Amos 5

1O house of Israel, hear this word of the Lord, a lamentation which I take up against you.

ἀκούσατε τὸν λόγον κυρίου τοῦτον ὃν ἐγὼ λαμβάνω ἐφ᾿ ὑμᾶς θρῆνον οἶκος Ισραηλ

2The virgin of Israel has fallen; she will rise no more; she tripped over her land, and there is no one who shall raise her up.

ἔπεσεν οὐκέτι μὴ προσθῇ τοῦ ἀναστῆναι παρθένος τοῦ Ισραηλ ἔσφαλεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς αὐτῆς οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ ἀναστήσων αὐτήν

3For thus says the Lord God: 'From the city where a thousand went out, in this group there will yet remain a hundred. And in that from which a hundred went out, ten will be left to the house of Israel.'

διότι τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ἡ πόλις ἐξ ἧς ἐξεπορεύοντο χίλιοι ὑπολειφθήσονται ἑκατόν καὶ ἐξ ἧς ἐξεπορεύοντο ἑκατόν ὑπολειφθήσονται δέκα τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ

4For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: 'Seek Me, and you will live.

διότι τάδε λέγει κύριος πρὸς τὸν οἶκον Ισραηλ ἐκζητήσατέ με καὶ ζήσεσθε

5But do not seek Bethel, nor go into Gilgal, nor cross over to the Well of Oath, for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nothing.

καὶ μὴ ἐκζητεῖτε Βαιθηλ καὶ εἰς Γαλγαλα μὴ εἰσπορεύεσθε καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ φρέαρ τοῦ ὅρκου μὴ διαβαίνετε ὅτι Γαλγαλα αἰχμαλωτευομένη αἰχμαλωτευθήσεται καὶ Βαιθηλ ἔσται ὡς οὐχ ὑπάρχουσα

6Seek the Lord and live, lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph and devour it, with no one to extinguish the fire for the house of Israel.

ἐκζητήσατε τὸν κύριον καὶ ζήσατε ὅπως μὴ ἀναλάμψῃ ὡς πῦρ ὁ οἶκος Ιωσηφ καὶ καταφάγεται αὐτόν καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ σβέσων τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ

7The Lord is He who brings about justice on high and righteousness on the earth!

κύριος ὁ ποιῶν εἰς ὕψος κρίμα καὶ δικαιοσύνην εἰς γῆν ἔθηκεν

8'He makes all things. He transforms the darkness into the morning and makes the day dark as night; He calls forth the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth. The Lord God Almighty is His name.

ποιῶν πάντα καὶ μετασκευάζων καὶ ἐκτρέπων εἰς τὸ πρωὶ σκιὰν θανάτου καὶ ἡμέραν εἰς νύκτα συσκοτάζων ὁ προσκαλούμενος τὸ ὕδωρ τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ἐκχέων αὐτὸ ἐπὶ προσώπου τῆς γῆς κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ ὄνομα αὐτῷ

9He rains ruin upon the strong and brings misery upon the fortress.

ὁ διαιρῶν συντριμμὸν ἐπ᾿ ἰσχὺν καὶ ταλαιπωρίαν ἐπὶ ὀχύρωμα ἐπάγων

10'They hated him who reproved in the gates and abhorred the upright word.

ἐμίσησαν ἐν πύλαις ἐλέγχοντα καὶ λόγον ὅσιον ἐβδελύξαντο

11They tread upon the poor and take bribes from him. They built houses of hewn stone, yet they shall not dwell in them. They planted pleasant vineyards, but they shall not drink wine from them.

διὰ τοῦτο ἀνθ᾿ ὧν κατεκονδυλίζετε πτωχοὺς καὶ δῶρα ἐκλεκτὰ ἐδέξασθε παρ᾿ αὐτῶν οἴκους ξυστοὺς ᾠκοδομήσατε καὶ οὐ μὴ κατοικήσητε ἐν αὐτοῖς ἀμπελῶνας ἐπιθυμητοὺς ἐφυτεύσατε καὶ οὐ μὴ πίητε τὸν οἶνον ἐξ αὐτῶν

12For I know your many transgressions and the enormity of your sins, devouring the righteous and taking bribes, turning away the poor at the gate.

ὅτι ἔγνων πολλὰς ἀσεβείας ὑμῶν καὶ ἰσχυραὶ αἱ ἁμαρτίαι ὑμῶν καταπατοῦντες δίκαιον λαμβάνοντες ἀλλάγματα καὶ πένητας ἐν πύλαις ἐκκλίνοντες

13Because of this, the prudent keep silent in this time, for it is an evil time.

