Joshua 7

1But the children of Israel committed a great offense, for they kept back for themselves something from what was accursed. Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something from what was accursed, and the Lord was very angry with the sons of Israel.

καὶ ἐπλημμέλησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ πλημμέλειαν μεγάλην καὶ ἐνοσφίσαντο ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀναθέματος καὶ ἔλαβεν Αχαρ υἱὸς Χαρμι υἱοῦ Ζαμβρι υἱοῦ Ζαρα ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ιουδα ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀναθέματος καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ κύριος τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ

2Then Joshua sent men into Ai, which is near Bethel, saying, 'Spy out Ai.' So the men went up, and spied out Ai.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰησοῦς ἄνδρας εἰς Γαι ἥ ἐστιν κατὰ Βαιθηλ λέγων κατασκέψασθε τὴν Γαι καὶ ἀνέβησαν οἱ ἄνδρες καὶ κατεσκέψαντο τὴν Γαι

3After this, they returned to Joshua and said to him, 'Let not all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and force the city to surrender. Do not lead all the people there, for they are few in number.'

καὶ ἀνέστρεψαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν μὴ ἀναβήτω πᾶς ὁ λαός ἀλλ᾿ ὡς δισχίλιοι ἢ τρισχίλιοι ἄνδρες ἀναβήτωσαν καὶ ἐκπολιορκησάτωσαν τὴν πόλιν μὴ ἀναγάγῃς ἐκεῖ τὸν λαὸν πάντα ὀλίγοι γάρ εἰσιν

4Thus, about three thousand men went up, but they fled from the face of the men of Ai.

καὶ ἀνέβησαν ὡσεὶ τρισχίλιοι ἄνδρες καὶ ἔφυγον ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν ἀνδρῶν Γαι

5The men of Ai killed thirty-six of them and pursued them from the gate; and they crushed them on the steep slope. So the hearts of the people were terrified and became as water.

καὶ ἀπέκτειναν ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν ἄνδρες Γαι εἰς τριάκοντα καὶ ἓξ ἄνδρας καὶ κατεδίωξαν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς πύλης καὶ συνέτριψαν αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τοῦ καταφεροῦς καὶ ἐπτοήθη ἡ καρδία τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ἐγένετο ὥσπερ ὕδωρ

6Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the ground before the face of the Lord until evening, both he and the elders of Israel, and they put dust on their heads.

καὶ διέρρηξεν Ἰησοῦς τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔπεσεν Ἰησοῦς ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐναντίον κυρίου ἕως ἑσπέρας αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ισραηλ καὶ ἐπεβάλοντο χοῦν ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν

7Joshua said, 'I beseech You, O Lord. Why did Your servant lead this people over Jordan to deliver them to the Amorite to destroy us? If only we had remained and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan.

καὶ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς δέομαι κύριε ἵνα τί διεβίβασεν ὁ παῖς σου τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον τὸν Ιορδάνην παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν τῷ Αμορραίῳ ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς καὶ εἰ κατεμείναμεν καὶ κατῳκίσθημεν παρὰ τὸν Ιορδάνην

8What shall I say, since Israel turned his back before his enemy?

καὶ τί ἐρῶ ἐπεὶ μετέβαλεν Ισραηλ αὐχένα ἀπέναντι τοῦ ἐχθροῦ αὐτοῦ

9When the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land hear this, they will surround us and destroy us from off the land. Then what will You do for Your great name?'

καὶ ἀκούσας ὁ Χαναναῖος καὶ πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν περικυκλώσουσιν ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐκτρίψουσιν ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ τί ποιήσεις τὸ ὄνομά σου τὸ μέγα

10So the Lord said to Joshua, 'Rise up. Why have you fallen upon your face?

καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Ἰησοῦν ἀνάστηθι ἵνα τί τοῦτο σὺ πέπτωκας ἐπὶ πρόσωπόν σου

11The people sinned and transgressed the covenant I made with them; for they stole something from what was accursed and put it among their goods.

ἡμάρτηκεν ὁ λαὸς καὶ παρέβη τὴν διαθήκην ἣν διεθέμην πρὸς αὐτούς καὶ κλέψαντες ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀναθέματος ἐνέβαλον εἰς τὰ σκεύη αὐτῶν

12So the sons of Israel will be unable to stand against the face of their enemies. They will turn their backs before their enemies, because they are accursed; and I will not be with you until you remove the accursed thing from among you.

οὐ μὴ δύνωνται οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ ὑποστῆναι κατὰ πρόσωπον τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν αὐχένα ἐπιστρέψουσιν ἔναντι τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν ὅτι ἐγενήθησαν ἀνάθεμα οὐ προσθήσω ἔτι εἶναι μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν ἐὰν μὴ ἐξάρητε τὸ ἀνάθεμα ἐξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν

13Rise up and sanctify the people; and tell them to be sanctified for tomorrow. Thus says the Lord God of Israel, 'The accursed thing is among you. You shall not be able to stand against your enemies until you remove the accursed thing from among you.

