Jeremiah 18

1The word that came from the Lord to Jeremiah, saying,

ὁ λόγος ὁ γενόμενος παρὰ κυρίου πρὸς Ιερεμιαν λέγων

2'Arise and go down to the potter's house. There you shall hear My words.'

ἀνάστηθι καὶ κατάβηθι εἰς οἶκον τοῦ κεραμέως καὶ ἐκεῖ ἀκούσῃ τοὺς λόγους μου

3Then I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was forming something of wet clay upon the stones.

καὶ κατέβην εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ κεραμέως καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ἐποίει ἔργον ἐπὶ τῶν λίθων

4The vessel he formed in his hands failed. So he again made himself another vessel as it pleased him to do.

καὶ διέπεσεν τὸ ἀγγεῖον ὃ αὐτὸς ἐποίει ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ καὶ πάλιν αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν αὐτὸ ἀγγεῖον ἕτερον καθὼς ἤρεσεν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ τοῦ ποιῆσαι

5Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων

6'Surely as this potter, am I not able to form you, O house of Israel? Behold, you are as the clay of the potter in My hands.

εἰ καθὼς ὁ κεραμεὺς οὗτος οὐ δυνήσομαι τοῦ ποιῆσαι ὑμᾶς οἶκος Ισραηλ ἰδοὺ ὡς ὁ πηλὸς τοῦ κεραμέως ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐν ταῖς χερσίν μου

7I shall declare a decree concerning a nation or a kingdom, to remove and destroy them.

πέρας λαλήσω ἐπὶ ἔθνος ἢ ἐπὶ βασιλείαν τοῦ ἐξᾶραι αὐτοὺς καὶ τοῦ ἀπολλύειν

8But if this nation turns away from all their evils, then I will repent concerning the calamities I considered to do to them.

καὶ ἐπιστραφῇ τὸ ἔθνος ἐκεῖνο ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν κακῶν αὐτῶν καὶ μετανοήσω περὶ τῶν κακῶν ὧν ἐλογισάμην τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς

9If I shall declare a decree concerning a nation or a kingdom to rebuild and to plant it,

καὶ πέρας λαλήσω ἐπὶ ἔθνος καὶ ἐπὶ βασιλείαν τοῦ ἀνοικοδομεῖσθαι καὶ τοῦ καταφυτεύεσθαι

10but they do evils in My sight so as not to hear My voice, then I will repent concerning the good I spoke to do for them.

καὶ ποιήσωσιν τὰ πονηρὰ ἐναντίον μου τοῦ μὴ ἀκούειν τῆς φωνῆς μου καὶ μετανοήσω περὶ τῶν ἀγαθῶν ὧν ἐλάλησα τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς

11'Therefore now, speak to the men of Judah and those inhabiting Jerusalem for Me, saying, 'Behold, I form calamities and devise a plan against you. Therefore, let each turn away from his way of evil and do good in your practices.' '

καὶ νῦν εἰπὸν πρὸς ἄνδρας Ιουδα καὶ πρὸς τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ιερουσαλημ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ πλάσσω ἐφ᾿ ὑμᾶς κακὰ καὶ λογίζομαι ἐφ᾿ ὑμᾶς λογισμόν ἀποστραφήτω δὴ ἕκαστος ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς καὶ καλλίονα ποιήσετε τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα ὑμῶν

12But they said, 'We will act like men and walk after our inclinations, and each one of us will do the evils pleasing to his heart.'

καὶ εἶπαν ἀνδριούμεθα ὅτι ὀπίσω τῶν ἀποστροφῶν ἡμῶν πορευσόμεθα καὶ ἕκαστος τὰ ἀρεστὰ τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς ποιήσομεν

13Therefore thus says the Lord: 'Ask now of the Gentiles, 'Who has heard of such exceedingly horrible things as what the virgin of Israel did?'

διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐρωτήσατε δὴ ἐν ἔθνεσιν τίς ἤκουσεν τοιαῦτα φρικτά ἃ ἐποίησεν σφόδρα παρθένος Ισραηλ

14Will nourishing streams of water not flow from rocks or snow from Lebanon? Will water turn aside when violently pushed by the wind?

μὴ ἐκλείψουσιν ἀπὸ πέτρας μαστοὶ ἢ χιὼν ἀπὸ τοῦ Λιβάνου μὴ ἐκκλινεῖ ὕδωρ βιαίως ἀνέμῳ φερόμενον

15For My people have forgotten Me. They offer incense in vain and are sick in their ways, leaving the ancient ways to embark on impassable paths,

ὅτι ἐπελάθοντό μου ὁ λαός μου εἰς κενὸν ἐθυμίασαν καὶ ἀσθενήσουσιν ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν σχοίνους αἰωνίους τοῦ ἐπιβῆναι τρίβους οὐκ ἔχοντας ὁδὸν εἰς πορείαν

16so as to appoint their land for destruction and a perpetual hissing. All who pass through it shall be amazed and shake their head.

τοῦ τάξαι τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν εἰς ἀφανισμὸν καὶ σύριγμα αἰώνιον πάντες οἱ διαπορευόμενοι δι᾿ αὐτῆς ἐκστήσονται καὶ κινήσουσιν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν

17I will scatter them like a burning wind before the face of their enemies. I will show them the day of their destruction.'

ὡς ἄνεμον καύσωνα διασπερῶ αὐτοὺς κατὰ πρόσωπον ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν δείξω αὐτοῖς ἡμέραν ἀπωλείας αὐτῶν

18Then they said, 'Come and let us devise a plan against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the intelligent, nor a word from the prophet. Come and let us strike him down with the tongue, and we will hear all his words.'

καὶ εἶπαν δεῦτε λογισώμεθα ἐπὶ Ιερεμιαν λογισμόν ὅτι οὐκ ἀπολεῖται νόμος ἀπὸ ἱερέως καὶ βουλὴ ἀπὸ συνετοῦ καὶ λόγος ἀπὸ προφήτου δεῦτε καὶ πατάξωμεν αὐτὸν ἐν γλώσσῃ καὶ ἀκουσόμεθα πάντας τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ

19Lord, hear me, and give ear to the voice of my plea for what is right.

εἰσάκουσόν μου κύριε καὶ εἰσάκουσον τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ δικαιώματός μου

20Surely evil things are repaid for good things; for they spoke words against my soul and concealed punishment meant for me. But remember, I stood before You to speak good things for them, so as to turn away Your wrath from them.

εἰ ἀνταποδίδοται ἀντὶ ἀγαθῶν κακά ὅτι συνελάλησαν ῥήματα κατὰ τῆς ψυχῆς μου καὶ τὴν κόλασιν αὐτῶν ἔκρυψάν μοι μνήσθητι ἑστηκότος μου κατὰ πρόσωπόν σου τοῦ λαλῆσαι ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀγαθὰ τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι τὸν θυμόν σου ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν

21Therefore give their sons to the famine and gather them to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widowed, and let their men be put to death. In war, let their young men fall by the sword.

διὰ τοῦτο δὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτῶν εἰς λιμὸν καὶ ἄθροισον αὐτοὺς εἰς χεῖρας μαχαίρας γενέσθωσαν αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν ἄτεκνοι καὶ χῆραι καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτῶν γενέσθωσαν ἀνῃρημένοι θανάτῳ καὶ οἱ νεανίσκοι αὐτῶν πεπτωκότες μαχαίρᾳ ἐν πολέμῳ

22Let a cry be heard in their houses, for You shall bring robbers upon them suddenly, because they formed a plan to take me and hid snares against me.

γενηθήτω κραυγὴ ἐν ταῖς οἰκίαις αὐτῶν ἐπάξεις ἐπ᾿ αὐτοὺς λῃστὰς ἄφνω ὅτι ἐνεχείρησαν λόγον εἰς σύλλημψίν μου καὶ παγίδας ἔκρυψαν ἐπ᾿ ἐμέ

23O Lord, You know all their counsel against me so as to put me to death. Do not let their wrongdoings go unpunished, nor blot out their sins from before Your face. Let their weakness come before You, and in the time of Your anger deal with them.

καὶ σύ κύριε ἔγνως ἅπασαν τὴν βουλὴν αὐτῶν ἐπ᾿ ἐμὲ εἰς θάνατον μὴ ἀθῳώσῃς τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν ἀπὸ προσώπου σου μὴ ἐξαλείψῃς γενέσθω ἡ ἀσθένεια αὐτῶν ἐναντίον σου ἐν καιρῷ θυμοῦ σου ποίησον ἐν αὐτοῖς
