Deuteronomy 2

1So we turned and journeyed on the desert road along the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we encircled Mount Seir for many days.

καὶ ἐπιστραφέντες ἀπήραμεν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ὁδὸν θάλασσαν ἐρυθράν ὃν τρόπον ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρός με καὶ ἐκυκλώσαμεν τὸ ὄρος τὸ Σηιρ ἡμέρας πολλάς

2Then the Lord spoke to me, saying,

καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με

3'Let your encircling of this mountain be sufficient; therefore, turn northward.

ἱκανούσθω ὑμῖν κυκλοῦν τὸ ὄρος τοῦτο ἐπιστράφητε οὖν ἐπὶ βορρᾶν

4Also command the people, saying, 'You are about to pass through the boundaries of your brethren, the sons of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you and will be in exceeding dread of you.

καὶ τῷ λαῷ ἔντειλαι λέγων ὑμεῖς παραπορεύεσθε διὰ τῶν ὁρίων τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὑμῶν υἱῶν Ησαυ οἳ κατοικοῦσιν ἐν Σηιρ καὶ φοβηθήσονται ὑμᾶς καὶ εὐλαβηθήσονται ὑμᾶς σφόδρα

5Do not engage them in war, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as one footstep, because I gave Mount Seir to the sons of Esau as an inheritance.

μὴ συνάψητε πρὸς αὐτοὺς πόλεμον οὐ γὰρ μὴ δῶ ὑμῖν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν οὐδὲ βῆμα ποδός ὅτι ἐν κλήρῳ δέδωκα τοῖς υἱοῖς Ησαυ τὸ ὄρος τὸ Σηιρ

6You shall buy food from them with money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water by the measure from them with money, that you may drink.

βρώματα ἀργυρίου ἀγοράσατε παρ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ φάγεσθε καὶ ὕδωρ μέτρῳ λήμψεσθε παρ᾿ αὐτῶν ἀργυρίου καὶ πίεσθε

7For the Lord your God blessed you in all the work of your hands. Consider how you crossed that great and fearful desert. Behold, these forty years the Lord your God was with you, and you lacked nothing.' '

ὁ γὰρ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν εὐλόγησέν σε ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ τῶν χειρῶν σου διάγνωθι πῶς διῆλθες τὴν ἔρημον τὴν μεγάλην καὶ τὴν φοβερὰν ἐκείνην ἰδοὺ τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη κύριος ὁ θεός σου μετὰ σοῦ οὐκ ἐπεδεήθης ῥήματος

8'Then we passed beyond our brethren the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir, along the road of the Arabah from Elath and Ezion Geber; and we turned and passed along the desert road toward Moab.

καὶ παρήλθομεν τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἡμῶν υἱοὺς Ησαυ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν Σηιρ παρὰ τὴν ὁδὸν τὴν Αραβα ἀπὸ Αιλων καὶ ἀπὸ Γασιωνγαβερ καὶ ἐπιστρέψαντες παρήλθομεν ὁδὸν ἔρημον Μωαβ

9Then the Lord said to me, 'Do not be at enmity with Moab, or wage war with them, for I will not give you any of their land as an inheritance, because I gave Ar to the sons of Lot to inherit.' '

καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με μὴ ἐχθραίνετε τοῖς Μωαβίταις καὶ μὴ συνάψητε πρὸς αὐτοὺς πόλεμον οὐ γὰρ μὴ δῶ ὑμῖν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν ἐν κλήρῳ τοῖς γὰρ υἱοῖς Λωτ δέδωκα τὴν Σηιρ κληρονομεῖν

10(The Emim dwelt there in times past, a people as great and numerous and strong as the Anakim.

οἱ Ομμιν πρότεροι ἐνεκάθηντο ἐπ᾿ αὐτῆς ἔθνος μέγα καὶ πολὺ καὶ ἰσχύοντες ὥσπερ οἱ Ενακιμ

11They were also regarded as Raphain, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim.

Ραφαϊν λογισθήσονται καὶ οὗτοι ὥσπερ οἱ Ενακιμ καὶ οἱ Μωαβῖται ἐπονομάζουσιν αὐτοὺς Ομμιν

12The Horite formerly dwelt in Seir, but the sons of Esau rooted them out and destroyed them from before their face, and dwelt in their place, in the manner Israel did in the land of their inheritance, which the Lord gave them.)

