1 Maccabees 13

1Now Simon learned that Trypho had assembled a huge army to march on the land of Judah and crush it.

καὶ ἤκουσεν Σιμων ὅτι συνήγαγεν Τρύφων δύναμιν πολλὴν τοῦ ἐλθεῖν εἰς γῆν Ιουδα καὶ ἐκτρῖψαι αὐτήν

2He saw the people were trembling with fear, so he went to Jerusalem and gathered everyone together.

καὶ εἶδεν τὸν λαόν ὅτι ἔντρομός ἐστιν καὶ ἔκφοβος καὶ ἀνέβη εἰς Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἤθροισεν τὸν λαὸν

3He encouraged them, saying, 'You know what my brothers and I and my father's house have done concerning the laws and the sanctuary. You know, too, the wars and the crises we have seen.

καὶ παρεκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς αὐτοὶ οἴδατε ὅσα ἐγὼ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου καὶ ὁ οἶκος τοῦ πατρός μου ἐποιήσαμεν περὶ τῶν νόμων καὶ τῶν ἁγίων καὶ τοὺς πολέμους καὶ τὰς στενοχωρίας ἃς εἴδομεν

4This is why all my brothers perished, all for the sake of Israel, and only I am left.

τούτου χάριν ἀπώλοντο οἱ ἀδελφοί μου πάντες χάριν τοῦ Ισραηλ καὶ κατελείφθην ἐγὼ μόνος

5Now may my life never be safeguarded in time of trouble, for I am in no way better than my brothers.

καὶ νῦν μή μοι γένοιτο φείσασθαί μου τῆς ψυχῆς ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ θλίψεως οὐ γάρ εἰμι κρείσσων τῶν ἀδελφῶν μου

6Thus I will avenge my nation and this sanctuary and your wives and children, for all the nations have hatefully gathered to destroy us.'

πλὴν ἐκδικήσω περὶ τοῦ ἔθνους μου καὶ περὶ τῶν ἁγίων καὶ περὶ τῶν γυναικῶν καὶ τέκνων ὑμῶν ὅτι συνήχθησαν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκτρῖψαι ἡμᾶς ἔχθρας χάριν

7Thus he rekindled the spirit of the people when they heard these words.

καὶ ἀνεζωπύρησεν τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ λαοῦ ἅμα τοῦ ἀκοῦσαι τῶν λόγων τούτων

8They responded with a loud voice, saying, 'You lead us in place of Judas and your brother.

καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγοντες σὺ εἶ ἡμῶν ἡγούμενος ἀντὶ Ιουδου καὶ Ιωναθου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου

9Fight our wars, and we will do everything you tell us.'

πολέμησον τὸν πόλεμον ἡμῶν καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἂν εἴπῃς ἡμῖν ποιήσομεν

10So he gathered all the men of fighting age and rushed to finish the walls of Jerusalem; he fortified the city on all sides.

καὶ συνήγαγεν πάντας τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς πολεμιστὰς καὶ ἐτάχυνεν τοῦ τελέσαι τὰ τείχη Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ὠχύρωσεν αὐτὴν κυκλόθεν

11Then he sent Jonathan son of Absalom with a sizable army to Joppa, and he drove out its people and remained there.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ιωναθαν τὸν τοῦ Αψαλωμου καὶ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ δύναμιν ἱκανὴν εἰς Ιοππην καὶ ἐξέβαλεν τοὺς ὄντας ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ ἐν αὐτῇ

12Meanwhile, Trypho left from Ptolemais with a large force to come into the land of Judah. Jonathan accompanied him under guard.

καὶ ἀπῆρεν Τρύφων ἀπὸ Πτολεμαίδος μετὰ δυνάμεως πολλῆς ἐλθεῖν εἰς γῆν Ιουδα καὶ Ιωναθαν μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐν φυλακῇ

13Now Simon set up camp in Adida, opposite the plain.

Σιμων δὲ παρενέβαλεν ἐν Αδιδοις κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ πεδίου

14When Trypho heard that Simon had risen up in place of his brother Jonathan and was about to face him in battle, he sent men to him, saying,

καὶ ἐπέγνω Τρύφων ὅτι ἀνέστη Σιμων ἀντὶ Ιωναθου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅτι συνάπτειν αὐτῷ μέλλει πόλεμον καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν πρέσβεις λέγων

15'We are detaining your brother Jonathan because of the silver he owed the royal treasury and for which he is responsible.

περὶ ἀργυρίου οὗ ὤφειλεν Ιωναθαν ὁ ἀδελφός σου εἰς τὸ βασιλικὸν δι᾿ ἃς εἶχεν χρείας συνέχομεν αὐτόν

16Now send a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, that when he is freed he will not rise up against us; then we will free him.'

