4 Kingdoms 14

1In the second year of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, became king.

ἐν ἔτει δευτέρῳ τῷ Ιωας υἱῷ Ιωαχας βασιλεῖ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Αμεσσιας υἱὸς Ιωας βασιλεὺς Ιουδα

2He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he ruled for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

υἱὸς εἴκοσι καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν ἦν ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτὸν καὶ εἴκοσι καὶ ἐννέα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ὄνομα τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Ιωαδιν ἐξ Ιερουσαλημ

3He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, yet not like his father David. He did everything as did his father Joash.

καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ εὐθὲς ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου πλὴν οὐχ ὡς Δαυιδ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν Ιωας ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐποίησεν

4However, he did not remove the high places, and the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

πλὴν τὰ ὑψηλὰ οὐκ ἐξῆρεν ἔτι ὁ λαὸς ἐθυσίαζεν καὶ ἐθυμίων ἐν τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς

5And it came to be, when the kingdom was established in his hand, Amaziah had his servants who had murdered his father struck with a deadly blow.

καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε κατίσχυσεν ἡ βασιλεία ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ τοὺς πατάξαντας τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ

6But he did not have the sons of the murderers put to death, for just as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, as the Lord commanded, saying, 'Fathers shall not face death on behalf of their sons, nor shall sons face death on behalf of their father, but each one shall face death for his own sin.'

καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν παταξάντων οὐκ ἐθανάτωσεν καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν βιβλίῳ νόμων Μωυσῆ ὡς ἐνετείλατο κύριος λέγων οὐκ ἀποθανοῦνται πατέρες ὑπὲρ υἱῶν καὶ υἱοὶ οὐκ ἀποθανοῦνται ὑπὲρ πατέρων ὅτι ἀλλ᾿ ἢ ἕκαστος ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται

7He killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, and took Sela by war and called it Joktheel, until this day.

αὐτὸς ἐπάταξεν τὸν Εδωμ ἐν Γαιμελε δέκα χιλιάδας καὶ συνέλαβε τὴν πέτραν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Καθοηλ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης

8Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, 'Come here! Let us look one another in the face.'

τότε ἀπέστειλεν Αμεσσιας ἀγγέλους πρὸς Ιωας υἱὸν Ιωαχας υἱοῦ Ιου βασιλέως Ισραηλ λέγων δεῦρο ὀφθῶμεν προσώποις

9So Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, 'The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son as wife'; but wild beasts of the fields in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ιωας βασιλεὺς Ισραηλ πρὸς Αμεσσιαν βασιλέα Ιουδα λέγων ὁ ακαν ὁ ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τὴν κέδρον τὴν ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ λέγων δὸς τὴν θυγατέρα σου τῷ υἱῷ μου εἰς γυναῖκα καὶ διῆλθον τὰ θηρία τοῦ ἀγροῦ τὰ ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ καὶ συνεπάτησαν τὸν ακανα

10You indeed defeated Edom, and your heart lifts you up. So while sitting at your house, be glorified in yourself; why wrangle in your hateful feelings and fall to your destruction, and Judah with you?'

τύπτων ἐπάταξας τὴν Ιδουμαίαν καὶ ἐπῆρέν σε ἡ καρδία σου ἐνδοξάσθητι καθήμενος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου καὶ ἵνα τί ἐρίζεις ἐν κακίᾳ σου καὶ πεσῇ σὺ καὶ Ιουδας μετὰ σοῦ

11But Amaziah did not heed the words. So the king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth Shemesh of Judah.

καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσεν Αμεσσιας καὶ ἀνέβη ὁ βασιλεὺς Ισραηλ καὶ ὤφθησαν προσώποις αὐτὸς καὶ Αμεσσιας βασιλεὺς Ιουδα ἐν Βαιθσαμυς τῇ τοῦ Ιουδα

12Thus Judah fell before Israel, and every man fled to his tent.

καὶ ἔπταισεν Ιουδας ἀπὸ προσώπου Ισραηλ καὶ ἔφυγεν ἀνὴρ εἰς τὸ σκήνωμα αὐτοῦ

13Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. And Jehoash came to Jerusalem and broke down four hundred cubits of the wall of Jerusalem, from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate.

καὶ τὸν Αμεσσιαν υἱὸν Ιωας υἱοῦ Οχοζιου βασιλέα Ιουδα συνέλαβεν Ιωας υἱὸς Ιωαχας βασιλεὺς Ισραηλ ἐν Βαιθσαμυς καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ καὶ καθεῖλεν ἐν τῷ τείχει Ιερουσαλημ ἐν τῇ πύλῃ Εφραιμ ἕως πύλης τῆς γωνίας τετρακοσίους πήχεις

14He took the silver and gold and all the vessels found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house, and the indentured servants, and returned to Samaria.

καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸ χρυσίον καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ εὑρεθέντα ἐν οἴκῳ κυρίου καὶ ἐν θησαυροῖς οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν συμμίξεων καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν εἰς Σαμάρειαν

15Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash, including all he did in his might, how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, are these not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ιωας ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν δυναστείᾳ αὐτοῦ ἃ ἐπολέμησεν μετὰ Αμεσσιου βασιλέως Ιουδα οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ

16So Jehoash rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. Then Jeroboam his son ruled in his place.

καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ιωας μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ μετὰ τῶν βασιλέων Ισραηλ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ιεροβοαμ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντ᾿ αὐτοῦ

17Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.

καὶ ἔζησεν Αμεσσιας υἱὸς Ιωας βασιλεὺς Ιουδα μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν Ιωας υἱὸν Ιωαχας βασιλέα Ισραηλ πεντεκαίδεκα ἔτη

18Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah and all he did, are these not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Judah?

καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Αμεσσιου καὶ πάντα ἃ ἐποίησεν οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ιουδα

19They plotted a conspiracy against Amaziah in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent after him to Lachish, and there they put him to death.

καὶ συνεστράφησαν ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν σύστρεμμα ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἔφυγεν εἰς Λαχις καὶ ἀπέστειλαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εἰς Λαχις καὶ ἐθανάτωσαν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ

20They brought him on horses, and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the City of David.

καὶ ἦραν αὐτὸν ἐφ᾿ ἵππων καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν Ιερουσαλημ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν πόλει Δαυιδ

21Afterwards, all the people of Judah took Azariah, when he was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.

καὶ ἔλαβεν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς Ιουδα τὸν Αζαριαν καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς ἑκκαίδεκα ἐτῶν καὶ ἐβασίλευσαν αὐτὸν ἀντὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Αμεσσιου

22After the king rested with his fathers, Azariah rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah.

αὐτὸς ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν Αιλωθ καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν αὐτὴν τῷ Ιουδα μετὰ τὸ κοιμηθῆναι τὸν βασιλέα μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ

23In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, Jeroboam the son of Joash became king over Israel in Samaria and ruled for forty-one years.

ἐν ἔτει πεντεκαιδεκάτῳ τοῦ Αμεσσιου υἱοῦ Ιωας βασιλέως Ιουδα ἐβασίλευσεν Ιεροβοαμ υἱὸς Ιωας ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ τεσσαράκοντα καὶ ἓν ἔτος

24And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who led Israel to sin.

καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον κυρίου οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ πασῶν ἁμαρτιῶν Ιεροβοαμ υἱοῦ Ναβατ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ

25He rescued the people from the territory of Israel, from the entrance to Hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, in accordance with the word the Lord God of Israel spoke through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.

αὐτὸς ἀπέστησεν τὸ ὅριον Ισραηλ ἀπὸ εἰσόδου Αιμαθ ἕως τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς Αραβα κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα κυρίου θεοῦ Ισραηλ ὃ ἐλάλησεν ἐν χειρὶ δούλου αὐτοῦ Ιωνα υἱοῦ Αμαθι τοῦ προφήτου τοῦ ἐκ Γεθχοβερ

26For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; that they were few in number, lacking much and forsaken, and there was no one to come to the aid of Israel.

ὅτι εἶδεν κύριος τὴν ταπείνωσιν Ισραηλ πικρὰν σφόδρα καὶ ὀλιγοστοὺς συνεχομένους καὶ ἐσπανισμένους καὶ ἐγκαταλελειμμένους καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ βοηθῶν τῷ Ισραηλ

27And the Lord said He would not blot out the seed of Israel from beneath heaven; so He delivered them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.

καὶ οὐκ ἐλάλησεν κύριος ἐξαλεῖψαι τὸ σπέρμα Ισραηλ ὑποκάτωθεν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἔσωσεν αὐτοὺς διὰ χειρὸς Ιεροβοαμ υἱοῦ Ιωας

28Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did and his power to wage war, and how he rescued Damascus and Hamath of Judah for Israel, are these not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ιεροβοαμ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν καὶ αἱ δυναστεῖαι αὐτοῦ ὅσα ἐπολέμησεν καὶ ὅσα ἐπέστρεψεν τὴν Δαμασκὸν καὶ τὴν Αιμαθ τῷ Ιουδα ἐν Ισραηλ οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ

29So Jeroboam rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel. Then Azariah the son of Amaziah ruled in his place.

καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ιεροβοαμ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ μετὰ βασιλέων Ισραηλ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Αζαριας υἱὸς Αμεσσιου ἀντὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ
