαιθηλ καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε ζῇ κύριος καὶ ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου εἰ καταλείψω σε καὶ ἦλθον εἰς Βαιθηλ

3Now the sons of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, 'Do you know that this day the Lord will take away your master from over your head?' And he said, 'I know. Please be silent!'

καὶ ἦλθον οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν προφητῶν οἱ ἐν Βαιθηλ πρὸς Ελισαιε καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν εἰ ἔγνως ὅτι κύριος σήμερον λαμβάνει τὸν κύριόν σου ἐπάνωθεν τῆς κεφαλῆς σου καὶ εἶπεν κἀγὼ ἔγνωκα σιωπᾶτε

4Then Elijah said to him, 'Elisha, stay here, please, for the Lord sent me to Jericho.' But he said, 'As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!' And they went to Jericho.

καὶ εἶπεν Ηλιου πρὸς Ελισαιε κάθου δὴ ἐνταῦθα ὅτι κύριος ἀπέσταλκέν με εἰς Ιεριχω καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε ζῇ κύριος καὶ ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου εἰ ἐγκαταλείψω σε καὶ ἦλθον εἰς Ιεριχω

5Now the sons of the prophets in Jericho came to Elisha and said to him, 'Do you know that this day the Lord will take away your master from over your head?' So he answered, 'I know, please be silent!'

καὶ ἤγγισαν οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν προφητῶν οἱ ἐν Ιεριχω πρὸς Ελισαιε καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν εἰ ἔγνως ὅτι σήμερον λαμβάνει κύριος τὸν κύριόν σου ἐπάνωθεν τῆς κεφαλῆς σου καὶ εἶπεν καί γε ἐγὼ ἔγνων σιωπᾶτε

6Then Elijah said to him, 'Stay here, please, for the Lord sent me on to the Jordan.' But Elisha said, 'As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!' So both of them went on.

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ηλιου κάθου δὴ ὧδε ὅτι κύριος ἀπέσταλκέν με ἕως τοῦ Ιορδάνου καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε ζῇ κύριος καὶ ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου εἰ ἐγκαταλείψω σε καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἀμφότεροι

7Fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.

καὶ πεντήκοντα ἄνδρες υἱοὶ τῶν προφητῶν καὶ ἔστησαν ἐξ ἐναντίας μακρόθεν καὶ ἀμφότεροι ἔστησαν ἐπὶ τοῦ Ιορδάνου

8Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water. The water divided this way and that, and the two of them crossed on dry ground.

καὶ ἔλαβεν Ηλιου τὴν μηλωτὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἵλησεν καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ διῃρέθη τὸ ὕδωρ ἔνθα καὶ ἔνθα καὶ διέβησαν ἀμφότεροι ἐν ἐρήμῳ

9So it was that during the time they crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask what I may do for you, before I am taken away from you.' Elisha said, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.'

καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ διαβῆναι αὐτοὺς καὶ Ηλιου εἶπεν πρὸς Ελισαιε αἴτησαι τί ποιήσω σοι πρὶν ἢ ἀναλημφθῆναί με ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε γενηθήτω δὴ διπλᾶ ἐν πνεύματί σου ἐπ᾿ ἐμέ

10So Elijah said, 'You have asked a hard thing. If you see me when I am taken up from you, it shall be so for you; and if not, it shall not be so.'

καὶ εἶπεν Ηλιου ἐσκλήρυνας τοῦ αἰτήσασθαι ἐὰν ἴδῃς με ἀναλαμβανόμενον ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ ἔσται σοι οὕτως καὶ ἐὰν μή οὐ μὴ γένηται

11Thus it came to be, as they walked and continued to talk, behold a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and the fire separated them one from the other; and Elijah was taken up into heaven by a whirlwind.

καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτῶν πορευομένων ἐπορεύοντο καὶ ἐλάλουν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἅρμα πυρὸς καὶ ἵπποι πυρὸς καὶ διέστειλαν ἀνὰ μέσον ἀμφοτέρων καὶ ἀνελήμφθη Ηλιου ἐν συσσεισμῷ ὡς εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν

12Then Elisha saw it and cried aloud, 'Father, O father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!' He saw Elijah no more, and he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.

καὶ Ελισαιε ἑώρα καὶ ἐβόα πάτερ πάτερ ἅρμα Ισραηλ καὶ ἱππεὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐκ εἶδεν αὐτὸν ἔτι καὶ ἐπελάβετο τῶν ἱματίων αὐτοῦ καὶ διέρρηξεν αὐτὰ εἰς δύο ῥήγματα

13Then he raised Elijah's mantle, which fell from Elijah and upon Elisha, and Elisha returned and stood on the bank of the River Jordan.

καὶ ὕψωσεν τὴν μηλωτὴν Ηλιου ἣ ἔπεσεν ἐπάνωθεν Ελισαιε καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Ελισαιε καὶ ἔστη ἐπὶ τοῦ χείλους τοῦ Ιορδάνου

14He took Elijah's mantle which had fallen upon him and struck the water, but it did not divide. Then he said, 'Where is the Lord God of Elijah himself?' And he struck the water again, and it divided this way and that. So Elisha crossed over.

καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν μηλωτὴν Ηλιου ἣ ἔπεσεν ἐπάνωθεν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ οὐ διέστη καὶ εἶπεν ποῦ ὁ θεὸς Ηλιου αφφω καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὰ ὕδατα καὶ διερράγησαν ἔνθα καὶ ἔνθα καὶ διέβη Ελισαιε

15When the sons of the prophets in Jericho met him and saw him, they said, 'The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.' And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

καὶ εἶδον αὐτὸν οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν προφητῶν οἱ ἐν Ιεριχω ἐξ ἐναντίας καὶ εἶπον ἐπαναπέπαυται τὸ πνεῦμα Ηλιου ἐπὶ Ελισαιε καὶ ἦλθον εἰς συναντὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν

16They said to him, 'Look! There are fifty men of power with your servants. Please let them go and search for your master, lest perhaps the Spirit of the Lord took him up and cast him into the Jordan or onto one of the mountains or onto one of the hills.' Elisha said, 'Send no one.'

καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν ἰδοὺ δὴ μετὰ τῶν παίδων σου πεντήκοντα ἄνδρες υἱοὶ δυνάμεως πορευθέντες δὴ ζητησάτωσαν τὸν κύριόν σου μήποτε ἦρεν αὐτὸν πνεῦμα κυρίου καὶ ἔρριψεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ Ιορδάνῃ ἢ ἐφ᾿ ἓν τῶν ὀρέων ἢ ἐφ᾿ ἕνα τῶν βουνῶν καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε οὐκ ἀποστελεῖτε

17But they urged him till he was ashamed, and he said, 'Send them!' They sent fifty men and searched for three days, but did not find him.

καὶ παρεβιάσαντο αὐτὸν ἕως ὅτου ᾐσχύνετο καὶ εἶπεν ἀποστείλατε καὶ ἀπέστειλαν πεντήκοντα ἄνδρας καὶ ἐζήτησαν τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ οὐχ εὗρον αὐτόν

18They came back to where Elisha stayed in Jericho. And he said to them, 'Did I not say to you, 'Do not go'?'

καὶ ἀνέστρεψαν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐκάθητο ἐν Ιεριχω καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε οὐκ εἶπον πρὸς ὑμᾶς μὴ πορευθῆτε

19Then the men of the city said to Elisha, 'Behold, as my lord can see, this city is a pleasant place to live, but the water is bad, and the ground is barren.'

καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἄνδρες τῆς πόλεως πρὸς Ελισαιε ἰδοὺ ἡ κατοίκησις τῆς πόλεως ἀγαθή καθὼς ὁ κύριος βλέπει καὶ τὰ ὕδατα πονηρὰ καὶ ἡ γῆ ἀτεκνουμένη

20So Elisha said, 'Bring me a new water pitcher and put salt in it.' So they brought it to him.

καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε λάβετέ μοι ὑδρίσκην καινὴν καὶ θέτε ἐκεῖ ἅλα καὶ ἔλαβον πρὸς αὐτόν

21Then he went out to the spring of the waters and cast salt into it, and said, 'Thus says the Lord: 'I have healed these waters; from them there shall no longer be death or barrenness.' '

καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ελισαιε εἰς τὴν διέξοδον τῶν ὑδάτων καὶ ἔρριψεν ἐκεῖ ἅλα καὶ εἶπεν τάδε λέγει κύριος ἴαμαι τὰ ὕδατα ταῦτα οὐκ ἔσται ἔτι ἐκεῖθεν θάνατος καὶ ἀτεκνουμένη

22So the water was healed by the word Elisha spoke, and so it remains today.

καὶ ἰάθησαν τὰ ὕδατα ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα Ελισαιε ὃ ἐλάλησεν

23From there he went up to Bethel. Along the way some young boys came from the city who continued teasing him by saying, 'Go up, baldy, go up!'

καὶ ἀνέβη ἐκεῖθεν εἰς Βαιθηλ καὶ ἀναβαίνοντος αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καὶ παιδάρια μικρὰ ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ κατέπαιζον αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ ἀνάβαινε φαλακρέ ἀνάβαινε

24So Elisha turned around and stared at them. He then cursed them in the name of the Lord, and two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.

καὶ ἐξένευσεν ὀπίσω αὐτῶν καὶ εἶδεν αὐτὰ καὶ κατηράσατο αὐτοῖς ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐξῆλθον δύο ἄρκοι ἐκ τοῦ δρυμοῦ καὶ ἀνέρρηξαν ἐξ αὐτῶν τεσσαράκοντα καὶ δύο παῖδας

25From there he went to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὸ ὄρος τὸ Καρμήλιον καὶ ἐκεῖθεν ἐπέστρεψεν εἰς Σαμάρειαν