καὶ ἐν Σηιρ ἐνεκάθητο ὁ Χορραῖος πρότερον καὶ υἱοὶ Ησαυ ἀπώλεσαν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐξέτριψαν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν καὶ κατῳκίσθησαν ἀντ᾿ αὐτῶν ὃν τρόπον ἐποίησεν Ισραηλ τὴν γῆν τῆς κληρονομίας αὐτοῦ ἣν δέδωκεν κύριος αὐτοῖς

13' 'Now rise, break camp and cross over the Valley of Zered.' So we crossed over the Valley of Zered.

νῦν οὖν ἀνάστητε καὶ ἀπάρατε ὑμεῖς καὶ παραπορεύεσθε τὴν φάραγγα Ζαρετ καὶ παρήλθομεν τὴν φάραγγα Ζαρετ

14So the days we took to come from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war died out of the camp, as the Lord swore to them.

καὶ αἱ ἡμέραι ἃς παρεπορεύθημεν ἀπὸ Καδης Βαρνη ἕως οὗ παρήλθομεν τὴν φάραγγα Ζαρετ τριάκοντα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη ἕως οὗ διέπεσεν πᾶσα γενεὰ ἀνδρῶν πολεμιστῶν ἀποθνῄσκοντες ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς καθότι ὤμοσεν αὐτοῖς ὁ θεός

15For the hand of the Lord was on them, to destroy them out of the camp until they were consumed.

καὶ ἡ χεὶρ τοῦ θεοῦ ἦν ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῖς ἐξαναλῶσαι αὐτοὺς ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς ἕως οὗ διέπεσαν

16'So it was, when all the men of war died from the midst of the people,

καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐπεὶ διέπεσαν πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ πολεμισταὶ ἀποθνῄσκοντες ἐκ μέσου τοῦ λαοῦ

17then the Lord spoke to me, saying,

καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρός με λέγων

18'Today you shall pass by the borders of Moab at Seir,

σὺ παραπορεύσῃ σήμερον τὰ ὅρια Μωαβ τὴν Σηιρ

19and you shall draw near the sons of Ammon, but do not be at enmity with them or wage war with them, for I will not give you any land of the sons of Ammon as an inheritance, because I gave it to the sons of Lot as an inheritance.' '

καὶ προσάξετε ἐγγὺς υἱῶν Αμμαν μὴ ἐχθραίνετε αὐτοῖς καὶ μὴ συνάψητε αὐτοῖς εἰς πόλεμον οὐ γὰρ μὴ δῶ ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς υἱῶν Αμμαν σοὶ ἐν κλήρῳ ὅτι τοῖς υἱοῖς Λωτ δέδωκα αὐτὴν ἐν κλήρῳ

20(Formerly, it was also regarded as the land of the Raphain, for the Raphain dwelt upon it. But the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,

γῆ Ραφαϊν λογισθήσεται καὶ γὰρ ἐπ᾿ αὐτῆς κατῴκουν οἱ Ραφαϊν τὸ πρότερον καὶ οἱ Αμμανῖται ὀνομάζουσιν αὐτοὺς Ζομζομμιν

21a people great and numerous and stronger than you, just as the Anakim. But the Lord destroyed them before their face; and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place to this day;

ἔθνος μέγα καὶ πολὺ καὶ δυνατώτερον ὑμῶν ὥσπερ οἱ Ενακιμ καὶ ἀπώλεσεν αὐτοὺς κύριος πρὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν καὶ κατεκληρονόμησαν καὶ κατῳκίσθησαν ἀντ᾿ αὐτῶν ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης

22just as they did for the sons of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, when they destroyed the Horites from before their face. They dispossessed them and dwelt in their place to this day.

ὥσπερ ἐποίησαν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ησαυ τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν ἐν Σηιρ ὃν τρόπον ἐξέτριψαν τὸν Χορραῖον ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν καὶ κατεκληρονόμησαν καὶ κατῳκίσθησαν ἀντ᾿ αὐτῶν ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης

23Also the Avim, who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza—the Cappadocians, who came from Cappadocia, destroyed them and dwelt in their place.)

καὶ οἱ Ευαῖοι οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν ασηρωθ ἕως Γάζης καὶ οἱ Καππάδοκες οἱ ἐξελθόντες ἐκ Καππαδοκίας ἐξέτριψαν αὐτοὺς καὶ κατῳκίσθησαν ἀντ᾿ αὐτῶν

24' 'Now therefore, rise, break camp, and travel along the Arnon Valley. Behold, I give into your hands Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Enter your inheritance and engage him in war.

νῦν οὖν ἀνάστητε καὶ ἀπάρατε καὶ παρέλθατε ὑμεῖς τὴν φάραγγα Αρνων ἰδοὺ παραδέδωκα εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου τὸν Σηων βασιλέα Εσεβων τὸν Αμορραῖον καὶ τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ ἐνάρχου κληρονομεῖν σύναπτε πρὸς αὐτὸν πόλεμον

25On this day, begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the face of all nations under heaven, who when they hear the report of you, they will tremble and be in anguish because of your presence.'

ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ ἐνάρχου δοῦναι τὸν τρόμον σου καὶ τὸν φόβον σου ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν τῶν ὑποκάτω τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οἵτινες ἀκούσαντες τὸ ὄνομά σου ταραχθήσονται καὶ ὠδῖνας ἕξουσιν ἀπὸ προσώπου σου

26'So I sent ambassadors from the Kedemoth Desert to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

καὶ ἀπέστειλα πρέσβεις ἐκ τῆς ἐρήμου Κεδαμωθ πρὸς Σηων βασιλέα Εσεβων λόγοις εἰρηνικοῖς λέγων

27'Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the road, and I will turn neither to the right nor to the left.

παρελεύσομαι διὰ τῆς γῆς σου ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ παρελεύσομαι οὐχὶ ἐκκλινῶ δεξιὰ οὐδὲ ἀριστερά

28You shall sell me food for money so I may eat, and sell me water for money so I may drink; only let me pass through on foot,

βρώματα ἀργυρίου ἀποδώσῃ μοι καὶ φάγομαι καὶ ὕδωρ ἀργυρίου ἀποδώσῃ μοι καὶ πίομαι πλὴν ὅτι παρελεύσομαι τοῖς ποσίν

29just as the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites, who dwell in Ar, did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the Lord our God is giving us.'

καθὼς ἐποίησάν μοι οἱ υἱοὶ Ησαυ οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Σηιρ καὶ οἱ Μωαβῖται οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Αροηρ ἕως παρέλθω τὸν Ιορδάνην εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν δίδωσιν ἡμῖν

30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the Lord our God hardened his spirit and made his heart stubborn, that He might deliver him into your hands, as on this day.

καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν Σηων βασιλεὺς Εσεβων παρελθεῖν ἡμᾶς δι᾿ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐσκλήρυνεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ καὶ κατίσχυσεν τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ ἵνα παραδοθῇ εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου ὡς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ

31Then the Lord said to me, 'Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to inherit his land.'

καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με ἰδοὺ ἦργμαι παραδοῦναι πρὸ προσώπου σου τὸν Σηων βασιλέα Εσεβων τὸν Αμορραῖον καὶ τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ ἔναρξαι κληρονομῆσαι τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ

32So Sihon and all his people came out to engage us in war at Jahaz.

καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Σηων βασιλεὺς Εσεβων εἰς συνάντησιν ἡμῖν αὐτὸς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ εἰς πόλεμον Ιασσα

33But the Lord our God delivered him over to us; so we defeated him, his sons, and all his people.

καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτὸν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν πρὸ προσώπου ἡμῶν καὶ ἐπατάξαμεν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ

34We conquered all his cities at that time, and we utterly destroyed every city, one after the other, and we did not leave their women and children alive.

καὶ ἐκρατήσαμεν πασῶν τῶν πόλεων αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ καὶ ἐξωλεθρεύσαμεν πᾶσαν πόλιν ἑξῆς καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν οὐ κατελίπομεν ζωγρείαν

35We took only the cattle as plunder for ourselves, along with the spoil of the cities.

πλὴν τὰ κτήνη ἐπρονομεύσαμεν καὶ τὰ σκῦλα τῶν πόλεων ἐλάβομεν

36From Aroer on the bank of the Arnon River, and from the city in the ravine, as far as the mountain of Gilead, there was not one city that escaped us; the Lord our God delivered them all into our hands.

ἐξ Αροηρ ἥ ἐστιν παρὰ τὸ χεῖλος χειμάρρου Αρνων καὶ τὴν πόλιν τὴν οὖσαν ἐν τῇ φάραγγι καὶ ἕως ὄρους τοῦ Γαλααδ οὐκ ἐγενήθη πόλις ἥτις διέφυγεν ἡμᾶς τὰς πάσας παρέδωκεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν εἰς τὰς χεῖρας ἡμῶν

37Only we did not go into the land of the sons of Ammon—anywhere along the Jabbok River, or to the cities of the mountains, as the Lord our God commanded us.

πλὴν εἰς γῆν υἱῶν Αμμων οὐ προσήλθομεν πάντα τὰ συγκυροῦντα χειμάρρου Ιαβοκ καὶ τὰς πόλεις τὰς ἐν τῇ ὀρεινῇ καθότι ἐνετείλατο ἡμῖν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν
