Proverbs 5

1My son, hold fast to wisdom And incline your ear to my words,

υἱέ ἐμῇ σοφίᾳ πρόσεχε ἐμοῖς δὲ λόγοις παράβαλλε σὸν οὖς

2That you may guard good thinking; And I command you with the perception of my lips.

ἵνα φυλάξῃς ἔννοιαν ἀγαθήν αἴσθησιν δὲ ἐμῶν χειλέων ἐντέλλομαί σοι

3Do not join yourself to a base woman, For honey drips from the lips of a prostitute, Or for a season she is pleasing to your taste;

μὴ πρόσεχε φαύλῃ γυναικί μέλι γὰρ ἀποστάζει ἀπὸ χειλέων γυναικὸς πόρνης ἣ πρὸς καιρὸν λιπαίνει σὸν φάρυγγα

4Afterward, however, you will find her more bitter than gall And sharper than a two-edged sword.

ὕστερον μέντοι πικρότερον χολῆς εὑρήσεις καὶ ἠκονημένον μᾶλλον μαχαίρας διστόμου

5For feet lacking discernment lead those using her down into Hades with death; Her footsteps are not planted,

τῆς γὰρ ἀφροσύνης οἱ πόδες κατάγουσιν τοὺς χρωμένους αὐτῇ μετὰ θανάτου εἰς τὸν ᾅδην τὰ δὲ ἴχνη αὐτῆς οὐκ ἐρείδεται

6For she does not travel the ways of life; And her paths are slippery and not easy to discern.

ὁδοὺς γὰρ ζωῆς οὐκ ἐπέρχεται σφαλεραὶ δὲ αἱ τροχιαὶ αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ εὔγνωστοι

7Now therefore, my son, hear me, And do not make my words invalid;

νῦν οὖν υἱέ ἄκουέ μου καὶ μὴ ἀκύρους ποιήσῃς ἐμοὺς λόγους

8Make your way distant from her And do not come near the doors of her house,

μακρὰν ποίησον ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς σὴν ὁδόν μὴ ἐγγίσῃς πρὸς θύραις οἴκων αὐτῆς

9That you may not give away your life to others And your existence to the merciless;

ἵνα μὴ πρόῃ ἄλλοις ζωήν σου καὶ σὸν βίον ἀνελεήμοσιν

10That strangers may not be filled with your strength, And your labors go into the houses of strangers,

ἵνα μὴ πλησθῶσιν ἀλλότριοι σῆς ἰσχύος οἱ δὲ σοὶ πόνοι εἰς οἴκους ἀλλοτρίων εἰσέλθωσιν

11And you should feel regret at the last, When the flesh of your body is consumed;

καὶ μεταμεληθήσῃ ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων ἡνίκα ἂν κατατριβῶσιν σάρκες σώματός σου

12And you will say, "How I hated instruction And turned my heart away from reproofs;

καὶ ἐρεῖς πῶς ἐμίσησα παιδείαν καὶ ἐλέγχους ἐξέκλινεν ἡ καρδία μου

13I did not hear the voice of my instructor and teacher, Nor did I incline my ear;

οὐκ ἤκουον φωνὴν παιδεύοντός με καὶ διδάσκοντός με οὐδὲ παρέβαλλον τὸ οὖς μου

14Little by little I was in every evil In the midst of the church and congregation."

παρ᾿ ὀλίγον ἐγενόμην ἐν παντὶ κακῷ ἐν μέσῳ ἐκκλησίας καὶ συναγωγῆς

15Drink waters from your vessels And from the fountains of your spring.

πῖνε ὕδατα ἀπὸ σῶν ἀγγείων καὶ ἀπὸ σῶν φρεάτων πηγῆς

16Do not let the waters from your fountain be spilled by you, But let your waters pass through your wide places;

μὴ ὑπερεκχείσθω σοι τὰ ὕδατα ἐκ τῆς σῆς πηγῆς εἰς δὲ σὰς πλατείας διαπορευέσθω τὰ σὰ ὕδατα

17Let them be only for you, And let no stranger partake with you;

ἔστω σοι μόνῳ ὑπάρχοντα καὶ μηδεὶς ἀλλότριος μετασχέτω σοι

18Let the fountain of your water be for you alone, And rejoice together with the wife of your youth.

ἡ πηγή σου τοῦ ὕδατος ἔστω σοι ἰδία καὶ συνευφραίνου μετὰ γυναικὸς τῆς ἐκ νεότητός σου

19Let your loving deer and graceful colt keep company with you, And let her alone go before you and be with you at all times; For in living with her love, you will be great.

ἔλαφος φιλίας καὶ πῶλος σῶν χαρίτων ὁμιλείτω σοι ἡ δὲ ἰδία ἡγείσθω σου καὶ συνέστω σοι ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ ἐν γὰρ τῇ ταύτης φιλίᾳ συμπεριφερόμενος πολλοστὸς ἔσῃ

20Do not be intimate with a strange woman, Neither cling to the embrace of a woman not your own;

μὴ πολὺς ἴσθι πρὸς ἀλλοτρίαν μηδὲ συνέχου ἀγκάλαις τῆς μὴ ἰδίας

21For the ways of man are before the eyes of God, And He keeps close watch on all his paths.

ἐνώπιον γάρ εἰσιν τῶν τοῦ θεοῦ ὀφθαλμῶν ὁδοὶ ἀνδρός εἰς δὲ πάσας τὰς τροχιὰς αὐτοῦ σκοπεύει

22Lawless women ensnare a man, But each man is bound by the chains of his own sins.

παρανομίαι ἄνδρα ἀγρεύουσιν σειραῖς δὲ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτιῶν ἕκαστος σφίγγεται

23Such a man dies with the uninstructed And is cast forth from the abundance of his own substance; And he is destroyed by lack of discernment.

οὗτος τελευτᾷ μετὰ ἀπαιδεύτων ἐκ δὲ πλήθους τῆς ἑαυτοῦ βιότητος ἐξερρίφη καὶ ἀπώλετο δι᾿ ἀφροσύνην