καὶ νῦν ἀπόστειλον ἀργυρίου τάλαντα ἑκατὸν καὶ δύο τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ ὅμηρα ὅπως μὴ ἀφεθεὶς ἀποστατήσῃ ἀφ᾿ ἡμῶν καὶ ἀφήσομεν αὐτόν

17Simon sensed they were speaking to him deceitfully, but he sent for the silver and the sons, lest he arouse great hostility among the people, for they might say,

καὶ ἔγνω Σιμων ὅτι δόλῳ λαλοῦσιν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ πέμπει τοῦ λαβεῖν τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τὰ παιδάρια μήποτε ἔχθραν ἄρῃ μεγάλην πρὸς τὸν λαὸν

18'Because Simon did not give him the money and the sons, Jonathan perished.'

λέγοντες ὅτι οὐκ ἀπέστειλα αὐτῷ τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τὰ παιδάρια ἀπώλετο

19Then he sent the sons and the hundred talents. But Trypho acted with deceit and would not free Jonathan.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τὰ παιδάρια καὶ τὰ ἑκατὸν τάλαντα καὶ διεψεύσατο καὶ οὐκ ἀφῆκεν τὸν Ιωναθαν

20Later, Trypho arrived to invade Judah to destroy it, and they circled around the road leading to Adora. But Simon and his army advanced along opposite him every place he went.

καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἦλθεν Τρύφων τοῦ ἐμβατεῦσαι εἰς τὴν χώραν καὶ ἐκτρῖψαι αὐτήν καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν ὁδὸν τὴν εἰς Αδωρα καὶ Σιμων καὶ ἡ παρεμβολὴ αὐτοῦ ἀντιπαρῆγεν αὐτῷ εἰς πάντα τόπον οὗ ἂν ἐπορεύετο

21Then men from the citadel sent ambassadors to Trypho, urging him to come to them through the desert and send food for them.

οἱ δὲ ἐκ τῆς ἄκρας ἀπέστελλον πρὸς Τρύφωνα πρεσβευτὰς κατασπεύδοντας αὐτὸν τοῦ ἐλθεῖν πρὸς αὐτοὺς διὰ τῆς ἐρήμου καὶ ἀποστεῖλαι αὐτοῖς τροφάς

22Trypho then prepared all his cavalry to come, but there was a heavy snowfall that night, and he could not march through the deep snow. Instead, he departed and went into Gilead.

καὶ ἡτοίμασεν Τρύφων πᾶσαν τὴν ἵππον αὐτοῦ ἐλθεῖν καὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ἐκείνῃ ἦν χιὼν πολλὴ σφόδρα καὶ οὐκ ἦλθεν διὰ τὴν χιόνα καὶ ἀπῆρεν καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλααδῖτιν

23But when he came near Bascama, he slew Jonathan and buried him there.

ὡς δὲ ἤγγισεν τῆς Βασκαμα ἀπέκτεινεν τὸν Ιωναθαν καὶ ἐτάφη ἐκεῖ

24Then Trypho turned and went to his own country.

καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Τρύφων καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ

25Simon sent men and gathered the remains of his brother Jonathan and buried him in Modein, the city of his fathers.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σιμων καὶ ἔλαβεν τὰ ὀστᾶ Ιωναθου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθαψεν αὐτὸν ἐν Μωδεϊν πόλει τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ

26All Israel mourned him with great lament for many days.

καὶ ἐκόψαντο αὐτὸν πᾶς Ισραηλ κοπετὸν μέγαν καὶ ἐπένθησαν αὐτὸν ἡμέρας πολλάς

27Simon also built up the tomb of his father and brothers with polished stone in front and back, making it high enough to be seen.

καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν Σιμων ἐπὶ τὸν τάφον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ὕψωσεν αὐτὸν τῇ ὁράσει λίθῳ ξεστῷ ἐκ τῶν ὄπισθεν καὶ ἔμπροσθεν

28He then built seven pyramids, one opposite the other, for his father and his mother and his four brothers.

καὶ ἔστησεν ἑπτὰ πυραμίδας μίαν κατέναντι τῆς μιᾶς τῷ πατρὶ καὶ τῇ μητρὶ καὶ τοῖς τέσσαρσιν ἀδελφοῖς

29Around these pyramids he made engines of war, building massive pillars around them, and upon these pillars he placed suits of armor for a perpetual memorial, and alongside the suits of armor he made carved ships, so they could be seen by everyone sailing the sea.

καὶ ταύταις ἐποίησεν μηχανήματα περιθεὶς στύλους μεγάλους καὶ ἐποίησεν ἐπὶ τοῖς στύλοις πανοπλίας εἰς ὄνομα αἰώνιον καὶ παρὰ ταῖς πανοπλίαις πλοῖα ἐγγεγλυμμένα εἰς τὸ θεωρεῖσθαι ὑπὸ πάντων τῶν πλεόντων τὴν θάλασσαν

30This tomb which he made in Modein exists until this day.

οὗτος ὁ τάφος ὃν ἐποίησεν ἐν Μωδεϊν ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης

31Now Trypho also dealt wickedly with young Antiochus the king and murdered him.

ὁ δὲ Τρύφων ἐπορεύετο δόλῳ μετὰ Ἀντιόχου τοῦ βασιλέως τοῦ νεωτέρου καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν

32Then he became king in his place and wore the crown of Asia, bringing great adversity to the land.

καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἀντ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ περιέθετο τὸ διάδημα τῆς Ἀσίας καὶ ἐποίησεν πληγὴν μεγάλην ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς

33Simon thus strengthened the fortresses in Judea, surrounding them with high towers and with thick walls and gates and bolts, storing provisions in the fortresses.

καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν Σιμων τὰ ὀχυρώματα τῆς Ιουδαίας καὶ περιετείχισεν πύργοις ὑψηλοῖς καὶ τείχεσιν μεγάλοις καὶ πύλαις καὶ μοχλοῖς καὶ ἔθετο βρώματα ἐν τοῖς ὀχυρώμασιν

34Also Simon selected men and sent them to King Demetrius to bring relief for the country, for all Trypho's actions were violent.

καὶ ἐπέλεξεν Σιμων ἄνδρας καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς Δημήτριον τὸν βασιλέα τοῦ ποιῆσαι ἄφεσιν τῇ χώρᾳ ὅτι πᾶσαι αἱ πράξεις Τρύφωνος ἦσαν ἁρπαγαί

35Then the king sent him a positive answer and wrote him this letter:

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτῷ Δημήτριος ὁ βασιλεὺς κατὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους καὶ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ καὶ ἔγραψεν αὐτῷ ἐπιστολὴν τοιαύτην

36'King Demetrius to Simon the high priest, friend of kings, and to the elders and the Jewish nation, greetings.

βασιλεὺς Δημήτριος Σιμωνι ἀρχιερεῖ καὶ φίλῳ βασιλέων καὶ πρεσβυτέροις καὶ ἔθνει Ιουδαίων χαίρειν

37We received the crown of gold and the palm branch you sent. We are ready to declare general peace with you and to order our officials to cancel your taxes.

τὸν στέφανον τὸν χρυσοῦν καὶ τὴν βαΐνην ἣν ἀπεστείλατε κεκομίσμεθα καὶ ἕτοιμοί ἐσμεν τοῦ ποιεῖν ὑμῖν εἰρήνην μεγάλην καὶ γράφειν τοῖς ἐπὶ τῶν χρειῶν τοῦ ἀφιέναι ὑμῖν τὰ ἀφέματα

38Indeed, all the grants we made to you stay intact, and let the fortresses you built remain in your keeping.

καὶ ὅσα ἐστήσαμεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἕστηκεν καὶ τὰ ὀχυρώματα ἃ ᾠκοδομήσατε ὑπαρχέτω ὑμῖν

39We also forgive the mistakes committed up to the present day as well, and remove the crown tax you owe. If any other tax has been exacted in Jerusalem, let it be no longer exacted.

ἀφίεμεν δὲ ἀγνοήματα καὶ τὰ ἁμαρτήματα ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν στέφανον ὃν ὠφείλετε καὶ εἴ τι ἄλλο ἐτελωνεῖτο ἐν Ιερουσαλημ μηκέτι τελωνείσθω

40If some of your men are suited for enrollment in our bodyguard, let them be enrolled. And may there be peace among us.'

καὶ εἴ τινες ἐπιτήδειοι ὑμῶν γραφῆναι εἰς τοὺς περὶ ἡμᾶς ἐγγραφέσθωσαν καὶ γινέσθω ἀνὰ μέσον ἡμῶν εἰρήνη

41The yoke of the Gentiles was lifted from Israel in the one hundred and seventieth year.

ἔτους ἑβδομηκοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ ἤρθη ὁ ζυγὸς τῶν ἐθνῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ Ισραηλ

42Then the people began to record in their letters and contracts, 'In the first year of Simon, the great high priest and commander and ruler of the Jews.'

καὶ ἤρξατο ὁ λαὸς γράφειν ἐν ταῖς συγγραφαῖς καὶ συναλλάγμασιν ἔτους πρώτου ἐπὶ Σιμωνος ἀρχιερέως μεγάλου καὶ στρατηγοῦ καὶ ἡγουμένου Ιουδαίων

43In those days Simon camped at Gazara, surrounding it with soldiers. He also built an engine of war, brought it to the city, and struck and seized one tower.

