1Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the Lord.

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ πρὸς Σαουλ ἐμὲ ἀπέστειλεν κύριος χρῖσαί σε εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ νῦν ἄκουε τῆς φωνῆς κυρίου

2Thus says the Lord Sabaoth, 'I will exact vengeance for what Amalek did to Israel when he met Israel on his journey coming out of Egypt.

τάδε εἶπεν κύριος σαβαωθ νῦν ἐκδικήσω ἃ ἐποίησεν Αμαληκ τῷ Ισραηλ ὡς ἀπήντησεν αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἀναβαίνοντος αὐτοῦ ἐξ Αἰγύπτου

3Now go and strike down Amalek and Jerim and all of his things, and take nothing from him. You shall utterly destroy him. You shall curse him and everything that is his. You shall not spare anything of his. And you shall slay both man and woman, infant and nursing child, calf and sheep, and camel and donkey.' '

καὶ νῦν πορεύου καὶ πατάξεις τὸν Αμαληκ καὶ Ιεριμ καὶ πάντα τὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ περιποιήσῃ ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξολεθρεύσεις αὐτὸν καὶ ἀναθεματιεῖς αὐτὸν καὶ πάντα τὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ φείσῃ ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀποκτενεῖς ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς καὶ ἕως γυναικὸς καὶ ἀπὸ νηπίου ἕως θηλάζοντος καὶ ἀπὸ μόσχου ἕως προβάτου καὶ ἀπὸ καμήλου ἕως ὄνου

4So Saul told the people and numbered them in Gilgal, four hundred thousand troops, and from Judah thirty thousand troops.

καὶ παρήγγειλεν Σαουλ τῷ λαῷ καὶ ἐπισκέπτεται αὐτοὺς ἐν Γαλγαλοις τετρακοσίας χιλιάδας ταγμάτων καὶ τὸν Ιουδαν τριάκοντα χιλιάδας ταγμάτων

5And Saul came to the cities of Amalek and set an ambush in the valley.

καὶ ἦλθεν Σαουλ ἕως τῶν πόλεων Αμαληκ καὶ ἐνήδρευσεν ἐν τῷ χειμάρρῳ

6Then Saul said to the Kenites, 'Go and depart from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed mercy to the sons of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.' So the Kenites departed from the midst of Amalek.

καὶ εἶπεν Σαουλ πρὸς τὸν Κιναῖον ἄπελθε καὶ ἔκκλινον ἐκ μέσου τοῦ Αμαληκίτου μὴ προσθῶ σε μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ σὺ ἐποίησας ἔλεος μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἐν τῷ ἀναβαίνειν αὐτοὺς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἐξέκλινεν ὁ Κιναῖος ἐκ μέσου Αμαληκ

7Saul attacked the Amalekites from Havilah all the way to Shur, which is before Egypt.

καὶ ἐπάταξεν Σαουλ τὸν Αμαληκ ἀπὸ Ευιλατ ἕως Σουρ ἐπὶ προσώπου Αἰγύπτου

8He took captive Agag king of the Amalekites, and he killed all the people of Jerim with the edge of the sword.

καὶ συνέλαβεν τὸν Αγαγ βασιλέα Αμαληκ ζῶντα καὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν Ιεριμ ἀπέκτεινεν ἐν στόματι ῥομφαίας

9But Saul and all the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the vineyards, and everything good. They had no desire to utterly destroy them—only every despised and worthless thing; these they destroyed.

καὶ περιεποιήσατο Σαουλ καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς τὸν Αγαγ ζῶντα καὶ τὰ ἀγαθὰ τῶν ποιμνίων καὶ τῶν βουκολίων καὶ τῶν ἐδεσμάτων καὶ τῶν ἀμπελώνων καὶ πάντων τῶν ἀγαθῶν καὶ οὐκ ἐβούλετο αὐτὰ ἐξολεθρεῦσαι καὶ πᾶν ἔργον ἠτιμωμένον καὶ ἐξουδενωμένον ἐξωλέθρευσαν

10Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying,

καὶ ἐγενήθη ῥῆμα κυρίου πρὸς Σαμουηλ λέγων

11'I deeply regret I set up Saul to reign as king, for he turned back from following Me and has not kept My words.' And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night.

παρακέκλημαι ὅτι ἐβασίλευσα τὸν Σαουλ εἰς βασιλέα ὅτι ἀπέστρεψεν ἀπὸ ὄπισθέν μου καὶ τοὺς λόγους μου οὐκ ἐτήρησεν καὶ ἠθύμησεν Σαμουηλ καὶ ἐβόησεν πρὸς κύριον ὅλην τὴν νύκτα

12Samuel rose early and journeyed to a meeting with Israel in the early morning. Then it was reported to Samuel, saying, 'Saul has been in Carmel to gather help to himself.' Samuel turned the chariot and went down to Saul in Gilgal. And behold, Saul offered the whole burnt offering to the Lord, the first of the plunder brought out of Amalek.