ἀναστὰς ἁγίασον τὸν λαὸν καὶ εἰπὸν ἁγιασθῆναι εἰς αὔριον τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ τὸ ἀνάθεμα ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστιν οὐ δυνήσεσθε ἀντιστῆναι ἀπέναντι τῶν ἐχθρῶν ὑμῶν ἕως ἂν ἐξάρητε τὸ ἀνάθεμα ἐξ ὑμῶν

14In the morning you shall all be gathered together by your tribes, and it shall come to pass that the tribe the Lord points out, you shall bring forward family by family. Then the family the Lord points out, you shall bring household by household. After this, the household the Lord points out, you shall bring man by man.

καὶ συναχθήσεσθε πάντες τὸ πρωὶ κατὰ φυλάς καὶ ἔσται ἡ φυλή ἣν ἂν δείξῃ κύριος προσάξετε κατὰ δήμους καὶ τὸν δῆμον ὃν ἐὰν δείξῃ κύριος προσάξετε κατ᾿ οἶκον καὶ τὸν οἶκον ὃν ἐὰν δείξῃ κύριος προσάξετε κατ᾿ ἄνδρα

15So whoever is pointed out, he shall be burned with fire along with whatever he has, because he transgressed the covenant of the Lord and brought lawlessness in Israel.' '

καὶ ὃς ἂν ἐνδειχθῇ κατακαυθήσεται ἐν πυρὶ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτῷ ὅτι παρέβη τὴν διαθήκην κυρίου καὶ ἐποίησεν ἀνόμημα ἐν Ισραηλ

16Now Joshua arose early in the morning and gathered the people tribe by tribe; and the tribe of Judah was pointed out.

καὶ ὤρθρισεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ προσήγαγεν τὸν λαὸν κατὰ φυλάς καὶ ἐνεδείχθη ἡ φυλὴ Ιουδα

17Then he brought family by family, and the family of Zara was pointed out. After this, he brought man by man,

καὶ προσήχθη κατὰ δήμους καὶ ἐνεδείχθη δῆμος ὁ Ζαραϊ καὶ προσήχθη κατὰ ἄνδρα

18and Achan, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, was pointed out.

καὶ ἐνεδείχθη Αχαρ υἱὸς Ζαμβρι υἱοῦ Ζαρα

19Thus, Joshua said to Achan, 'Give glory to the Lord God of Israel today and make confession. Tell me what you did and hide nothing from me.'

καὶ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς τῷ Αχαρ δὸς δόξαν σήμερον τῷ κυρίῳ θεῷ Ισραηλ καὶ δὸς τὴν ἐξομολόγησιν καὶ ἀνάγγειλόν μοι τί ἐποίησας καὶ μὴ κρύψῃς ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ

20So Achan answered Joshua and said, 'Truly, I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel. Thus and thus I did:

καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Αχαρ τῷ Ἰησοῖ καὶ εἶπεν ἀληθῶς ἥμαρτον ἐναντίον κυρίου θεοῦ Ισραηλ οὕτως καὶ οὕτως ἐποίησα

21I saw a beautiful, multicolored garment in the spoil and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of fifty shekels of gold. I desired them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the ground in my tent, and the silver is concealed under them.'

εἶδον ἐν τῇ προνομῇ ψιλὴν ποικίλην καλὴν καὶ διακόσια δίδραχμα ἀργυρίου καὶ γλῶσσαν μίαν χρυσῆν πεντήκοντα διδράχμων καὶ ἐνθυμηθεὶς αὐτῶν ἔλαβον καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὰ ἐγκέκρυπται ἐν τῇ γῇ ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ μου καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον κέκρυπται ὑποκάτω αὐτῶν

22Then Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent in the camp. These things were hidden in the tent, with the silver under them.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰησοῦς ἀγγέλους καὶ ἔδραμον εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν καὶ ταῦτα ἦν ἐγκεκρυμμένα εἰς τὴν σκηνήν καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον ὑποκάτω αὐτῶν

23They carried them from the tent; and they brought them to Joshua and the elders of Israel and placed them before the Lord.

καὶ ἐξήνεγκαν αὐτὰ ἐκ τῆς σκηνῆς καὶ ἤνεγκαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους Ισραηλ καὶ ἔθηκαν αὐτὰ ἔναντι κυρίου

24After this, Joshua took Achan the son of Zerah and led him up to the Valley of Achor, along with his sons and daughters, and his calves, and all his donkeys and sheep, and his tent and all his belongings. Thus he led them all to the Valley of Achor.

καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰησοῦς τὸν Αχαρ υἱὸν Ζαρα καὶ ἀνήγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς φάραγγα Αχωρ καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς θυγατέρας αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς μόσχους αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ὑποζύγια αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντα τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντα τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνήγαγεν αὐτοὺς εἰς Εμεκαχωρ

25And Joshua said to Achan, 'Why did you destroy us? May the Lord destroy you this very day.' Then all Israel stoned him with stones;

καὶ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς τῷ Αχαρ τί ὠλέθρευσας ἡμᾶς ἐξολεθρεύσαι σε κύριος καθὰ καὶ σήμερον καὶ ἐλιθοβόλησαν αὐτὸν λίθοις πᾶς Ισραηλ

26and they put over him a great heap of stones, and the Lord ceased from the wrath of his anger. Therefore and to this day, the place is named the Valley of Achor.

καὶ ἐπέστησαν αὐτῷ σωρὸν λίθων μέγαν καὶ ἐπαύσατο κύριος τοῦ θυμοῦ τῆς ὀργῆς διὰ τοῦτο ἐπωνόμασεν αὐτὸ Εμεκαχωρ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης