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις παρενέβαλεν ἐπὶ Γαζαρα καὶ ἐκύκλωσεν αὐτὴν παρεμβολαῖς καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑλεόπολιν καὶ προσήγαγεν τῇ πόλει καὶ ἐπάταξεν πύργον ἕνα καὶ κατελάβετο

44Then the men in the siege engine jumped out and ran into the city, and there was a great commotion in Gazara.

καὶ ἐξήλλοντο οἱ ἐν τῇ ἑλεοπόλει εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἐγένετο κίνημα μέγα ἐν τῇ πόλει

45The men in the city also climbed up onto the wall with their wives and children, tearing their clothes and crying with a loud voice, pleading with Simon to make peace with them.

καὶ ἀνέβησαν οἱ ἐν τῇ πόλει σὺν γυναιξὶν καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις ἐπὶ τὸ τεῖχος διερρηχότες τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν καὶ ἐβόησαν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀξιοῦντες Σιμωνα δεξιὰς αὐτοῖς δοῦναι

46They said, 'Treat us not according to our evil deeds, but according to your mercy.'

καὶ εἶπαν μὴ ἡμῖν χρήσῃ κατὰ τὰς πονηρίας ἡμῶν ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ ἔλεός σου

47So Simon made an agreement with them and ceased waging war against them. But he cast them out of the city and purified the houses that contained idols. Thus he entered Gazara with hymns and blessings.

καὶ συνελύθη αὐτοῖς Σιμων καὶ οὐκ ἐπολέμησεν αὐτούς καὶ ἐξέβαλεν αὐτοὺς ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἐκαθάρισεν τὰς οἰκίας ἐν αἷς ἦν τὰ εἴδωλα καὶ οὕτως εἰσῆλθεν εἰς αὐτὴν ὑμνῶν καὶ εὐλογῶν

48He also cast out all uncleanness from it and settled men there who would keep the law. Then he fortified it and built a dwelling there for himself.

καὶ ἐξέβαλεν ἐξ αὐτῆς πᾶσαν ἀκαθαρσίαν καὶ κατῴκισεν ἐν αὐτῇ ἄνδρας οἵτινες τὸν νόμον ποιήσωσιν καὶ προσωχύρωσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἑαυτῷ ἐν αὐτῇ οἴκησιν

49But the men in the citadel at Jerusalem were prevented from coming and going in the region to buy and to sell. So they were extremely hungry; even the strong among them were dying of hunger.

οἱ δὲ ἐκ τῆς ἄκρας ἐν Ιερουσαλημ ἐκωλύοντο ἐκπορεύεσθαι καὶ εἰσπορεύεσθαι εἰς τὴν χώραν ἀγοράζειν καὶ πωλεῖν καὶ ἐπείνασαν σφόδρα καὶ ἀπώλοντο ἐξ αὐτῶν ἱκανοὶ τῷ λιμῷ

50When they called out to Simon to be at peace with them, he did so and then cast them out from there, purifying the citadel from its defilements.

καὶ ἐβόησαν πρὸς Σιμωνα δεξιὰς λαβεῖν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐξέβαλεν αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖθεν καὶ ἐκαθάρισεν τὴν ἄκραν ἀπὸ τῶν μιασμάτων

51They entered it on the twenty-third day of the second month of the one hundred and seventy-first year with praise and palm branches, and with lyres, cymbals, and stringed instruments, and with hymns and songs, because a great enemy had been defeated and cast out of Israel.

καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς αὐτὴν τῇ τρίτῃ καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ δευτέρου μηνὸς ἔτους πρώτου καὶ ἑβδομηκοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ μετὰ αἰνέσεως καὶ βαΐων καὶ ἐν κινύραις καὶ ἐν κυμβάλοις καὶ ἐν νάβλαις καὶ ἐν ὕμνοις καὶ ἐν ᾠδαῖς ὅτι συνετρίβη ἐχθρὸς μέγας ἐξ Ισραηλ

52Thus Simon ordered that each year they should commemorate this day with jubilation. When the temple mount was fortified along with the citadel, he himself and his men lived there.

καὶ ἔστησεν κατ᾿ ἐνιαυτὸν τοῦ ἄγειν τὴν ἡμέραν ταύτην μετὰ εὐφροσύνης καὶ προσωχύρωσεν τὸ ὄρος τοῦ ἱεροῦ τὸ παρὰ τὴν ἄκραν καὶ ᾤκει ἐκεῖ αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ

53Then Simon noted that his son John had reached adulthood. So he appointed him commander of all the army, and he lived in Gazara.

καὶ εἶδεν Σιμων τὸν Ιωαννην υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἀνήρ ἐστιν καὶ ἔθετο αὐτὸν ἡγούμενον τῶν δυνάμεων πασῶν καὶ ᾤκει ἐν Γαζαροις