διὰ τοῦτο ὁ συνίων ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ σιωπήσεται ὅτι καιρὸς πονηρός ἐστιν

14Seek good and not evil so that you may live, so that the Lord God Almighty will be with you. As you have said,

ἐκζητήσατε τὸ καλὸν καὶ μὴ τὸ πονηρόν ὅπως ζήσητε καὶ ἔσται οὕτως μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ ὃν τρόπον εἴπατε

15'We hated evil and loved good.' And restore justice in the gate that the Lord God Almighty may have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.'

μεμισήκαμεν τὰ πονηρὰ καὶ ἠγαπήκαμεν τὰ καλά καὶ ἀποκαταστήσατε ἐν πύλαις κρίμα ὅπως ἐλεήσῃ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ τοὺς περιλοίπους τοῦ Ιωσηφ

16Therefore the Lord God Almighty says, 'There shall be wailing in all the streets, and it shall be said in all the highways, 'Woe! Woe!' The farmer shall be called to mourning and lamentation, as will those skilled in wailing and complaining.

διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ ἐν πάσαις πλατείαις κοπετός καὶ ἐν πάσαις ὁδοῖς ῥηθήσεται οὐαὶ οὐαί κληθήσεται γεωργὸς εἰς πένθος καὶ κοπετὸν καὶ εἰς εἰδότας θρῆνον

17There shall be lamentation in all your streets because I shall pass through the midst of you,' says the Lord.

καὶ ἐν πάσαις ὁδοῖς κοπετός διότι διελεύσομαι διὰ μέσου σου εἶπεν κύριος

18Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! What is the day of the Lord to you? It will be darkness and not light.

οὐαὶ οἱ ἐπιθυμοῦντες τὴν ἡμέραν κυρίου ἵνα τί αὕτη ὑμῖν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου καὶ αὐτή ἐστιν σκότος καὶ οὐ φῶς

19It will be as though a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him! As though he rushed into the house, leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him!

ὃν τρόπον ὅταν φύγῃ ἄνθρωπος ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ λέοντος καὶ ἐμπέσῃ αὐτῷ ἡ ἄρκος καὶ εἰσπηδήσῃ εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπερείσηται τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν τοῖχον καὶ δάκῃ αὐτὸν ὁ ὄφις

20Is not the day of the Lord darkness and not light? Is it not a deep darkness, with no brightness in it?

οὐχὶ σκότος ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου καὶ οὐ φῶς καὶ γνόφος οὐκ ἔχων φέγγος αὐτῇ

21'I hate, I reject your feast days. I do not savor your sacred assemblies.

μεμίσηκα ἀπῶσμαι ἑορτὰς ὑμῶν καὶ οὐ μὴ ὀσφρανθῶ ἐν ταῖς πανηγύρεσιν ὑμῶν

22Though you offer Me burnt offerings and meat offerings, I will not accept them. I will not regard your fattened peace offerings.

διότι καὶ ἐὰν ἐνέγκητέ μοι ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ θυσίας ὑμῶν οὐ προσδέξομαι αὐτά καὶ σωτηρίου ἐπιφανείας ὑμῶν οὐκ ἐπιβλέψομαι

23Take away from Me the sound of your songs, for I will not hear your musical instruments.

μετάστησον ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ ἦχον ᾠδῶν σου καὶ ψαλμὸν ὀργάνων σου οὐκ ἀκούσομαι

24Instead, let justice run swiftly as does water from the mountain, and let righteousness be as a stream that cannot be crossed.

καὶ κυλισθήσεται ὡς ὕδωρ κρίμα καὶ δικαιοσύνη ὡς χειμάρρους ἄβατος

25'O house of Israel, did you offer Me sacrifices and offerings those forty years in the wilderness?

μὴ σφάγια καὶ θυσίας προσηνέγκατέ μοι ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη οἶκος Ισραηλ

26You have carried the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god Raiphan, which you made for yourselves.

καὶ ἀνελάβετε τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ Μολοχ καὶ τὸ ἄστρον τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν Ραιφαν τοὺς τύπους αὐτῶν οὓς ἐποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς

27Therefore I shall exile you beyond Damascus,' says the Lord—the Almighty God is His name.

καὶ μετοικιῶ ὑμᾶς ἐπέκεινα Δαμασκοῦ λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ ὄνομα αὐτῷ