καὶ ὤρθρισεν Σαμουηλ καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς ἀπάντησιν Ισραηλ πρωί καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Σαμουηλ λέγοντες ἥκει Σαουλ εἰς Κάρμηλον καὶ ἀνέστακεν αὐτῷ χεῖρα καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὸ ἅρμα καὶ κατέβη εἰς Γαλγαλα πρὸς Σαουλ καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ἀνέφερεν ὁλοκαύτωσιν τῷ κυρίῳ τὰ πρῶτα τῶν σκύλων ὧν ἤνεγκεν ἐξ Αμαληκ

13Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, 'Blessed are you by the Lord! I established all the many things the Lord said.'

καὶ παρεγένετο Σαμουηλ πρὸς Σαουλ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Σαουλ εὐλογητὸς σὺ τῷ κυρίῳ ἔστησα πάντα ὅσα ἐλάλησεν κύριος

14But Samuel said, 'What then is the sound of the flock in my ears, and the sound of oxen which I hear?'

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ καὶ τίς ἡ φωνὴ τοῦ ποιμνίου τούτου ἐν τοῖς ὠσίν μου καὶ φωνὴ τῶν βοῶν ὧν ἐγὼ ἀκούω

15And Saul said, 'I brought them from Amalek; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, in order that they may be sacrificed to the Lord your God. The rest I utterly destroyed.'

καὶ εἶπεν Σαουλ ἐξ Αμαληκ ἤνεγκα αὐτά ἃ περιεποιήσατο ὁ λαός τὰ κράτιστα τοῦ ποιμνίου καὶ τῶν βοῶν ὅπως τυθῇ τῷ κυρίῳ θεῷ σου καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ ἐξωλέθρευσα

16But Samuel said to Saul, 'Be quiet, and I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.' And Saul said to him, 'Speak on.'

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ πρὸς Σαουλ ἄνες καὶ ἀπαγγελῶ σοι ἃ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρός με τὴν νύκτα καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ λάλησον

17So Samuel said to Saul, 'Were you not small before Him, you who with a sceptre lead all the families of the tribes of Israel? Even so, the Lord still anointed you king over Israel.

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ πρὸς Σαουλ οὐχὶ μικρὸς σὺ εἶ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ἡγούμενος σκήπτρου φυλῆς Ισραηλ καὶ ἔχρισέν σε κύριος εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ισραηλ

18Now the Lord sent you off on a mission and said, 'Go and utterly destroy the sinners for me, the Amalekites, and fight against them until you consume them.'

καὶ ἀπέστειλέν σε κύριος ἐν ὁδῷ καὶ εἶπέν σοι πορεύθητι καὶ ἐξολέθρευσον τοὺς ἁμαρτάνοντας εἰς ἐμέ τὸν Αμαληκ καὶ πολεμήσεις αὐτούς ἕως συντελέσῃς αὐτούς

19Why did you not heed the voice of the Lord, but rushed down on the spoils and did evil before the Lord?'

καὶ ἵνα τί οὐκ ἤκουσας τῆς φωνῆς κυρίου ἀλλ᾿ ὥρμησας τοῦ θέσθαι ἐπὶ τὰ σκῦλα καὶ ἐποίησας τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον κυρίου

20And Saul said to Samuel, 'For the sake of the people, I listened to their voice, but I also went in the ways the Lord sent me. I brought back Agag king of Amalek and utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

καὶ εἶπεν Σαουλ πρὸς Σαμουηλ διὰ τὸ ἀκοῦσαί με τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ἐπορεύθην ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ᾗ ἀπέστειλέν με κύριος καὶ ἤγαγον τὸν Αγαγ βασιλέα Αμαληκ καὶ τὸν Αμαληκ ἐξωλέθρευσα

21But the people took of the plunder, the sheep and the oxen, the best of what should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice before the Lord our God in Gilgal.'

καὶ ἔλαβεν ὁ λαὸς τῶν σκύλων ποίμνια καὶ βουκόλια τὰ πρῶτα τοῦ ἐξολεθρεύματος θῦσαι ἐνώπιον κυρίου θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐν Γαλγαλοις

22Then Samuel said, 'If only the desired whole burnt offerings and desired sacrifices were equal to the Lord, as compared to one who heeds the voice of the Lord! Behold! Hearing is better than a good sacrifice and obedience than the fat of rams.

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ εἰ θελητὸν τῷ κυρίῳ ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ θυσίαι ὡς τὸ ἀκοῦσαι φωνῆς κυρίου ἰδοὺ ἀκοὴ ὑπὲρ θυσίαν ἀγαθὴ καὶ ἡ ἐπακρόασις ὑπὲρ στέαρ κριῶν

23That sin is one and the same as divination. Idols bring grief and pain. Because you rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord rejects you from remaining king over Israel.'

ὅτι ἁμαρτία οἰώνισμά ἐστιν ὀδύνην καὶ πόνους θεραφιν ἐπάγουσιν ὅτι ἐξουδένωσας τὸ ῥῆμα κυρίου καὶ ἐξουδενώσει σε κύριος μὴ εἶναι βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ισραηλ

24Then Saul said to Samuel, 'I sinned because I transgressed the word of the Lord and your word; for I feared the people and heeded their voice.

καὶ εἶπεν Σαουλ πρὸς Σαμουηλ ἡμάρτηκα ὅτι παρέβην τὸν λόγον κυρίου καὶ τὸ ῥῆμά σου ὅτι ἐφοβήθην τὸν λαὸν καὶ ἤκουσα τῆς φωνῆς αὐτῶν

25Now therefore, take away my sin and return with me, so that I can worship the Lord your God.'

καὶ νῦν ἆρον δὴ τὸ ἁμάρτημά μου καὶ ἀνάστρεψον μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ καὶ προσκυνήσω κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ σου

26But Samuel said to Saul, 'I will not return with you, because you rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord rejects you from remaining king over Israel.'

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ πρὸς Σαουλ οὐκ ἀναστρέφω μετὰ σοῦ ὅτι ἐξουδένωσας τὸ ῥῆμα κυρίου καὶ ἐξουδενώσει σε κύριος τοῦ μὴ εἶναι βασιλέα ἐπὶ τὸν Ισραηλ

27As Samuel turned his face to go away, Saul grasped the edge of his robe and tore it.

καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν Σαμουηλ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀπελθεῖν καὶ ἐκράτησεν Σαουλ τοῦ πτερυγίου τῆς διπλοΐδος αὐτοῦ καὶ διέρρηξεν αὐτό

28So Samuel said to him, 'The Lord has rent the kingdom of Israel from your hand today, and He will give it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.

καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Σαμουηλ διέρρηξεν κύριος τὴν βασιλείαν Ισραηλ ἐκ χειρός σου σήμερον καὶ δώσει αὐτὴν τῷ πλησίον σου τῷ ἀγαθῷ ὑπὲρ σέ

29And Israel will be divided in two, and God shall not turn back nor repent. For He is not like a man that He should repent.'

καὶ διαιρεθήσεται Ισραηλ εἰς δύο καὶ οὐκ ἀποστρέψει οὐδὲ μετανοήσει ὅτι οὐχ ὡς ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν τοῦ μετανοῆσαι αὐτός

30Then Saul said, 'I have sinned, but indeed honor me before the elders of Israel and my people. Return with me, and I will worship the Lord your God.'

καὶ εἶπεν Σαουλ ἡμάρτηκα ἀλλὰ δόξασόν με δὴ ἐνώπιον πρεσβυτέρων Ισραηλ καὶ ἐνώπιον λαοῦ μου καὶ ἀνάστρεψον μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ καὶ προσκυνήσω τῷ κυρίῳ θεῷ σου

31So Samuel turned back after Saul, and he worshiped the Lord.

καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν Σαμουηλ ὀπίσω Σαουλ καὶ προσεκύνησεν τῷ κυρίῳ

32Then Samuel said, 'Bring me Agag king of Amalek.' So Agag came to him trembling. And Agag said, 'Surely this is the bitter death.'

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ προσαγάγετέ μοι τὸν Αγαγ βασιλέα Αμαληκ καὶ προσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Αγαγ τρέμων καὶ εἶπεν Αγαγ εἰ οὕτως πικρὸς ὁ θάνατος

33And Samuel said to Agag, 'As your sword made women childless, so shall your mother be made childless among women.' So before the Lord, Samuel put Agag to death in Gilgal.

καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουηλ πρὸς Αγαγ καθότι ἠτέκνωσεν γυναῖκας ἡ ῥομφαία σου οὕτως ἀτεκνωθήσεται ἐκ γυναικῶν ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ ἔσφαξεν Σαμουηλ τὸν Αγαγ ἐνώπιον κυρίου ἐν Γαλγαλ

34Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house at Gibeah.

καὶ ἀπῆλθεν Σαμουηλ εἰς Αρμαθαιμ καὶ Σαουλ ἀνέβη εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ εἰς Γαβαα

35And Samuel did not go to see Saul again until the day of his death. Nevertheless, Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted that Saul reigned over Israel.

καὶ οὐ προσέθετο Σαμουηλ ἔτι ἰδεῖν τὸν Σαουλ ἕως ἡμέρας θανάτου αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐπένθει Σαμουηλ ἐπὶ Σαουλ καὶ κύριος μετεμελήθη ὅτι ἐβασίλευσεν τὸν Σαουλ ἐπὶ Ισραηλ
